Mar 29, 2017 - If the Van is a'Rockin......
March 28, 2017 If the van is a'rockin........ go ahead and knock, it's just an earthquake. Here's what I copied from this morning from http://earthquaketrack.com/us-ca-borrego-springs/recent Borrego Springs has had (magnitude 1.5 or greater) 2 earthquakes in the past 24 hours 20 earthquakes in the past 7 days 85 earthquakes in the past 30 days 1,143 earthquakes in the past 365 days You would think with all this activity that I would have felt more than one of them, wouldn't you? And that one was no big deal, I just happened to notice the...Jump to full entry
Mar 23, 2017 - Don't Busy Me, I'm Bothered!
March 25, 2017 Don't Busy Me, I'm Bothered It's been nice to re-connect with so many nice people that I met here last year and to meet some new ones, like Jo and Art. Most everyone here is very friendly and I am too. Now that I am living in the close quarters of an RV Park, I often hear things like, “What are you doing for dinner?” “Do you want to come over for a glass of wine?” “Let's go sit in the shade and read.” “You're hiking alone? I'd like to go!” I really didn't worry too much about these frequent requests (which coincidentally were...Jump to full entry
Mar 20, 2017 - People
One of the best things about traveling is meeting new people so today I will introduce you to some interesting people I have met on this trip. “Radar”, whose real name is Debbie, is an attractive, funny, friendly tennis player I met my first night here. She was camped behind the tennis center in a cool Dodge van that she renovated herself to suit her new full-time lifestyle; she just hit the road in January. She has solar panels, cabinets, and a very comfy-looking bed and she plans to add a small refrigerator and small sink. We were all...Jump to full entry
Mar 15, 2017 - Hot Desert Days, Cool Desert Nights
Talk about Chamber of Commerce weather, this is it. Hot sunny days with a slight breeze, cool clear nights with a bright moon shining, and a wildflower "superbloom"; it just doesn't get any better than this. The only problem is the "locals" have to get out early on a week day to enjoy it because little Borrego Springs is overwhelmed with tourists. I've heard the NY Times had a reporter here last Sunday and it's been on the national news. Here's the local newspaper's perspective: http://www.borregosun.com/ Yesterday the tennis club group was...Jump to full entry
Mar 12, 2017 - More Wildflowers
Early Saturday morning I walked to town via the quiet, open desert behind me. It is hard to resist taking pictures. Besides the beauty of the wildflowers I love looking at Indian Head, the mountain to the northwest. Once someone points out his profile and headdress, it is easy to see why the name stuck. Yesterday this quiet town was a major tourist destination. Cars, jeeps and RVs were streaming in from all directions and people were parking along the roads to walk in any open space they could in search of flowers. I could see a traffic...Jump to full entry
Mar 11, 2017 - Wildflowers and Tennis
Susan Ammons and I headed out early to hike in Henderson Canyon last Sunday hoping to avoid the influx of tourists here to see the "superbloom", which was just getting started. It was a cool morning and really beautiful and by the time we got back to our parking spot several other cars had arrived. We left on Monday to spend four nights in Indio so we could attend the free and/or cheap opening days at the BNP Paribas/Indian Wells tennis tournament and by the time we drove back to Borrego Springs on Thursday even more flowers had bloomed....Jump to full entry
Mar 3, 2017 - You Know You're in CA When.......
1. The supermarket clerk asks, "Would you like to buy a bag or will you hand carry that out?" Grocery stores (and maybe others) do not supply bags and plastic is outlawed which is a very good thing, except for losers who forget their bags. 2. You try to pay for your cheap gas with a credit card only to realize they only take debit cards and then charge you $.35 for the privilege of saving them money. 3. The window display for the store "Rough Trade Gear" in Palm Springs advertises "Premium F#$&king Gear Since 1999", only it's spelled out. I...Jump to full entry
Mar 6, 2016 - Fun Day in Indian Wells
March 6, 2016 Charity Tennis Event at Indian Wells Tennis Garden Mike, a friend of Susan's, offered her two tickets to the McEnroe Challenge for Charity Event last night. Jim had no interest in going so she asked me and I was excited to go! Eight of us left the tennis center in two vehicles at 12:30 and stopped for lunch on the way. Even with an unexpected detour to Home Goods to look at birdbaths, we got to the parking lot at 3:30. We had plenty of time to wander around the grounds and there was one pre-qualifying match being played for...Jump to full entry
Mar 5, 2016 - Last Few Days in Borrego Springs
March 5, 2016 Last Few Days in Borrego Springs One morning I woke up early and I decided to walk the labyrinth. It's close to a mile across the desert to get to there but it was a cool enough morning that I didn't worry about snakes and just enjoyed looking at the short-growing but beautiful wildflowers. Okay, I have never walked a labyrinth before but always have been drawn to them. The path on this one is very narrow so I knew I'd have to make myself walk slowly, which is not my normal speed. Maybe that's the point? Took a deep breath and...Jump to full entry
Mar 2, 2016 - Chores and Changes
March 2, 2016 Chores and Changes Yesterday was my day to get things done in anticipation of leaving on Thursday. I borrowed PT and drove to the fruit stand for oranges, managed to fill up my water jug and get it home without spilling, got a roll of quarters at the bank and did all my laundry. Most of the afternoon was spent trying to stay cool as it got up to 94, yikes! At 4:00 Susan and Jim picked me up to go out for the evening. We stopped to see Francis and Jim's beautiful home; they sit on about 3 acres of desert-landscaped serenity;...Jump to full entry
Feb 29, 2016 - Happy Leap Day!
February 29, 2016 Happy Leap Day! It's also the four-week anniversary of my Borrego Springs arrival. My time here has flown by and I know why the Ammons and so many others have fallen in love with this place. People from all over the world come here for birding; butterflies; paleontology workshops; sky-watching; 4-wheeling and dirt biking; hiking; and of course for wildflowers. Many people I've met started visiting here for a month......then two months the following year.....then four and then six months. Some people live here year round...Jump to full entry
Feb 24, 2016 - Borrego Springs CA
Another fine day in the desert of southern California. We do not have much planned for today but having lunch at the Rams Hill Golf Club. In this little town there are 3 Championship golf clubs, out in the middle of nowhere. All three have very expensive homes overlooking the course and very nice club houses with restaurants. It was very beautiful to sit at the club house having lunch and look out over the golf course. Very nice. That was about it for the day, everyone is getting ready to pull out tomorrow.Jump to full entry
