May 31, 2017 - Taking our time

We've been continuing our stay in this beautiful campground at Goose Lake. We took a nice but rough ride toward Cave Lake. It was only 6 miles away, but we gave up after 3 miles as the road was deteriorating and going straight up. Our car was getting covered in dust and we figured we had seen as much as we were going to be able to. There was a small lake where we turned around and a couple of anglers were fishing in it. It must have been stocked as we could not see any creeks feeding it or draining it. At about mile two there was a very...

May 25, 2017 - Peaceful holiday

We are not in Alturas, we are in New Pine Creek...a "town" of less than 100 people and zero services, 39 miles north of Alturas, and 15 miles south of Lakeview, OR. But the Goose Lake State campground is perfect for a peaceful holiday weekend. On the way up we followed a wild stream...Muddy brown, white rapids, churning onto and over the banks. The snow melt is in high gear, pastures have standing water and flood watches are in effect. Since the creeks filling the lake have been dry for 5 years, they are filled with dirt and the resulting...

our 2013 spring trip

May 6, 2008 - Alturas, California

The trip from Bend to Alturas, California was pretty uneventful. That said, the new heated vest and gloves came in handy as it got a tad cold. I took a stab at getting up to Crater Lake but it was closed. There was a lot of snow as I climbed higher and higher but my ‘little’ bike only holds eighteen litres and I was concerned about running out of gas. So I returned back down to a gas station and – no gas. So I continue to a ‘big’ gas station and – no gas. I finally made it to Klamath Falls and I was on the edge – so what! If I run out of...

Jan 16, 2008 - Finally getting to Jocotepec (almost at this date)

Friday, Jan04 We were packed and ready to go for the 5 ferry, but the guy from Shaw just didn't show up to get the satellite dish woring, so after many calls he turneded up in the rain and we just made it to the 8 ferry. It was a bit stormy and quite a rough ride, but there were only 32 vehicles on the ferry and because it was a 'special' day, we got on for 1/2 price! Quite a saving to start the jouney. Since traffic was so light we tried for the Peace Arch crssing, only to find that it as closed, so we went to the Pacific truck crossing. We...

Oct 21, 2007 - Stopover in Alturas

Normally I don't think we'll be logging each and every stop -- it would drive everyone nuts. BUT, the view from this one is awesome. First -- we made a mistake and didn't take Hwy 62 from I5 to go to Klamath Falls....we missed it but thought - "oh, we'll take hwy 66"....Well, let me tell you -- that hwy should be re-named to "Oh, SHIT highway"!!!! It's curvy, HIGH, and narrow. NEVER again! But Bob can now say we've been on "Route 66".....I'm not so sure we made a "mistake"......hmmmmmmmm We're in Alturas for the night......here's the view...

Sep 5, 2007 - Bend, OR to Alturas, CA

The drive from Bend, OR to Alturas, CA was filled with more sage and brown, dry landscape. It's hard to believe that you're over 3500 feet. We stayed the night in a tiny campground, Sully's, in Alturas. It was nice and shady, and the site was one of two or three large enough for our rig since we didn't want to unhook from the truck. Good overnight spot.
