Apr 25, 2013 - A Mining We Did Go

Journal fixed!! We visited Queen Mine which is a copper mine which closed in 1979. Our guide was a former miner who spent 20+ years "underground" and had lots of stories to tell. It was dark and cool, but well worth the time. Look closely at the pics and see what you can learn. Also included a few cactus pics that were eliminated by the system earlier.

The Gypsy Whaylands

Apr 6, 2013 - Bisbee, Arizona

On Friday, we drove through mostly unpopulated areas in the morning: the Chihuahuan desert spreads as far as the eye can see with lots of sotol and a variety of cactus, mesquite, and creosote bush. There are mountains on the horizon all around, but so far the road steers clear of them. We did get pulled over for going too slowly (53 mph in a 55 mph zone—the road is pretty rough and we prefer to shake things no more than absolutely necessary) because, according to the patrolman who waved us off the road, “They go fast out here.” They were...

Apr 3, 2012 - Bisbee, AZ

Howday, Woke up to 26 this am. The wind is gone and it is about 76 today. We drove down to Bisbee about 40 miles from us and 22 from Tombstone which drove thru and 90 miles southeast of Tucson. This is county seat of Cochise. It got started from the copper, silver mines in the late 1800's and and named after Judge DeWitt Bisbee a financial backer of the Copper Queen mine and mind you he never set foot in Bisbee! They still are mining copper. We took a bus tour to get the scoop. Bisbee community was the largest city between St. Louis and San...

Schrams on the road

Mar 18, 2012 - Grand Slam Week...and I Don't Mean a Meal at Denny's!!

What a fun week in Phoenix! It started out (for me) when Dennis picked me up at Sky Harbor Airport after spending 5 days helping Kelli out-she and Kaia were very ill; Kaia with bronchial asthma/cough/fever and Kelli with, as she later found out, severe sinus infection/fever. Dennis had driven from Prescott and had the RV all set up for me when I got back to Arizona. The week was devoted to baseball, for the most part, and we truly enjoyed visiting new ballparks and going back to familiar ones. We watched the Rockies play the Padres at Salt...

Feb 3, 2012 - Busy as a bee

Bisbee AZ that is. We stayed another night so we could see Bisbee. And what a town it is. Mining was what put Bisbee on the map. Where there were booms and busts in the 1800's, Bisbee's mining industry lasted until the early 1970's. We started the morning with a tour of a copper mine. Well to be exact, I made it 100 feet in and it got too close for me and I along with 2 others bailed out. But Shirley rode the little train into the mine 1500 feet! She said it was fantastic. Then after moving to a different site in the same RV park we headed...
