Jun 14, 2016 - Skagway
There was one thing that we said we HAD to do if we came to Alaska and that was to ride a dogsled. Today was our day to do just that. Flying in a helicopter at 6500 feet among Alaska snowy mountains and glaciers was amazing! The pilot dropped us off at a dog camp that sits on Denver Glacier. It was like being in another world up there. Nathan, our dog musher, his wife and their 14 dogs live in Alaska during the summer and in Vermont in the winter. He introduced us to the dog team that pulled our sled and talked about living on a glacier. We...Jump to full entry
Jun 13, 2016 - Day trip to Skagway, AK USA
We took a drive to Skagway, AK. Mom and Dad kept trying to talk to me about the history of the gold rush. Mom got all excited in the town of "Fraser", British Columbia Canada and made us take a picture. I did earn the title of JR Ranger before lunch. We ate lunch with a place in town with a few women dressed funny that the men seemed to like. I tried to order a drink off of the menu called a reindeer fart but all I got was sprite. On the way home we saw a bear sow with 2 cubs and I beat up the most fearsome creature in the Yukon!Jump to full entry
Jun 13, 2016 - Day 64 - A BOOK FOR THE TRAIN!
Margie and I both worked today. As is her normal routine now she does inventory on Mondays. A girl was in the store today and she had one of those scooter things for people who have broken there foot, ankle or some lower extremity. She mentioned that she broke it four weeks ago in the Bahamas. So, four weeks ago she was in the Bahamas and now she is on a cruise in Alaska. Just how much money and free time do these people have? I have learned what an inuksuk is. It resembles a totem pole but the natives stacked rocks to make a directional...Jump to full entry
Jun 10, 2016 - Day 61 - Finally!! or Sixty Three Dollars a Bottle!
My Real Estate Agent sent me a text this morning. He let me know that the house had passed the reinspection by Laclede Gas. He also said he was on his way to drop off the cashier’s check at the title company and would let me know if the paperwork got there. I finally got the first tracking update in two days. The tracking now shows that my package got to Hazelwood, Missouri at 6:51AM this morning, then to Florissant, Missouri at 8:38AM, and delivered at 10:34AM. That is one day late and just barely in time for the closing. I got another...Jump to full entry
Jun 9, 2016 - Skagway, Alaska
Today we were up early for the train ride to Skagway. We met the bus here at Pioneer RV Park for the ride to Fraser, BC to board the train to Skagway. What a ride. Mountains, lakes, gorges, ravines, you name it. It was a beautiful ride. The train ride ended at the port and it had four huge cruise ships at anchor. The town was crowded and with only two hours until we had to meet the bus there was no way to get lunch if Karen was going to do any shopping. We saw a couple of bears on the way, one was having a meal of dandelion blossoms! We...Jump to full entry
Jun 9, 2016 - Day 69 - Two Day Shipping, with Tracking, HA!
I got contacted by my Real Estate Agent and he told me that the gas issues were fixed for the sum of $175. The repairman marked the bill as paid so we wouldn’t have any problems with the title company. What a trusting fellow. I guess I’ll pay the bill. The paperwork for the closing is still showing in Juneau, Alaska according to the postal service tracking website. So, that’s two days and the damn paperwork evidently hasn’t even left Alaska yet. I paid $22.95 for two day shipping, why? I hope it just hasn’t been updated. That’s our...Jump to full entry
Jun 8, 2016 - Day 59 - That Can't Be Good
Well, as I asked, my son called me at the ungodly hour of about 4:45AM (7:45 his time) to let me know where he would be working today. Turns out he is in a much better location to help out today. Then I got a text from the Real Estate agent at 7:15 asking me if I was up and moving yet because there was a problem with the gas company inspection. That can’t be good. It turns out that they had done a pressure test which showed a leak in the system. The gas company couldn’t get back until the 14th to fix it and then it was no telling how much...Jump to full entry
Jun 7, 2016 - Day 58 - $7000 here, $7000 there, $7000 Everywhere
I forgot to mention in yesterday’s post that I had gotten an email with a 30 page attachment for the closing on my house. I had also found out that I would need to wire $6888.99 to the title company for the closing. The closing date is this Friday, June 10th. Now these people have known since April that I was in Alaska and there could be some logistics problems if they waited too long to send me things. Personally I think giving me three days to get these things to them was waiting too long. The first page of the email says "before printing...Jump to full entry
Jun 6, 2016 - Day 57 - First Breath
Natalie from Starlight was in the store today. Thanks to the owner I was invited to go hear her talk about the company, the products and the processes they use. They have a studio in Los Angeles that uses an acrylic called Lucite to embed pieces inside of it. An artist designs a piece and then sends it to Starlight. They make a mold of the piece so they can make multiples of it. Some of the pieces have multiple figures inside the Lucite. The Lucite is opaque and the pour it in the mold up to the level where one of the pieces is to be put...Jump to full entry
Jun 5, 2016 - Day 56 - Smoked Salmon Vodka
Margie and I were both off today. Yea! We went to the store and got few things. I couldn’t believe they had eggs for .99 a dozen. That’s the cheapest we’ve seen them anywhere. I sure didn’t need to worry so much that I cooked over a dozen and froze them in case I couldn’t get them up here or they were too expensive. They have fluctuated a lot in price, but they've always been available. Then we came back and went to the clubhouse for some jambalaya and beans made by the same neighbor who made the gumbo. It was very good. We bought a couple...Jump to full entry
Jun 4, 2016 - Day 55 - Apples and Oranges
I got moved to the store next door today. I was told that that was a plan to see if it would increase sales in my store by moving someone in there that is more knowledgeable about the area and merchandise. Another worker was moved into my store. Shortly after being moved over there I sold a bear carving for over $800 with shipping. Personally I think the problem is trying to compare apples and oranges. The museum store is just that, a museum that most people are coming in to go through the museum, not buy in the store part. Also, we have a...Jump to full entry
