Aug 17, 2016 - Day 52 Skagway

Day 52. Garden City RV. Went on a hike this AM.....a serious hike! VERY steep and full of tree roots and rocks. also wet. Made it a half mile to the top, decided to turn around rather than going down other side then back up and down again. Really pretty with moss covering everything. Then went and took a mile walk around an old town. That was kind of boring as there's really nothing left. There were a ton of tour groups..hiking, biking, scootering, rafting, and horseback riding. These tour companies do a booming business. Last day in AK....

It was 17 blocks to town. Fudge shop. Back to RV for lunch then back to town for '80's show. Pretty good...musical history of Skagway, complete with can- can girls. A little more shopping and back to trailer. Got in a good amount of walking. Overcast and very windy, but no rain!

We're taking the shortest drive of our trip today and it will take us the longest time to get there. We're headed to Skagway, AK by way of the ferry from Haines, AK. We arrived at the ferry terminal at 11:45 to get in line and wait our turn to board the ferry which departs at 2:45 for a scheduled 3:45 arrival. When all was said and done we drove a total of 6 miles and arrived at the RV Park at 5:00pm. It was quite the experience!!!

Going Down MC's-LANE

Aug 15, 2016 - Day 50 Skagway

Day 50. Garden City RV Park. Washed RV......sort of. Couldn't get both sides of RV with brush...sort of just wet it down to get most of the construction mud off. Then went down to the ferry terminal to wait. Had to be there 2 hours before departure. We were one of the first to arrive and almost the last to board. The crew really helps direct you. The ride was a little over an hour. We were one of the first to depart. Had to back up around a corner and then head out. They very carefully directed us. Then we got a thumbs up from other cars...

Aug 14, 2016 - Week 18 8/8-8/14 But it's a Dry Rain, or, I'll Sell you a Quarter for a Dollar

I forgot to mention last week that I got a refund from Amazon for my order that was delayed for about 19 days. It took Amazon 15 days and a lot of complaining from me just to ship my items. We in Alaska think it is an effort on Amazon’s part to not ship to Alaska to those who have Prime. Meaning with Prime you get free shipping. So, Amazon would rather get you to cancel your order and let them off the hook rather than pay the shipping costs. However, during the rounds of emails back and forth I was promised once a $15 credit toward another...

Aug 8, 2016 - Week 17 8/1-8/7 Choo Choo!

I tried something new and put some pictures right in the blog. Monday I played with my new stuff from Amazon in the evening. The shredder seems fine but the portable scanner is going to take some learnin’. Tuesday I saw helicopters landing on my way to work and it seemed like a nice day but a woman said that her helicopter ride that she scheduled several months ago was cancelled. The next day my co-worker said he saw helicopters landing on his way home today. I think the power and telephone company needed them for work they were doing in a...

Aug 4, 2016 - Skagway, Alaska

Leaving Teslin, in the Yukon Territory, on our way to Skagway, Alaska, we stopped in Carcross, still in the Yukon Territory. Here they had on display “The Duchess,” a small engine built in 1878, originally to haul coal. From 1900 to 1919, she carried tourists on excursions from Atlin across the mountain to Carcross. Riding her was an adventure; passengers often had to get out and push her up the mountain. We’ve looked in various places for her partner, made at the same time, “The Duke,” but so far in our travels we haven’t seen him. At...

Jul 31, 2016 - Week 16 7/25-7/31 Wanted: Tomato Thief

Week 16 7/25-7/31 Monday Man it happens so often and it’s so irritating to have people continually talk about walruses being killed for their ivory tusks and other parts. First off a lot of the walrus ivory and other stuff comes from walruses that die of natural causes on the beaches. Let’s just let them lay there and rot because people are so stupid and do not know the whole story. I’m sure these are the same people who think nothing of going down to the grocery store and buying hamburger (ground BEEF, otherwise known as cow) or chickens,...

Jul 28, 2016 - Travel from Skagway to Watson's Lake, Yukon

July 28 We woke today in Skagway to cloudy skies, but no rain. We need the clouds to lift so the mail planes can land with our package. To explain the package, we had a part for out tow hitch ( which I lost) overnighted from Washington state to our RV park in Skagway. Overnight in Alaska could mean days depending on weather. If we don't get it, it would mean me following John in the car rather than being able to tow the car behind the RV. We could wait for the part, but we had planned on meeting friends we met in Seward, AK for dinner in...

Jul 27, 2016 - Ferry Ride from Haines to Skagway

This journal entry is for yesterday July 26 & Today, July 27. We left Haines in wet weather taking the Alaskan Ferry to Skagway. It's a 10 mile journey by water vs a 3325 mile journey by land. We choose the ferry of course. Watching them load all the campers , RVs and cars was quite the ballet. It was amazing how many could fit!!! Once settled in on the Ferry, we were able to sit back and relax in one of the common areas and watch the beautiful scenery. It was raining, and the clouds were low on the mountains making for a low visibility...

Jul 27, 2016 - Rainy Skagway

July 27. I'm 4 days late in posting. Just found Wifi at our campground. Our first full day in Skagway. Its rainy, but not storming. So we dressed the part and headed out to explore the town. 4 new cruise ships had docked during the night. So the town was buzzing with tourist. We headed to the visitors center to watch a film that explained how Skagway played an important role in the Gold Rush boom to the Yukon Territory. Skagway was the starting town for what is called the White Pass that goes over the Mountain 30 miles or so into Canada to...

Jul 25, 2016 - 7/25/2016 Emergency!!

I’m making another change to the blog. I will try to just put the unusual and post it the day it happens if I can. This evening we were eating dinner and heard yelling. Margie thought it was the bicycle tour that comes down the highway in front of the campground. I was sitting in a way that I could see one of our fellow campers hurrying over to another one. Then someone else headed over. As I went to wash the barbeque sauce off my hands Margie went to the bedroom window and asked if they needed help. She was told they did. So, we headed...
