Oct 17, 2016 - Back to Barstow and completing a circle And Final Comments

This morning got up early to get a good start, going to drive through 4 states today, a 6 hour drive. We left Hurricane and drove over to St George, UT and got on the I-15 freeway heading south. After about 20 minutes we entered Arizona and drove through the Virgin River Gorge, which is a beautiful drive. After the gorge you drive another 20 miles and then you are in Nevada. We got through Las Vegas with some slowing but not a lot, but between Las Vegas and Barstow there were a lot of vehicles but it flowed well. We arrived at the Barstow...

To Maine and back

Aug 14, 2016 - Barstow, CA

After a quick trip to the dog park for Rocky, we were off to our next stop, Barstow, CA. Barstow is on I-15 on the way to Las Vegas. Barstow is one of those stops we just have to go through in order to get somewhere else. While we were still on Hwy 99 heading toward Barstow there is a lot of industry as well as many orchards of nut trees and citrus. We passed Kraft as well as the place where they process Halo tangerines. Then we turned east and the scenery changed. Lots of rolling hills at first covered in very burned out grass. It’s easy...

May 18, 2016 - And we are off

Up early this morning, last few things to the RV, hook up the car and we are off. Very foggy this morning, the area saying farewell to me with the usual 65 and cloudy. By the time we got to Paso Robles it was clear and getting warm. Had a wonderful drive with this being one of our longest legs of the trip. We arrived at the Marine Corp Logistics Center in Barstow, CA and got settled into our parking spot. Charlotte wanted to do her work, so I jumped into the car and ran into Barstow to check it out. Very depressed, the nicest restaurant in...

To Maine and back

May 8, 2016 - Heading for another adventure!

We're packed up and ready to head out in the morning after two weeks in Barstow. Next stop - Las Vegas. I've never been there and Kirk hasn't been in years. We've had lots of tips on what to do and when to do it, so we feel prepared to do Vegas right! It's been an enjoyable and for the most part relaxing time here in Barstow, and even though we feel completely wind-blown and dusty, we've had a great time!

Apr 26, 2016 - Dust in the Wind

Wow, the wind! It's been so windy that you can chew the air! Being outside is like being in a sandblast tent. It's wreaking havoc with my sinuses. Other than that we've been settling in to a wonderful visit. Neither of us has been able to work on organizing the trailer as planned because of the wind. Hopefully that will happen today. Mom (Pat) is settling in for a day with no solid food in preparation for a colonoscopy tomorrow so we're not planning anything for today. It's nice to feel good for a change, maybe I'll be more productive...

Mar 20, 2016 - Back in Cali

We enjoyed our laid back weekend in Lake Havasu. We felt rested and ready to move on today. -- On Friday, we drove into Parker to a brand new WalMart to replenish groceries. We stopped along the way for breakfast buffet at a casino. I love breakfast buffet. -- Then on Saturday morning, we went to the presentation at the resort in order to receive our free camping weekend. This resort is owned by Coast to Coast, which has recently been purchased by the Good Sam Club. There are several Coast to Coast parks where, if you are a member, you...

Here we are at Shady Lane RV Camp in Barstow where the temperature is a scorching 104 degrees. It's an older park, and the owners are very friendly and accommodating. We'll be heading out early in the morning for St. George, Utah where we will be meeting up with our RV Caravan Group.

May 15, 2015 - Pahrump, NV to Barstow, CA

Finally got back on the road today with a shining, newly detailed coach, new exhaust system, and all new hoses. It turns out it was leaking not only engine oil, but also coolant and hydraulic fluid. Dan saw that the tailpipe was rusted out when he crawled under the coach. It turned out that the muffler was also rusted through, as were the exhaust pipe and the brackets holding everything in place, which they said could damage the turbo. Since all of the problems we've had are related to rusted-out fittings on hoses, he told them to replace...

Apr 28, 2015 - Rainbow Basin

This area is another National Natural Landmark and is located in the Mojave Desert just 8 miles north of Barstow, California. Owl Canyon borders Rainbow Basin and offers a very nice but rustic campgound. The area was formed over millions of years by the shifting and upheaval of the earth's crust. Red, brown, white, and green rock make up the canyon walls in the basin. Rock in the area also holds varying amounts of minerals and fossils. An eight mile loop road offers great views of the basin and the rock formations. The road is restricted to...

Mar 13, 2015 - Not the Best Day

Today was a rough one for the kitties. We left Parker at the crack o' dawn, wanting to get on the highway before the heavy truck traffic. We headed west across the Colorado River into California and turned north on Highway 95. This is a two-lane road without any shoulder and lots of dips. John was trying to keep up with the truck traffic going our way, but they were traveling too fast. Once the truck behind us passed us, he slowed down a bit to a more comfortable speed for him. -- Unfortunately, all of the dipping had an effect on the...

Pretty Damn Nice!

Nov 15, 2014 - Barstow, CA - Naval Museum of Armament & Technology

(Ron Writing) We awoke to beautiful weather again this morning. After breakfast we packed-up, hitched-up, and, a bit reluctantly, we left this wonderful campsite we’ve enjoyed for a few days. But it was time to get the wheels turning and move on. (OK, everybody, hum a few bars of “On the Road Again”) We headed south on US-395, which runs right down the Owens Valley. For many miles we had awesome views of the Sierras to the west of the highway. Today that view was especially beautiful because there was a very unusual cloud formation covering...
