Jul 31, 2016 - Day 35 Valdez

Day 35. Still raining off and on. Managed to take a hike with only drizzles. Down a dirt road with lots of waterfalls along the way... that we could see. A lot of fog. We turned around at a creek. Didn't want to get feet wet. There was a beautiful waterfall there. Back to town and down to The Fat Mermaid for beer and smoked salmon dip. Pricey, but good. Then back to Halibut House for more greasy fish and chips. I think I've reached my limit for the next 10 years. The town has bunnies all over. Just hopping around. The lady at the campground...

Jul 29, 2016 - Day 33 Valdez

Day 33 Bear Paw RVPark. Park is right across from the boat harbor. Our site is backed up right to the sidewalk. There's also another RV caravan at this campground. We are definitely amongst the smaller of the rigs. It's a little noisy with the street noise, but quieted down after a long while. Out bedroom is on the other side of our trailer so it wasn't so bad, but Karen's bedroom is on the street side so she got a little more noise. We had all kinds of weather on the way.. Sun, rain, fog. Stopped at visitor center and got Jessica a Jr....

Jul 23, 2016 - Day 60 On the road for 2 months

We have been in Valdez, Alaska for the last 4 days. The drive down the Richardson Highway was one of the prettiest we have seen on this trip. We are on day 60 exactly 2 months since we left home. Valdez is where the oil pipeline ends, and is loaded onto tankers. Strange thing about that is we paid the most for Diesel here since we started our trip.( 3.10 a gallon) except for Canada! While we were here we visited Salmon Gulch fish hatchery. It is where they spawn salmon every year. About 230 million pink salmon eggs are taken, to be...

Jul 22, 2016 - Valdez, Alaska

Valdez , Alaska We drove from Anchorage to Valdez last Monday, a distance of a little over 300 miles...318 to be exact. We stopped to see Worthington Glacier on the way, and Joe could not believe how much it receded from the last time he saw it in 2008. We met a woman who had been there a year ago and she was surprised in the one year change. The first day in Valdez we drove looking at what was in town..the museums and historical places. We went back on the Richardson Highway to see Bridal Veil Falls and Horse Tail Falls and also observed...

Jun 29, 2016 - Last day in Valdez

Today is our last day in Valdez, we spent it visiting the museums in town and just resting up for our next move (and of course checking out the local ice cream vendor). We visited 2 museums, both very nice and informative. The entire town of Valdez was destroyed by an earthquake on March 27th, 1964 (good Friday); The town was rebuilt on more solid ground 3 years later, and about 3 miles away from the original site. Then in March of 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran aground and spilled millions of gallons of oil into the Prince William...

Jun 28, 2016 - 9 Hour Glacier & Wildlife cruise Valdez

On Tuesday, we took the 9 hour Glacier & Wildlife cruise out of Valdez; It was everything we anticipated and more! The destination for the cruise was Meares Glacier, but they really took their time getting there, and pointed out all of the wildlife along the way. When they saw something to photograph, the captain stopped the boat and allowed everyone ample time to view and photograph the points of interest. We took over 100 pictures, wish we could post them all, but will try to pick out the best. This tour was VERY WELL WORTH the money, and...

Jun 26, 2016 - Grizzly Lake to Valdez AK

When we left Grizzly Lake in the rain, we headed for Valdez. We were "on the fence" about coming to Valdez because we got so many mixed reviews about how it is "since the oil spill" in 1989; it's come back 100%, it's come back 80%, it hasn't come back much at all, don't go there, etc... We decided to come see for ourselves, and we're glad we did. We booked in 1 night and ended up staying 4 nights! We arrived late afternoon and checked into the Bear Paw RV resort. It's right across the street from the marina, and totally surrounded by...

Jun 26, 2016 - Church boat - Whale update!

Karen was up early this morning. She had heard about a boat that sailed out on Sunday mornings for services. it was pretty convenient since the same boat would be taking her on another whale hunt. It is a smaller boat and we are hoping she gets to see a couple. I'm tired of whale not watching so I stayed home. I got to watch her sail out of port and back in and back out again, whew. I hope to get to see her sail back in one more time. The third picture is what we see when we look out of the windshield every morning. It is about 4 miles...

Jun 25, 2016 - A little fog

I woke up to the fog horns sounding this morning. I was trying to get my eyes focused and then I saw it, sure enough, it was foggy. Ha. We spent most of the day trying to decide what we were going to do next. We finally decided that Karen would go on another whale cruise and I would stay behind. Money wasn't the only deciding factor making our decision, I thought that I had enough of whale "looking". Rested up a little bit this afternoon and then went to the harbor to see if they had caught any big fish. Saw they were cleaning a couple...

Jun 24, 2016 - No whale

I got up early and fried up some bacon for breakfast, Karen had her usual bacon and cheese omlet and I had 3 over medium, all set for the day. We set sail at 10:30 with high hopes in pursuit of the elusive whale. The whale won again. We started out with a drizzling rain and it pretty much rained the whole 7 hours of the tour. It was a beautiful trip even with the overcast and I imagine on a sunny day it would only be better. We saw seals, otters, porpoises and such but no whales. The captain took us up to within 2 miles of the glacier...
