Not much to report today. In the morning John and I ride again to Ninilchik to set up a halibut trip for tomorrow. John and Tom will have to call in the AM to make sure there are enough signed up to go. It is a six passenger boat. Our "neighbor" in the park recommended this charter captain. If they fish out of Ninilchik instead of Homer they only have an hour drive in the morning. We take Kalifornsky Beach Road back to Kenai thinking it will be more scenic since it is closer to the Cook Inlet. We explore several side roads to the beach but...

Jul 6, 2006 - Ninilchuk, Alaska (Kenai Peninsula)

Today, we are in Niniluchuk - along the Kenai peninsula. We have not had good weather but it hasn't rained. It is about 55 degrees but cold and damp. But...today we were able to see (briefly) at least one of the volcanos across the Cook Inlet. Mt. Augustine has just finished (hopefully) erupting - thought they were going to evacuate the peninsula. Apparently, they are expecting the side to be blown off and slide into the inlet which would cause a major tsunami. Needless to say, I am not planning to camp on the beach just in case. Anyway,...

Jul 3, 2006 - Portage to Seward, AK

Tried to write this once and lost it, so here is the abbreviated version. Drove down the Seward Highway this morning after taking some more photos of the awesome Byron Glacier and the ice bergs on Portage Lake - with my long lens (70-300mm). The drive was lovely and the road was nice. The scenery was beautiful - including mountains and lakes and snow. The day was pretty too with blue sky and sunny skies - but not really warm - only about 62 degrees at the highest. Tried to get a spot at the Waterfront campground in Seward but it was full...
