Oct 17, 2018 - Bakersfield Wednesday

This was one of those days from hell that are the reason we have completely lazy days when we’re parked. We exited the Lodi campground early this morning and fueled up at the nearby Flying J truck stop. We got back on the local road and got into the right lane to enter I-5 southbound. Except the highway department decided to close that entrance ramp for road work. We saw a small sign showing the detour was I-5 northbound, but no one in that lane would let us in to take it. There weren’t any other options, so we decided to do a U-turn on the...

At the Rest Stop just north of Pixley, CA, Muffy stepped on a Bee. After contacting our Vet. we continued on to Pixley where we purchased a bottle of Liquid Benadryl and gave Muffy the prescribed dosage. We then continued to Bakersfield and a Banfield Pet Hospital. After receiving assurances that Muffy would be OK we continued on to the RV Park. Our intentions here was 1 night but decided to make it 2 nights. Muffy went to emergency second day (Blood in Urine). She will be staying the night. We will be heading home in the morning after we...

Jul 28, 2018 - California, Part 1

It has been a little more than two weeks since we left home and we finally made it to California. But it was a chore. Right across the state line from Nevada there was a truck fire and recover crews were removing the charred remains. The three-lane highway, which narrowed to two lanes a mile before the state line, was down to one lane. The five-mile backup took us almost an hour to get through. Welcome to California. Out of Las Vegas, I-15 crosses the Mojave Desert. While the land is barren, there is a beauty to the desert. All is not...

Southwest trek

May 2, 2018 - Bakersfield

We left Desert Hot Springs early Monday morning in hopes of avoiding the strong winds that plagued the area for days, and caused us to stay 2 more days at Sam's than we planned. We headed west on I-10 and still got battered by wind as we headed through a pass - it was about 20 miles of hanging on and hoping that Mo would remain upright and that the bikes and kayaks would stay mounted to the front and roof of BAT. Our destination was Bakersfield California. To get there, we had to skirt Los Angeles on I-210 and cross over some pretty serious...

2018 Life in our RV

Mar 26, 2018 - On the road home

Well we got underway at about 0845 this morning, after getting the property all locked up. Twice as much to remember with a motorhome and a piece of property. Anyway we made it to Orange grove RV park in Bakersfield, after 5:00 pm today. A long day for Spikey at the wheel. And it was windy all day but especially so in the San Bernardino area where the wind was blowing 22 mph with gusts to 28. Miss Zoey had it easy, she slept almost the whole way! Anyway thankful to be at our first stop of our 4 day trip home. Tomorrow we will be...

Mar 11, 2018 - Bakersfield CA

Since we lost a lot of time with that flu we needed something more to round this trip out. So we booked into Morro Bay on highway 1 just up from San Luis Obispo. I came upon a tourism brochure on the Hearst Castle and thought why not,we have a few days to burn before going home. We really had to hustle to get there from where we were staying but we luckily scooped 4 nights. With 4 days we should have lots of time to look around that area including the Elephant Sea Lions!!! No spring time change for us today, still running Arizona time on...

Jan 25, 2018 - Bakersfield, CA - Orange Grove RV Park

Because our last trip down I-5 ended up with a broken wheel thanks to the rough highway, we chose to go down Hwy 99. We took the exit at Los Banos and drove out through all the farming fields and fruit/nut orchards. Beautiful drive and not a bad road once out of Los Banos. Lots of construction on 99 especially in the Fresno area, but not too rough a ride. We pulled into our favorite California RV Park. New rules on picking oranges, but we got our usual bag full. The next day we took a drive out to Lake Isabella to see the water level as the...

Winter 2018

Jan 24, 2018 - Up and Over the Tehachapi

Some would say yesterday's drive from Needles to Bakersfield wasn't as scenic as the day before. It many ways it was, of course, but it was a different beauty. A high desert beauty. And one will find the high deserts even more beautiful when out there on foot or horseback. But driving I-40 and then CA-58, it's our planet's wonderful shapes and surprises that fill our senses along the roads. I've never driven west on I-40 so much of this trip seemed new to me. Often you get an entirely different perspective when going the other way. The...

Jan 20, 2018 - Camping in the Orange Grove. Bakersfield CA

Another long drive today but we made another 7 or 8 hours down the road all the way to Bakersfield. The campground is one we stayed in before that is in the middle of an orange grove. Oranges right outside our doorway! From here we will turn left and head to Quartzsite AZ. The rain is gone, the skies are blue and it was 55 degrees. Mike’s happy meter is starting to go up! He likes the warm and sunshine! We also saw a Krispy Kreme and the hot light was on. So we HAD to stop and get some hot donuts!

No Oranges this year...we are to early. BOO Todays drive was rather bumpy, this section of hwy 99 from Patterson to Bakersfield in need of repair. In the future we will take hwy 99 to Sacramento then finish the drive to Bakersfield on the I-5. Mileage wise it almost the same, but more stuff to see on the 99. We seen a huge building just across the fence from our site last night, turns out it was an Amazon warehouse. It was H U G E !!! Decided to stay one extra day after settling in cause we are pretty tired, but the office already had our...

Sep 24, 2017 - Bakersfield

Leaving Stockton to the south of the Elks Lodge, we got to see what a lovely old city it is, on the Sacramento River Delta. The south end of town is the Delta Port of Stockton, and many turn of the century late 1800’s buildings. Think Gold Rush and shipping through San Francisco. We passed a CAT dealer, which always puts a smile on Larry’s face (because he retired from a CAT dealer). As we continued down Highway 99, we saw that we were definitely in the breadbasket of California with cattle, dairy, fruit orchards, grain and hay, table grape...

Apr 9, 2017 - Bakersfield, CA

We had quite a long drive today, about 300 miles. Most of the drive was through the Mojave Desert area, we saw a lot of sagebrush and desert plants. We stopped for gas at Whiskey Pete's, our last stop in Nevada before crossing the California line. We also had to stop for an agriculture check, we tossed out the last two tomatoes we had that were from Mexico, we passed through without an inspection. You have to be very careful with these agricultural checkpoints, if you forget a fruit or vegetable, you can be fined a huge price. This happened...
