Jul 10, 2016 - Bernie - A Life Well Lived

Bernie - A Life Well Lived As we were preparing to head West from Indy, it became apparent that Therese’s brother Bernie was losing his fight with cancer. We hooked up as soon as we got the news and headed for Anaheim in the most direct route. In 6 days of travel and one rest day in the middle, we traveled 2100 miles through 8 states. We arrived in Anaheim in time to spend the last 5 days with Bernie before he passed, a wonderful gift to us that we were able to spend time with this special human being. In the days that followed,...

Jan 4, 2016 - The Mouse and Tricky Dick

Now it's a ride down to Anaheim. We can't come all this way without at least seeing Disneyland. We'll go to Downtown Disney and look around rather than pay $99 for a one day ticket. Everything here is on a much smaller scale than Florida. We wandered the whole area in about an hour, watched the trams and monorail, and walked down to the main entrance. Unlike Florida, there is a fee to park at Downtown Disney out here. We made it out within the two hour free period. After that, we headed over to Yorba Linda and the Richard Nixon Memorial...

Nov 18, 2015 - Last full day at Disney

As today was our last full day at Disneyland / California Adventure it was a day of going on some rides for a second, and even third, time as well as going on some rides for the first time. We also managed to finally track down Alice and the Mad Hatter for a photo that we'd been chasing them for since last week. We made a few last minute gift purchases including some ears with our names on. Tomorrow is our last day in America before we come home. We can't believe it's gone so fast. It only seems like yesterday that we were riding across the...

Nov 17, 2015 - Back in Anaheim

This morning we got up and went across the road from our hotel to the beach. We played in the sand and in the water but the Pacific Ocean is cold on this side of the world. After that we had a swim in the pool before getting ready to leave San Diego and head back to Anaheim. On the way we stopped off at a donut shop that's been going for 65 years. We couldn't understand what flavours the lady was telling us so we just tried what looked good. They were all very yummy of course, who ever heard of a donut tasting horrible? After arriving back...

Nov 14, 2015 - We survived Disneyland

Yesterday we arrived at Disneyland at 9am and we got off our last ride at 20 minutes past midnight! When we first arrived the queues were pretty short so we were able to go on Pirates of the Carribean, the Haunted Mansion and the Big Thunder Railroad rides within the first hour. After that we went to Toontown and met Goofy and Mickey in their houses and have photos with them. We then went on It's a Small World. In the afternoon we watched the Christmas parade before going back to our hotel to have a rest for an hour. When we got back to...

Nov 10, 2015 - Disney California Adventure

Today we went to Disney California Adventure which is right across from the entrance to Disneyland. We meet Anna, Elsa and Olaf from Frozen, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie from Toy Story, Mike and Sully from Monsters Inc, and Doug from Up! Nessie and Mum went on a Roller Coaster called California Screamin and the whole family went on a giant Ferris Wheel. On the Ferris Wheel you could choose a cabin that just rocked or a cabin than rolled around on a rail as well as rocked. We chose the one on the rail which we discovered was pretty silly when...

Nov 9, 2015 - Disneyland is awesome!

Some people describe Disneyland with these 5 words: "The happiest place on Earth". Our 5 words are: "Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome". We started the day on Star Tours which is a Star Wars ride. We then had photos with Merida from Brave, Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, Tigger, Winnie the Pooh, Fawn and Tinker Bell. We went in a submarine that had Finding Nemo characters under water and then went on Splash Mountain twice and got so wet we had to come back to our hotel to change clothes. We watched a show called Mickey and the...

Nov 8, 2015 - Goodbye Vegas hello Disneyland

Today we drove from Las Vegas to Anaheim which is where Disneyland is. Dad hired a car that the man at Avis described as a "boat on wheels". It had 8 seats and 3 DVD players! We watched DVDs from most of the trip with Nesse sitting in the middle row of seats and Gabi sitting in the back row. We want one of these cars for home but Dad says it would be too hard to park at Eastland. Tonight we went to Downtown Disney which is in between Disneyland and California Adventure and had a look at the massive World of Disney store. As we were getting...

Oct 22, 2015 - Luxury in Anaheim

We have hit jackpot with our accommodation. We have own our TV, lounge area, bathroom and a balcony with magnificent views. The owner is super friendly and the whole house is filled with people. From what we can gather, there are at least 2 people who rent here are full time and about 3 rooms for airbnb. The owner lives directly below us. Everyone has met us and had a chat. The owner was super keen for us to meet Evandro, the full time guy who is here for jujitsu stuff. He made us this weird Brazilian smoothie this morning. Apparently it's...

Oct 15, 2015 - Back to Four

Anaheim, CA Our numbers have been dwindling each day. At our peak we numbered 14. After taking niece Keelan to the train station, we ended at just 4: Sandi, Jim, sister Barb and Mom. Naturally we put in another full day of activity. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is 183’ tall, making it the tallest building in Anaheim. This exciting ride employs specialized technology developed specifically for Disney, particularly the ability to move the “elevator cab” in and out of a vertical motion shaft. The elevator cabs are self-propelled automated...

Oct 14, 2015 - Fun in the sun

Anaheim, CA Today was another abnormally hot scorcher of a day but we were at Disneyland, the happiest place on earth, so we had fun. Normally Disneyland in the middle of October is very comfortable weather with low crowds. We have found quite a different situation. Despite the unprecedented heat, people have been pouring into the parks all week, catching the Disney staff by surprise. We have learned how to thread our way through the masses to get where we want to go. We again had a day of shifting groups but Jim and Sandi spent most of the...
