Jul 8, 2017 - #foundmypark

We got an early start this morning and were on the road once again before 8:00 a.m. I had mixed emotions about today's trip to the Grand Canyon. Essentially we will have driven 10 hours off of original route in order to see it. But I just could not accept being only 5 hours away and skipping it. Note the early arrival was huge...we passed multiple lines of mile long traffic headed into the park as we were leaving. No way those people were going to find parking, probably anywhere. Background: Somewhere around 25 years ago Whaley and I were...

Road Trip 2017

Jun 29, 2017 - Not living narrow!!

So this morning about 10 am we received the phone call that THOR was ready. So we packed the stuff in the car and high-tailed it over to Camping World. We paid, shook hands with Eric, hooked up the car and headed out. The pictures were taken by Bob and reflect the scenery between Kanab, UT and Flagstaff, AZ, but mostly prior to Page, AZ. Even though we only drove 285 miles, it sure seemed further. Probably due to the wind. I drove most of the way because we knew there were a lot of places Bob wouldn't make it. As it turned out, he did have...

Utah and Back

Jun 5, 2017 - Mesa to Flagstaff

Mesa to Flagstaff Day 1: Monday, 5 June 2017 It was definitely time to leave Mesa: the high temperatures have been over 105 degrees for several days. We are changing our summer travel pattern this year. Previously we have traveled all summer—seeing many places along the way. We will do some sightseeing at the start of our summer trip this year (June 5th to July 7th). We will be revisiting the National Parks and other scenic features in Southern Utah. We will also take two side trips: The first is to Rangely, Colorado to see the “Tank”...

Mar 30, 2017 - A Visit to the RV Doctor and Other Places

We were able to get Winnie into Paul Evert's RV shop at 0830 on Wednesday to see if we could diagnose the overheating problem. With Winnie's service history in hand, I met with the Service Manager to explain the problem. It looked like this was going to be a trial and error process. After deciding to replace the thermostat with a lower opening temperature model and to replace the fan clutch first, we had to wait until Thursday for the fan clutch to arrive from Phoenix. We packed up Winnie and went back to the KOA to await the arrival of the...

Mar 27, 2017 - From the Desert to the Mountains

Before leaving Tucson, we had dinner at a place called Hot Rods. It's a combination bar and grille and car/motorcycle restoration shop. You have dinner or drinks at tables that overlook cars in various stages of restoration. The shop's only open 8-5 Monday through Friday. It wasn't very crowded for a Saturday night, but there was a lively group of Oregon Ducks fans there to watch them upset No. 1 seed Kansas to move onto the Final 4 in the NCAA tournament. It's an interesting concept for car and motorcycle enthusiasts, but the food was only...

Mar 7, 2017 - Flag$taff AZ

Leaving the Grand Canyon we ran into a little hiccup with the truck. We needed to visit a Dodge dealership and found one in Flagstaff. They would work on the truck the next day but in the meantime, we dropped the trailer in a vacant lot across the street….and right next to a Home Depot! We made a couple of trips in there to spend some time, and get a few things to fix the drawers in my sewing room that keep sliding open. We took a walk a little further and saw an old Route 66 park with some of the original road in it. A mall stop and a...

Sep 15, 2016 - Day 10

Today was LOTS of driving... We got up on time. Matt had to catch up on some work in the am, but we we were out the door by ten. Before we left, Alicia was burping Raelyn, and P was putting her face in Raelyn's at the same time. Not a good idea, unless you want spit up all over your face! P wiped it off with a grin, and was totally cool. Although, two weeks ago, when she got a tiny bit of spit up on her jammies, there were tears and new jammies involved... After about 8 hours on the road, we just made it in time to see the tail end of the...

Landheer Trip 2016!

Aug 3, 2016 - Long Drives and Rainy Days

Greer’s Pine Shadows, Flagstaff, AZ Wednesday, Aug 3, 2 pm MST On July 21, the seven day forecast in the San Juan Mountains surrounding Lake City called for 60% Thunderstorms on most days. Saturday 7/23 was predicted to be dry, so Jerry and I set off for Silverton via Stony Pass which I had never visited. It follows the truck road south of Slumgullion Pass past Rio Grande Reservoir where Gladys and I tent camped back in the early 1980’s. But we had never ventured past the reservoir where the road becomes 4-wheel-drive (4WD). The rough road...

Jun 19, 2016 - Home For A While. Flagstaff, AZ

We had plenty of time to get started this morning as our drive was less than 100 miles total. Eddie & Jan rode with Marilyn & I to the same restaurant we found for lunch yesterday. Once again the food was good and plentiful, causing us to leave with tummies full. We stopped to fuel the car before returning to the RV’s. We again took our time and finally were ready to go. Eddie & I discussed the routing and then Marilyn & I rolled out of the OK RV Park at a quarter before 10:00. Eddie & Jan caught up with us and pulled into the J & H RV Park...

Jun 11, 2016 - Walnut Canyon National Monument

We are jumping for joy and sighing with relief. The truck was covered by warranty and it did not cost a cent! Yay! And, it was bad DEF, so be sure to check the date when you buy it for your diesel engine. Whew! We got the truck back about 12:30 p.m. and by 1:00 p.m. we were out and about. It was so nice seeing trees again and vegetation that wasn’t cactus. After 9 months….yeah, I know…we are out of the desert and even though we like Arizona, a little greenery is quite pleasant. We headed for the Walnut Canyon National Monument which is only...

Yippee Tyo's!

Jun 10, 2016 - On the road...kind of

Well, there is good news and there is bad news. Let’s start with the good news first. We packed up and got out by 09:15, which is early for us, but it was already 90 degrees and John had to get everything set for traveling before he melted. Jeez, that hot already. We hit the road and were happy as two clams. Are clams happy? It was a lovely day to travel. All was right with the world. But, then the warning light came on in the truck saying that our DEF levels were low and to see a dealer. That was surprising as John had filled it up last...

May 26, 2016 - Photos Meteor Crater

Missed the turn for the North Rim-Grand Canyon at Jacobs Lake. Went on to JandH RV Campground they did not have our site ready so we went to Greer's. Checked in and drove to Walnut Creek Canyon. Then on to Meteor Crater east 40. Few photos, privately run. Interesting but not worth the money.
