Sep 6, 2016 - Arcata

We had a very long day with much twisty driving through redwoods after a stretch along the sea line to start with. The weather has been very kind to us and it continued today. The first highlight was crossing the golden gate bridge leaving San Francisco. Then there was a visit to the Cakebread vineyard where we saw a beautiful garden, the grapes coming in, and the area where the wine was made with all the barrels. We were shown round by Paul Cakebread and sampled some wines. We visited a second vineyard suggested by Harry when we bought a...

Sep 1, 2016 - Arcata CA

Well, that did not go as planned. The estimated 4 hour trip actually took closer to 6 hours thanks to the swervy, curvy mountain roads, a couple small towns and more than a few stops for construction, including one where we shut the house off and sat for over 30 minutes. Oh, and the road was a bit challenging. Only 2 lanes with very little shoulder, rocks on the right side and a lot of trucks going the other way, it was one of those drives where I had to really pay attention to what I was doing. The scenery – what I saw of it – was really...

Aug 30, 2016 - Time to Head south

Back in Arcata after our week in Lake George, we had a visit to the new farmhouse Bret & Jolene closed on the beginning of the month. It is much closer to town than their old property, and while it needs some work, it is a beautiful place. The people who lived there previously had been there for 30 years, and although the house is over 100 years old has had substantial improvements. Most of the work is cosmetic and I think they will enjoy it for many years to come. The next night was a farewell dinner for Terra as she heads off to Lewis...

Aug 16, 2016 - Lake George and New Family Member

We arrived back in Arcata to get ready to fly back east for our annual family gathering at Lake George. We flew into Newark and went to my sister’s in New Jersey for a few days to house sit and dog sit while she enjoyed some extra days up north. She and Dave bought my nephew’s beautiful boat and were anxious to spend all the time possible on it. We had bought tickets for the Saturday round of the PGA Championship in Springfield, NJ and that was really fun until the weather turned bad and the round was cancelled. By the time we got back to...

I’m sorry about the confusion on the last post. I had explained in a previous post that I was just updating the map with our stops on our trip west, and then neglected to send out the email which tells you there is a post available. So the map is updated, and we are now in Arcata, CA to stay for a while. The main draw to be here this time is our granddaughter Terra’s high school graduation. The ceremony was held in the stadium at Humboldt State which is just across the freeway from the high school and where Bret and family live. The day...

Apr 25, 2016 - in the redwood forest

It feels like we have been driving past fields of grape vines this whole winter, but today we finally left them behind. They'll reappear when we get to Washington. We are left wondering just how much wine our nation can drink annually. We left Rt. 1 and the coast because we had read that the drive was not suitable for someone 65 feet long. Highway 101 started out as an expressway and ended up as an expressway, but in between Ken had some exciting driving. Far northern California is known for its redwood forests and all of a sudden the road...

Nov 2, 2014 - Arcata, CA

November 2, 2014 With the change from Daylight Savings Time we awoke much earlier with the light (and sunshine). There are several nice areas we can hike so we will stay another night in Arcata. Decided to hike the Hammond Coastal Trail. The trailhead was about a mile from camp after driving through very large dairy and cattle farms. I wasn’t able to get a picture but we passed a fence where wild turkeys were sitting on the posts with their wings spread. I suppose they were drying their wings????? The trail started by crossing the Mad River...

Nov 1, 2014 - Crescent City to Arcata, CA

November 1, 2014 Woke up to a glorious sunny, blue sky morning although crisp (42 degrees). It was a wonderful day for driving down the Redwood Coast on Hwy 101. The area is called the Redwood National and State Park which is unusual to have a park with both a State and National designation. (The area is also designated as a World Heritage Site) In 1918 the Save the Redwoods League lead to the development of the Del Norte Coast, Prairie and Jedediah Smith Redwood Parks after decades of unrestricted clear cutting logging. By the time ( 1968)...

Jun 5, 2014 - And Back Again

I left my Dad early Friday morning for my flight to Birmingham for my niece Jenni’s wedding to the love of her life Jermaine. Buzz arrived from California around 10, I arrived at noon, my other niece Kelly and her daughter Lindsay and her mother (my sister in law) Brenda arrived at 3 and Jim arrived at 9 (due to airline delays). Saturday morning we all hung out together and then went up to the roof top pool to meet up with the Dome contingent (my brother in law Dave’s family) and then prepared ourselves for the wedding which was at 4. (I...

May 20, 2014 - Coast to Coast

It has been almost a month since my last journal, and in one way I can say we have been quite busy but we have also had a lot of down time so I don’t have any really good excuse for the delay. We have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves here with Bret & Jolene and the kids, and Suzie and Scout are now best friends. I don’t really know if Scout likes Suzie all that much, but she sure loves to see us show up at the door because it usually means we are taking her to the beach or the woods or the dog park for a run. Wherever we go, if there is water,...

Apr 23, 2014 - Fun with Family

We have been here in Arcata for 10 days, and are comfortably settled. The RV Park here had told us there were no more monthly rates available and we would have to do the weekly rates which are quite a bit higher, but when we arrived he remembered us from before and gave us the winter monthly rate through until our departure which will be around June 2nd. Thank you, kind sir. We celebrated Jolene’s birthday at a beautiful restaurant north of here in Trinidad, have taken Suzie and Scout to the beach, been to the farmer’s market in downtown...

Feb 19, 2014 - Arcata

Inspired by our neighbours from Galiano in Bakersfield, who, like us, were rushing home because they wanted to see their grandchild, we decided to step up the journey a bit, and yesterday morning we left Lodi and, instead of stopping at Clear Lake as we had planned, hustled along all the way to Arcata. Not a long day for some, but a long day for us. Rain was forecast, but only sprinkles, and so we decided to go for it. The drive was nice -- we like the 101 -- especially once you get north of Santa Rosa and all the San-Francisco-related...
