Sep 17, 2016 - Trinidad to Benbow, CA

September 17, 2016 Got almost 10 hours sleep last night in the dark forest! We learned that the North Humboldt County Fair (the 43rd consecutive!)was in Arcata. Couldn’t imagine where they would be able to put 170 vendors plus music venues and farmer’s market. Surprisingly we had no problem parking and found that both the market and fair were not overcrowded at 9:30 in the morning. Wonderful produce but we really did not need anything other than some snacking cherry heirloom tomatoes. People watching in Arcata is always fun. Close your eyes...

Aug 12, 2016 - On the road

First thing this morning Avery told us the bed was uncomfortable and, you know, she was right. So off Avery and I went to Target to buy a memory foam pad. Then we picked up a few more groceries. In the meantime, Lucas and Grandpa were getting the RV hooked up and ready to go. We planned to stop half way, Lucerne, at the Fresh and Bangin' Eatery. What a great choice. Who would think such a small town could have such gourmet food. We vowed to return on Monday on our way back. Lucas was looking forward to pulled pork. The redwoods start...

Apr 5, 2015 - Over to the coast and the Redwoods at Benbow

Having been unable to fit the trailer into two different state parks in the Redwoods, I settled for a KOA for the night. I was actually surprised again by the number of campgrounds that were either closed altogether or only had small sections open. Which was the case at Richardson Grove State Park. One small loop was open and I just couldn't get the trailer in any of the spots. “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished”. --Lao Tzu

Nov 3, 2014 - Arcata to Benbow, CA

November 3, 2014 Partly overcast day but we will take it! Our first stop was the Humboldt National Wildlife Refuge (established in 1971) near Loleta which is one of the key stopovers for migratory water birds. (The ranger said it was probably a great egret and great blue heron we saw yesterday in the fields.) We walked the Shorebird Loop through the freshwater wetlands, pond and eelgrass meadows. Saw primarily black brants (Alaskan goose that winters in Baja), and egrets. Much of the original salt water marshes were dredged over the years...

Jun 25, 2012 - Benbow

We traveled up Highway 101 today to Benbow, it was a beautiful windy drive, the redwoods are spectacular. It is much cooler up here, had to put on jeans and a jacket, even a few sprinkles one the way; first rain we have seen since leaving home. Garth and Shirley had to stop and clean up a bottle of wine that fell during the trip, it is always a challenge to have everything secured, especially over the terrible California roads, you can certainly tell the state is out of money. This is only an overnight stop, going to Klamath for a few days...

Apr 25, 2011 - Last day in the redwoods

Tom: Our last day in Benbow California. We decided to stay close to home base and get caught up on our journal entries, laundry and some essential shopping. Did manage to get 9 holes in this afternoon. Karen walked the course w/ me. A little dinner and a early evening after dinner walk topped off the day. Karen: Tom said it all except that was the straingest golf course I have ever been on. We must have crossed 3 road and climbed two big hills....very interesting! Later....

Apr 22, 2011 - Heading for the redwoods

Tom: Leaving the Santa Rosa and heading to Benbow California and the Avenue of the Giants. By far one of the easiest drives we have had to date and arrived at Benbow early afternoon. We met Mitch (My cousin) and his wife Susan around 6:30 pm and had dinner at the Benbow Inn at 7 pm. Laid out the day for tomorrow. Karen: Great to see Susan and Mitch, new car, great meal, good company. What else can you ask for after a "awful drive through Oakland traffic, as Tom forgot to mention. Sort of steessful and crazy, and I wasn't driving~!! Changing...

May 2, 2010 - Instead of just driving by....

Our drive from Clear Lake to our next stop in Benbow, CA was one we have made many times over the past 20 years. Our son Bret has lived about 60 miles north of there giving us good reason to make the trip, but also giving us good reason to want to get to where we were going rather than stopping to enjoy the local spots and beautiful scenery along the way. This time we did stop, although it was difficult not to rush northward as we had not seen Bret, Jolene and our grandkids Terra & Zane in almost a year. We stayed at an RV Resort connected...

Mar 26, 2010 - Avenue of the Giants

We had moved inland to a small place called Benbow which really only consisted of a few houses, one hotel and an RV park. Our purpose was to drive the Avenue of the Giants scenic byway. The 31 miles of road, which was the original Highway 101, makes its way through magnificent groves of giant coastal redwood trees. The coast redwoods grow in a narrow strip along the Pacific Coast of California and south western Oregon. They tower over all other trees in the world, with trees over 360 feet having been recorded. They also develop the world\s...

Aug 9, 2009 - Benbow Valley Golf and RV Resort

Our destination, Benbow Valley Golf and RV Resort, is an RV park right on a nine hole golf course. Of course, we took advantage of the course immediately. It's in interesting course built on several levels. The first two holes are flat. Then you climb up to the third which goes up to the fourth. Then across and up and finally the eighth starts on top and the green is off the cliff. It was fun. In the evening we shared the course with wild turkey and deer.

Jul 3, 2009 - Benbow Valley

The US public holidays are a bit of a nuisance for us. The campsites are full, they insist you stay for a minimum of 2 or 3 nights and push the prices up. So we are here in the Benbow Valley RV resort over the 4th July holiday. 6 nights stay seems like an age but it give us chance to catch up with some stuff. Jo decided to pimp our rides – a quick repaint of the bikes. This resort includes a golf course and the 4 star Benbow Inn which boasted a great restaurant which we tried. It was the best meal we have had in the US and, of course, the...

Jul 1, 2009 - Avenue of the Giants

This world-famous scenic drive is a 31-mile portion of old Highway 101 which meanders through 51,222 acres of redwood groves with some of the giants more than 2000 years old. This is the only place in the world where these trees can be found and – they are so American, the biggest in the world! Along the route there are various trees that have been carved out so you can walk or even drive through their base! Its like being in a scene from ‘Honey I’ve shrunk the kids’.
