Jun 23, 2016 - Day 74 Week 11 - Is New Jersey in the United States

I saw the wrong coach bus on way into work this morning. I hope it isn’t still driving around from yesterday because the people got on the wrong coach and can’t get off. I parked in a new area one block behind the store on State St. It is more convenient than the parking lot I park in sometimes and probably always has open parking spaces, but I just never thought to park here. There was a father in the store with a little girl probably about eight years old. I was surprised to hear him tell her very matter-of-factly about the walrus penis...

Jun 22, 2016 - Day 73 Week 11 - Wrong Coach

What in the world did people do while they were on vacation before cellphones and other similar technology? Oh, I know they enjoyed the trip, the people they were with and seeing new things. I see more people with their noses stuck in their smartphones and not seeing anything around them. They might as well just use all that technology and just take a virtual vacation. Hell, they can even order all their souvenirs online. Yes it’s mostly the younger generation but it is older people too. Now you may as well just stay home since you think...

Jun 21, 2016 - Day 72 Week 11 - Well Stop Rubbing It

Yesterday was the summer solstice, the longest day of the year and obviously the shortest time of darkness. Sunrise was at about 3:30AM and sunset was at about 10:30PM for a total of 19 hours of daylight here in Skagway and consequently only about 5 hours of darkness. However, I have found out that there is a period of time that is referred to as civil twilight, which occurs when the Sun is less than 6 degrees below the horizon. In the morning, civil twilight begins when the Sun is 6 degrees below the horizon and ends at sunrise. In the...

Jun 20, 2016 - Day 71, Week 11 - Rut Roh!

One of our co-working Workampers drives his class C RV in to town every day that he works because they don’t have another vehicle. Well today he forgot to unhook his water hose when he pulled out. He didn’t realize it until he got to town and saw the hose still trailing behind his RV. I don’t know if anything from the water hookup was attached to it also. He came back to the campground and saw that he had broken the connection and caused a leak. He contacted the person staying next to him that has some maintenance duties. He contacted the...

Jun 19, 2016 - Day 70 - A puzzling Day

Once again, I’m not sure what days some of the things I’m writing happened on. However, does it really matter if I tell you about something that happened and I put it on the wrong day? The only one it bothers is me because I’m the only one who knows the difference and I don’t always know. Margie set up a table in the community room for a puzzle and put one of ours on it for everyone to work on. Not sure I ever mentioned it but I put a battery operated motion sensing light in one of our cabinets that is very dark where we store our pots and...

Jun 18, 2016 - Day 69 - Confusion and Deja Vu

Now that I posted several days that I couldn’t remember a lot to say I find notes, recordings and pictures of things for those days. I think this was on Thursday the 16th that a ship crew member left a pouch at the counter. It had a lot of money in it and his company ID along with a few other cards. I saw more than one $100 bill. A lady I was checking out noticed it and tried to stop the lady that had been in front of her, thinking it was hers. Luckily she didn’t catch her, because when she brought the pouch back I found the ID and...

Jun 17, 2016 - Day 68 - Hair in all the Wrong Places

Once again Margie made me think of “Little Things That You Do” because she trimmed some of my extraneous hairs, such as, eye brows, ears, etc. I’m working by myself today and didn’t do too bad as far as sales are concerned. Someone had to use Margie’s company truck so she used ours for a while today. This will be really short because I can’t think of anything else to write. Margie and I are both off for the weekend again. There is a Summer Solstice party at the ballpark tomorrow. Of course the summer solstice is the longest day of the...

Jun 16, 2016 - Day 67 - Little Things, That You Do

I hate having to remember things so far back when I get so far behind on the blog. I wrote most of the following for yesterday’s blog but then thought it actually happened today. Maybe it was yesterday that we discussed her helping me, I don’t know. However, I have decided that today is the day that she actually got my money back for me. So, I am putting it all on this day regardless of when it happened. Margie did something this morning that made me have a song in my head all day. She volunteered to see if she could get the refund for me....

Jun 15, 2016 - Day 66 - How Was Your Experience

The manager finally got the ATM going in my store. One of the first people to use it told me that it wasn’t giving a receipt. So, up goes the “Out of Order Sign” again. I texted the manager and she came over and put the out of order sign up. However, she came back soon after and got it printing receipts. I sold some rather expensive pieces today and the customers wanted them shipped. So, I contacted the manager several times about shipping costs. One time she wanted me to send her a picture of the piece. Wouldn’t you know, this is when my...

Jun 14, 2016 - Skagway

There was one thing that we said we HAD to do if we came to Alaska and that was to ride a dogsled. Today was our day to do just that. Flying in a helicopter at 6500 feet among Alaska snowy mountains and glaciers was amazing! The pilot dropped us off at a dog camp that sits on Denver Glacier. It was like being in another world up there. Nathan, our dog musher, his wife and their 14 dogs live in Alaska during the summer and in Vermont in the winter. He introduced us to the dog team that pulled our sled and talked about living on a glacier. We...

Jun 13, 2016 - Day 64 - A BOOK FOR THE TRAIN!

Margie and I both worked today. As is her normal routine now she does inventory on Mondays. A girl was in the store today and she had one of those scooter things for people who have broken there foot, ankle or some lower extremity. She mentioned that she broke it four weeks ago in the Bahamas. So, four weeks ago she was in the Bahamas and now she is on a cruise in Alaska. Just how much money and free time do these people have? I have learned what an inuksuk is. It resembles a totem pole but the natives stacked rocks to make a directional...
