Apr 1, 2016 - Bye Bye Birdie

John woke me up around 7:30 and said he was going for his walk, and I promptly rolled over and went back to sleep. Why is it those extra thirty minutes of sleep are the best of the entire night! He sounded gruff when he came back and found me still asleep in bed, but he soon got over it. After all, we only had a short way to travel today. -- We traversed the banks of the Delta today to the tiny community of Bethel Island, which is near Antioch. There was a steady stream of traffic going both ways on the narrow two-laned road, but the...

Apr 7, 2013 - Tripping Down Memory Lane

After two weeks of visiting with the Hanford branch of my family, we headed north once again. We started today's trip on Highway 99 which has basically been in crappy condition for years. However, we were pleasantly surprised to see that many parts of it have been repaved and that construction is continuing. Hopefully by our next trip to California, Highway 99 will be new and improved all the way from Bakersfield to Sacramento. -- As we traveled up the San Joaquin Valley through all of the towns with familiar names, I was tripping down...

Apr 23, 2012 - A Short Move; More Visiting

Today was a short travel day, only about 100 miles, but it was a tough one for our Pilot, John. We left around 9:00 am to avoid rush hour traffic through Sacramento, but we had heavy traffic the whole trip. We wondered if this is just the norm now. Then, the highways were very rough and in many places, narrow due to construction. It looks like they are trying to widen and fix the roads in many places, but right now, they are in pretty bad shape. And then to top it off, it was very windy and we had a cross-wind most of the way. John worked...

Dec 14, 2009 - Our Last Day in No. California

We enjoyed some filtered sunshine today with warmer temperatures in the 60's. I am sure that the locals here would call today a "sunny" day, but having lived in Tahoe and having spent the last year on the east coast under clear skies, today was not what I would call sunny. Rain is predicted in Northern California tomorrow but it is supposed to be clear the farther south you go, so we will try traveling south tomorrow. We want to get through the San Joaquin Valley and to the central coast before this coming weekend to avoid both the Valley...

Dec 13, 2009 - Ugh!

Ugh! We are stuffed. We spent the day reading the Sunday paper, watching football, and eating with Sue and Manuel. We had huge deli sandwiches for lunch with chips and dip, egg nog with brandy and fruit cake for an afternoon snack, and then lasagna, rolls and salad for dinner. Too much food! We have been over-eating for the past week! -- It rained for most of the day. I helped Manuel set up his new Garmin GPS that he got for his birthday. I will be impressed if he ever actually uses it. I told him if he could figure out how to set all the...

Dec 11, 2009 - Doing What We Do Best

I wasn't going to do a journal entry for today since we just basically had another kick back day - what we do best. But there were a few items of possible interest. -- For one, it was warmer last night due to the overcast and occasional rain. It was the first time we have had a morning above freezing for the past three or four nights. The "warmth" was appreciated. -- This morning, we headed to the nearest grocery store for supplies. As I started to put on my shoes, Rocky got into my lap and began purring loudly, as if to say, please don't...

Dec 8, 2009 - Staying Warm

We continue to kick back and try to keep warm in the unusually cold weather in California. The hills all around the Bay Area yesterday morning were covered with snow and several outlying communities reported the first measureable snow in many years. We can see Mt. Diablo from Bethel Island and it looks like a peak in Alaska. This evening, the sunset shining gold on it was spectacular, but I did not have my camera. -- Today was girls day out. Sue, Irma and I went shopping and then took in a movie - "2012"- which was excellent. It is almost...

Dec 6, 2009 - A Little Bit of Christmas

Today was a laid back day, spent visiting with Sue and Manuel in their beautiful, cozy home. John happily got to watch football games during the daylight hours on a big screen tv. We ate too much all day as we laughed and talked and read the Sunday paper. -- This evening, we went over to the Bethel Island Community Center where Sue and Manuel were volunteers, helping to serve hot cocoa and a vast variety of cookies to the locals. Santa was there with the high school chorus singing Christmas songs. The community tree was lit up and we ended...

Dec 5, 2009 - Oh California, How You've Changed

Today was a roughy, toughy day for our Wagon Master, as we traveled around 260 miles up the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is good to be back in my home state and back on the west coast and out of the humidity. But, my oh my, have things changed in just two years. We traveled up Highway 5 which was always one of the most boring highways in the world. Only now, both sides of the road are planted with pistachio trees - for miles - as far as you can see. I remember they were just trying to plant pistachio trees years ago to see if they...

Aug 20, 2007 - Bethel Island, CA

We traveled from Nevada City, CA to Bethel Island, CA, a distance of about 150 miles, and were greeted by some very warm weather (95 degrees). The area is a beautiful water recreation area right on the California Delta. There are a lot of nice boats here and we regret not having one of our boats with us. Oh well, next time. We took an opportunity to recharge our batteries a little bit as we had a fairly physical weekend up in Nevada City. Bob also had a chance to catch up on his restaurant business book work. We did a little relaxing...
