Sep 30, 2013 - Day One Berkeley

First stop, Berkeley and a quick visit to meet Nick's new kitty, before heading to the Apple store to wait for 2 hours to have my slow charging iPad checked out. :- hopefully, it won't be too much longer and I'll be able to have dinner with them before heading to Marian's. While I am waiting, I decided to make the most of it and test out this journal.

Jun 21, 2011 - Berkeley

Day one of my summer in Berkeley was an absolute nightmare. I was exhausted from a flight that seemed to have taken days and was going on 2 hours sleep. Fortunately, I had a great read with me.."Surely you're joking Mr. Feynman" I read the whole book in one day. Pretty amazing for me, I could not stop reading it. Upon arrival to Berkeley, I found out the pleasures of walking uphill with luggage, I think I must have lost 10 pounds that day alone and must have built up some good muscles. It was then dinner time, I wasn't sure if I wanted to...

Jun 12, 2011 - Getting ready...

Ok, here's the new travel blog. I'm hoping to use this to document the 7 week Europe trip I'm about to go on. I leave tomorrow and, so far, here's the rough outline of the trip: With parents: (4 weeks) • Greece • Italy • France With Kate: (3 weeks) • Spain • Morocco • Portugal (possibly?) I've got my backpacker's backpack that's about the size of my entire torso. I've got travel-sized everything. I've got my passport, money saved up, and a whole lot of excitement! ... and nerves. Everything with my parents is planned out, but when Kate gets...

Ultimate Euro Trip!

Mar 21, 2011 - Old professors

3/21 Day 15 Brought a big box of stuff over to Janet’s (she is storing it in her garage)…I packed way too much stuff (books I won’t have time to read, some clothes, little trinkets, etc.) Janet gave me some well-wishing presents & poems She and I drove to USF and walked around campus trying to bump into our old professors…we chatted with Dr. John Nelson, Dr. Jorge Aquino, Sasha Koftinow…it was great! I saw a few from my science departments…and I got rid of all my textbooks (just gave them away for free…nice books too…some were quite...

Mar 20, 2011 - East Bay buddies

3/20 Day 14 Drove to the East Bay to meet up with old friends...thanks to GPS Had brunch with Sasha (old friend from junior high...it has been a long time!) in Berkeley (and her wife and their housemates and friends…nice crowd) Drove around in Berkeley for a bit, found a beautiful windy road that took me to a turn-out with a view of the whole Bay & Berkeley & SF (I just sat there and stared out my window for about an hour or so)…found a cool coffee shop & hung out while waiting for a friend Reena met me there on College (I think?) and we...

Jan 20, 2010 - Enough already!

Well, they sure know how to show a girl a good time in California! First an earthquake, now tornado warnings and flood watches and storm surges. What a time we're having. We are still in Berkeley. Weather advisories warn against travelling -- slides are possible, washouts, flash floods ... geez. Dei and Peter continue to encourage us to stay parked in their driveway. "The eighth night is FREE!!!" Peter gleefully announced last night at dinner. So we're grateful for a safe place to perch. Dei couldn't get in to work yesterday morning because...

Jan 18, 2010 - Sunshine? What's that?

Yes, we are still here in beautiful downtown Berkeley. Big storm happening--forecast is for the next three days, from here to San Diego. And we had an email from our marina in Vancouver this morning saying it is uber-windy and we should check our foresail, so I guess it's not just here. (Thanks, Bob, for taking care of things for us while we're gone.) We were planning to spend the night down the coast aways tonight, but got a call from the park ranger this morning at Seacliff State Park (cleverly we'd made a reservation) to say they are...

Jan 16, 2010 - Berkeley/Napa Valley

So, apparently if you get chippy about the weather, the gods really do get chippy back. All that talk of sunshine has led to a weather forecast of rain for the next 5 days. And not just rain, but RAIN. Moral: when you're lunching in the sunshine in Sausalito, keep it to yourself. However, so far so good. And yesterday we had a lovely day when Peter took us to the Napa Valley for a little wine tasting tour. It was overcast, but still nice and what a treat to see the legendary Napa Valley. It's pruning season, so we saw lots of workers out in...

Jan 14, 2010 - Berkeley, California

Left Bodega Bay yesterday, the 13th, and the SUN WAS SHINING! Yay. I KNEW they had sunshine in California. Everybody said so. The day before, the 12th, it rained, it POURED, so we didn't do too much. Managed a walk up a hill, admiring the wild (!!!) pampas grass that grows everywhere here and is regarded as an annoying weed by lots of people, but seems to exotic to us, bringing to mind all kinds of trite things about perception, beauty being in the eye of the beholder, one man's this is another man's that, and so on. But ain't it the truth?...

Jun 22, 2009 - The day before I leave...

...and I still have to pack. I don't think it's hit me yet that I'm going to be living out of a backpack for the next 5 months all while zipping through 8 countries. Yes, thats 8 countries if I've counted right - 1) India, 2) Indonesia, 3) Thailand, 4) Laos, 5) Vietnam, 6) Cambodia, 7) Australia, and 8) New Zealand. Looking forward to a lot things. Top things to see/do right now are - Taj Mahal, the entire island of Bali, Bangkok, riding elephants in Chang Mai, riding the slow boat down the Mekong River, Angkor Wat, Ha Lang Bay, Ayer's...

Oct 17, 2008 - First day of Confrence

Today is the first day of the 34th Annual N.O.R.M.L. confrence. It is the first one that I have attended and I am hoping that it will not be my last. I am also hoping that next year I will not be going by myself. I would love for Jim to come with, and Kaylen has already told me that she wants to go next year. Unless Jim and I drive out I doubt he will attend with me, saddly. Kay on the other hand, all we need to do is get her a passport so that we can drive up to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
