Feb 22, 2017 - Secret Destinations

February 21, 2017 Santa Fe, NM “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.” Martin Buher, The Legend of the Baal-Shem On this journey my known destination is southern California, first Palm Springs for three days followed by Borrego Springs for a month. The secret is I don't know how to get there. Sure, I have maps and an iPhone but those just show me that there's more than one way to get there, and that's the problem. If I go the northern route I could finally see Sunset Crater, but I-40 has so many trucks and...

Jan 18, 2017 - Casa Grande

Well we didn't get to far today but it took us all day to get there. After breakfast at the hotel we checked out and headed south. Because we were going to two national parks yesterday Devin bought a yearly pass because it was the same amount as paying separate, we got to use the pass again today when we stopped at the Casa Grande ruins by Coolidge. It was something to see and it had even gotten warm enough for short sleeves ya. We had lunch at Tags in Coolidge, which seems to be a biker bar but none of the bikers were younger then 60. From...

Nov 19, 2016 - Arrival Casa Grande AZ

From Bullhead City, we travelled south on Highway 95 thru Needles, California which can be confusing even when using a GSP because the highway parallels the interstate and the on/off ramps can be confusing. After a bit of a detour we drove thru Parker, Arizona and joined the I10 west of Phoenix. Taking the I10 and then taking secondary routes around Phoenix we reached Val Vista RV Park, on the north side of Casa Grande where we will stay until mid-March. We were impressed when we arrived at Val Vista RV Park, the new owners that took over...

Sep 16, 2016 - Casa Grande AZ - BeDillons

The restaurant originally was the 1917 adobe home of Mattie and Jean Vallette. Then, Lee and Annabell BeDillon bought the property in 1965 and spent two decades refurbishing and restoring. When Michael and Nancy Jackson became owners in 1987, they decided to turn the main building into a restaurant, which opened two years later. Jackson kept and restored as much of it as possible, including the stunning cactus garden (featuring 85 global varieties) and the museum, which houses an amazing collection of Native American artifacts....

Sep 16, 2016 - Casa Grande AZ - Casa Grande Ruins

The national monument consists of the ruins of multiple structures surrounded by a compound wall constructed by the ancient people of the Hohokam period, who farmed the Gila Valley in the early 13th century. "Archeologists have discovered evidence that the ancient Sonoran Desert people who built the Casa Grande also developed wide-scale irrigation farming and extensive trade connections which lasted over a thousand years until about 1450 C.E. "Casa Grande" is Italian and Spanish for "big house"; these names refer to the largest structure on...

Sep 13, 2016 - Casa Grande, AZ

Tue, 14 Sep: Last drive of '16... Horray, horray! Bob has been set free from the clutches of the Mayo Medicos. He had a check up yesterday (Mon) and was declared fit to travel. We elected to wait one more day just to be sure. Well, this morning he said he was ready to head back so back we headed. Sandi did most of the heavy lifting as Bob is still restricted as to how much physical effort he is allowed. Not a big problem as we have both done every task needed around the RV so it isn't new or strange. By nine we had the car connected and...

Aug 27, 2016 - Casa Grande, AZ

Sat, 27 Aug: And back "home" again... After two days in the shop Carpe Diem was "released" mid day yesterday. Rather than head home late in the day we opted to avail ourselves of another nite at the Freightliner of Tolleson's courtesy customer parking. Since it was a Friday/Saturday nite it was relatively quiet so we got a good nite's sleep. The service went very well and no major issues were found. It included a chassis alignment to address a tendency to pull to the right. Turns out it is a problem with a front tire so we're looking at...

Aug 18, 2016 - Casa Grande, AZ

Thu, 18 Aug: Heading to our "Home Base"... Today we head "home", to our leased lot in Casa Grande. While we are truly full-timers, e.g., we have no "stick home", we do have a home base which is a leased lot in Casa Grande. This is in a cooperative RV park and gives us a place to call "home" even if it is little more than a flat piece of land. Bob was still feeling a bit under the weather as a result of the meds he is taking so Sandi did the driving. Once thru our checklists we pulled out of our site at Eagle View and hooked up the car....

Apr 19, 2016 - High School Friends Reunion...

Today's post goes back to last months visit with friends in Casa Grande. Larry's buddy from high school contacted Larry to let him know that two other high school friends were coming for a visit from California. So of course we made a change in our travel plans & timed it for the 'high school reunion'! We usually see Gary every year during the spring & we have seen Phil a couple of times over the years. But Larry hadn't seen Matt since 1960 & was really looking forward to catching up with all of them. The first day we enjoyed a very nice...

Apr 18, 2016 - Casa Grande Ruins...

Today's post covers our recent visit to the Casa Grande ruins with friends Gary, Lynne, Matt & Phil. You might remember that the four guys were doing a 'high school reunion'. Even though we see Gary & Lynne quite regularly, Matt has been out of the picture since the 1960's. Getting together again was a real treat for these guys & spending a couple of hours at Casa Grande Ruins made for a nice afternoon. So, here goes: As soon as we entered the Visitor Center we showed our Golden Age Pass (yep, sometimes it pays to be a 'senior') & we were...

Apr 8, 2016 - Casa Grande, AZ

We left San Diego around 10am last Thursday, April 7th overnighting in Yuma before arriving in Casa Grande for the Tiffin Rally at the Palm Creek Golf and RV Resort. The resort has 2,000 plus spaces for RVs/modular homes and attracts snowbirds every October through early April. The summer temps can rise to 115 degrees (in summer population drops to around 300). We bought our coach at the 2015 Tiffin Rally in Canyonville, Oregon and we had a wonderful time greatly helped by the two veteran rally couples parked on either side of us. We had...
