Oct 28, 2014 - Westwood?

This was such a totally amazing little town. Founded by the world's 8th richest man in the late 1800's, this company town existed to support and house the workers of the first electric sawmill. To keep his workers happy and to keep the unions out, he ran steam pipes from the mill to all the houses to heat them. He built the world's first indoor mall and kept the prices low for the workers to use their script. He built a hospital and all had free medical care (!) More recently, some investors in the '90's decided to build a world class ski...

Aug 31, 2010 - Butt Reservoir-Kayak

Today we actually kayaked at a faster speed than we were able to drive to the Butt Lake Ramp just 7 miles away. It took us nearly two hours to find Butt Lake and the boat ramp! Needless to say we got lost and actually drove around in a circle. It helped me understand the research that Bill puts in on all the destinations to find the correct boat ramp sites, hiking trail trail heads, and biking trail departure points. It is much more complicated than meets the eye!Well, perseverance paid off-we had a fabulous kayak. Butt Reservoir is fed by...

Aug 29, 2010 - Bike Lake Almanor

It poured rain in the morning so we slept in. About noon we decided to bike the south end of Lake Almanor on the newly paved bikeway. It was a superhighway for bikes and almost deserted. The path followed the shoreline and then wound through stately pines deep in the surrounding forest. Pines hundreds of years old were everywhere. It was a long ride-18.2 miles and 808 vertical feet. We were spent by the time we were finished. The sun had finally broken through. We had dinner at Luciano's near our RV park.

Aug 26, 2010 - Kayak Lake Almanor

We awoke to a beautiful morning on the shores of Lake Almanor. The Temperature was about 50 and warming quickly as the sun rose. Our electric problem was resolved and the day seemed very encouraging. We launched the kayaks right out of our front yard and began our nine mile journey along the western shore. Lake Almanor is a large artificial lake in northeastern California. The maximum depth is about 90 feet and is formed by the sCanyon Dam on the north fork of the Feather River. It was damned in 1926 and is now owned by Pacific Gas and...

Aug 25, 2010 - Mt. Shasta to Lake Almanor,CA

We left Mt. Shasta RV Park about 9:30 towards our destination of Lake Almanor. We drove the 138 miles to Lake Almanor through complete wilderness-surrounded by only pine trees and winding narrow roads-we wondered if the road would just end in a forest. We had several stops for road construction and negotiated some wicked short detours. Finally we arrived at the Big Cove RV Park right on the shore of Lake Almanor. I held my breathe as I drove down the narrow drive and had to negotiate a tough turn and then back 200 feet into our RV space. We...

Sep 28, 2008 - A gorgeous travel day

Beautiful driving day. Around 7:30 this morning I was having coffee & watching the "early birds" pull out of the hotel parking lot. Around 9 a.m. I decided to look at the national weather service to see whether I should wear shorts. Forecast was for 97 F in Redding ... oh crap, I better go... The car happily climbs mountains but I wasn't sure if it would be happy in that kind of heat ... I remember overheating my old Mustang (a straight 6) on the Coquihalla. Not a problem as it turned out .. the temp gauge didn't budge. My only problem was...
