Jun 7, 2016 - Day 58 - $7000 here, $7000 there, $7000 Everywhere

I forgot to mention in yesterday’s post that I had gotten an email with a 30 page attachment for the closing on my house. I had also found out that I would need to wire $6888.99 to the title company for the closing. The closing date is this Friday, June 10th. Now these people have known since April that I was in Alaska and there could be some logistics problems if they waited too long to send me things. Personally I think giving me three days to get these things to them was waiting too long. The first page of the email says "before printing...

Jun 6, 2016 - Day 57 - First Breath

Natalie from Starlight was in the store today. Thanks to the owner I was invited to go hear her talk about the company, the products and the processes they use. They have a studio in Los Angeles that uses an acrylic called Lucite to embed pieces inside of it. An artist designs a piece and then sends it to Starlight. They make a mold of the piece so they can make multiples of it. Some of the pieces have multiple figures inside the Lucite. The Lucite is opaque and the pour it in the mold up to the level where one of the pieces is to be put...

Jun 5, 2016 - Day 56 - Smoked Salmon Vodka

Margie and I were both off today. Yea! We went to the store and got few things. I couldn’t believe they had eggs for .99 a dozen. That’s the cheapest we’ve seen them anywhere. I sure didn’t need to worry so much that I cooked over a dozen and froze them in case I couldn’t get them up here or they were too expensive. They have fluctuated a lot in price, but they've always been available. Then we came back and went to the clubhouse for some jambalaya and beans made by the same neighbor who made the gumbo. It was very good. We bought a couple...

Jun 4, 2016 - Day 55 - Apples and Oranges

I got moved to the store next door today. I was told that that was a plan to see if it would increase sales in my store by moving someone in there that is more knowledgeable about the area and merchandise. Another worker was moved into my store. Shortly after being moved over there I sold a bear carving for over $800 with shipping. Personally I think the problem is trying to compare apples and oranges. The museum store is just that, a museum that most people are coming in to go through the museum, not buy in the store part. Also, we have a...

Jun 3, 2016 - Day 54 - With or Without an Ulterior Motive, it's still Flirting

I was off today and Margie worked. I dumped the tanks and worked on the computer. I got an email yesterday asking me to send receipts and other stuff for any work I had done in the last year to the house I’m selling before closing. So, I checked my computer for anything I had. I sent some paperwork on the carpeting along with the receipt for that work. I also told them that that was the only work that was done by anyone but me. Any other work was just painting and repairs due to normal wear and tear. Sadly I can’t remember what else I did...

Jun 2, 2016 - Day 53 - Bad Math

Well we had a “manager’s” meeting today. I put manager’s in quotes because I am not a manager, but I was asked to attend since I am consistently in one store that does not have a dedicated manager. Neither is Margie, but she was asked to attend, also. She didn’t want to and was hoping the only reason she was told about it was that they sent an email to her to tell me about it. Even though I’ve gotten emails they evidently no longer had mine correct. I liked being included in it. Evidently the sales are down in some stores including mine,...

Jun 1, 2016 - Day 52 - Eeww yuck, Animal Skins

I forgot to mention yesterday that we had a salad for dinner. The lettuce came out of Margie’s garden. After about 2.5 hours this morning we had done about $60 in sales. The first sale was mine over one hour after the store was opened for $12.59. Just about a half hour later we had done about $200 more. We received more animal skins today and Margie had to unload them. She is not at all happy about having to touch the animal skins. If it was just the fur it wouldn’t be so bad but she really doesn’t like that the feet and head are still on...

May 31, 2016 - Day 51 - Card Declined

I forgot to mention in yesterday’s blog the cute little girl that was buying a piece of ivory. She had a huge wad of money with a hair thing around it. I only saw ones. Her total came to $10.50 with tax, she counted out the 10 ones and then tried to get the hair thing back around the wad of money. She had a one track mind. She wasn’t about to get the 50 cents until she got the hair thing around those bills. I finally asked her if she had brought all her savings with her. Her big sister said it was “grandma” money. I asked if she was going...

May 30, 2016 - Day 50 - Keep The Change

Margie and I both worked today. She was by a couple of times doing her shipping. When I went to lunch she was there so I ate back in the shipping room where she was. I saw her packing a lot of expensive knives from the knife store. A lot of her shipping comes from the knife store since people are concerned about carrying the knives with them and I’m not sure they even can. Before I came back there she had already packed the wolf hide I sold yesterday. She wasn’t too happy about having to handle that. I told her that it wasn’t like it was...

May 29, 2016 - Day 49 - Margie Came to Visit

I had to work again and Margie was off again. It just isn’t fair. The manager did say the other day that there isn’t any reason Margie can’t take off next Friday when I’m off. Especially since that is my only day off this week. This is what we’ve been saying all along. The stores are now going to be open seven days a week since there will be ships in every day. The only reason for Margie being off Saturday and Sunday is so she can get the mail Monday through Friday. However, the manager said they could have anyone get the mail and any large...

May 28, 2016 - Day 48 - It's My Birthday

It’s my birthday, and I gotta work. Margie is off. She found me a button with flashing lights that says “Happy Birthday.” My boss went and got me a maple donut with bacon bits on it for my birthday. It’s very slow today. A little while after I had my lunch break the Manager decided to close most of the stores. She was leaving mine open and since it was my birthday she gave me the option of staying or leaving and having someone else take over my store. I ended up opting for going home. I didn’t think we really had anything planned but I just...

May 27, 2016 - Day 47 -Eating out for my Birthday

Margie told me this morning that she was going to pay for something for us to do for my birthday. It won’t be on my birthday. It will just be sometime while we are here. Now I have to figure out what I want to do. There are a lot of things we have talked about, but everything is so expensive that it would have to be for a special occasion. Just taking a ferry ride to one of the other towns is a couple hundred dollars. I would like to see Juneau, the capital of Alaska but the only way to get there is by boat/ferry or plane and it’s very...
