Jul 31, 2018 - Ketchikan

I’m in ALASKA ! ! ! This is state #49 that I have visited! Arrived in port in Ketchikan about 7:00 am and docked at Dock 2 while the Emerald Princess was tied up at Dock 4. That is one huge ship! We are on the port side and had harbor views until disembarking to go on our excursion - what a cute town! It is like a movie set for an old western movie. Wooden buildings along two streets and then houses up the hillside. The land is extremely hilly and very rocky - no such thing as a front yard here! We met our bus driver/tour guide, Stone, and...

Jul 23, 2018 - Ketchikan

We arrived in Ketchikan at 9:30 am on Monday so Steve and I lounged around for a while because our excursions were started around noon. There were a lot of ships in port that day so we had to dock outside the harbor and use tenders to get us to short. I went a bit earlier than my scheduled time so that I could spend some time wandering around Juneau. Steve had developed a bit of a sore throat so I was on the lookout for some medicine for him. I searched for a drugstore but ended up at an IGA grocery store that happened to have a small...

Ferry from Prince Rupert to Ketchikan Our ferry was scheduled to leave from Prince Rupert at 8 PM and arrive in Ketchikan at 2 AM. It departed a bit late. It was beautiful leaving but we didn’t spend a lot of time outdoors so we could try to get at least a few hours sleep before our Ketchikan arrival. We arrived around 2:30. Did a very orderly departure from the ferry and headed to the local Walmart so we could sleep a few more hours. Here’s some trivia that Bob learned. The Ketchikan Walmart is the fourth smallest in the country. We...

Jun 15, 2018 - Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan, June 15 We arrived on Ketchikan around 10 am. It's a cute little town nestled on a hillside. Ketchikan is Alaska's first city and the Salmon Capital of the World. It was about 50 degrees this morning with a brisk wind, but not bad with a jacket. It got up to 64 today, but the wind was still cool. After some walking, shopping and then lunch, we sat in the hot tub again. We were the only ones using the hot tubs and no one was in the pool at that time. Gala dinner tonight. Serving surf and turf, lobster tail and filet mignon… I gave...

Aug 15, 2017 - Ketchikan - Fourth Port of Call

Ketchikan sits on the Revillagugedo Island and is surrounded by the largest national forest in the US. Tongass National Forest encompasses 16.9 million acres of varied landscapes. There are mountains covered in forests, glaciers, old volcanic cones, rivers, fjords and countless lakes. This was our last port of call and it was truly amazing. We took a combination tour, flying and boating through Misty Fjords National Monument. We left Ketchikan in a 6 passenger float plane. I was sent to the tail of the plane, which was nice because I had...

Aug 29, 2016 - good bye Ketchikan

Lazy, rainy morning. Went to the Saxman Native Village to see more totem poles. Busloads of cruise ship passengers were on tours here. We walked around, looked at the poles, glanced in the workshop and eavesdropped on some of the tours. Would have liked to go into the clan house but that was for tour groups only. We then went back to the Alaska Fish House for lunch, wandered around the tourist shops ( there were several cruise ships in today) and went to pick up the fish we were going to take with us. Tried to get a little rest in as we had...

Aug 28, 2016 - Hiking and fishing

We awakened to overcast skies but no rain. We dressed and went for a morning walk around Ward Lake. There was a nice part to follow from the campground. The lake was beautiful and many people were taking advantage of the lack of rain to enjoy the outside. The fish were jumping and there were several fisherman fly fishing in the lake. We went back to the RV and got ready for our half day of salmon fishing. The skies really clouded up so we also grabbed rain gear. As we were driving to City Float, where we were meeting Captain Mike, it...

Aug 27, 2016 - Alison's birthday

In the morning we packed up to go to the other campground, as we started getting closer we noticed crowds, lots of crowds. We then found out that the Cross Country meet was being held around the campground. Luckily, the Jeep and the RV were not connected and I led Glenn into the campground. I had to untie some barriers strung between the trees to get to our site. We quickly set up camp and high tailed it out of there. We went to the downtown area where the cruise ship docks are and found a ghost town. Apparently, when there are no cruise...

Aug 26, 2016 - Onward to Ketchikan

At all of our stops, Kake, Petersburg, and Wrangell , more high school students and their coaches board the ferry. There were a total of 198 high school students on the ferry with us and they were camped out everywhere. All the lounges were wall to wall sleeping bags. The ferry had to announce a request that the students vacate tables in the dining room during meal time so the rest of the passengers could have a seat. I was very happy we had a cabin to escape from the craziness. I found it very interesting that this is the way the student...

Jun 16, 2016 - Ketchikan

Ketchikan is home to the largest collection of totem poles in the world and is also famous for salmon fishing. The look and feel of the town is very warm and comfortable compared to our past few days of glaciers and wildlife tundra. We walked along the main downtown area and down the Creek Street District. Creek Street was once Ketchikan’s infamous red-light district. During Prohibition, Creek Street was home to numerous speakeasies, and in the early 1900s more than 30 houses, built on stilts over the creek waters, have been restored as...
