Aug 6, 2016 - denali national park

Aug 6-8 We are off to Denali National Park, it is a 126 miles but it will be taking about 4 hours. Some beautiful large valley’s. We did not see any animals along the roadway. We did get a peak Denali from the Nanana River which the mountain is 150 miles away. We stayed at the Denali Rainbow Village RV Park, just across from the Princess Lodge, where we stayed last year. The next morning, we spent 10 hours on the bus going 63 miles going into the Denali National Park. We did see some animals, this time. Not far off the road, we got a great...

Aug 5, 2016 - Denali

August 5, 2016 Today was an amazing day in Denali that started at 6:15 am. As luck would have it, we got the best guide and driver in the park as acclaimed by several park service folks. Although Craig is amongst the youngest of drivers and guides both in age and tenure, he is the “go to” guy for information. He talked non-stop for most of the 10 hours we were on the bus regaling us with many of his park and life experiences in the past 11 years. Fascinating wildlife detail and not bored for one minute! To clarify the Denali wilderness,...

Aug 4, 2016 - Nenana to Denali

August 4, 2016 About 5:00 it stopped raining so we took a walk about town. Other than A Street (the main one) none of the streets were paved. Many of the houses are log cabins with the fridge on the porch next to a super-sized communications dish. Aside from 3 shacks that serve as bars, there was a muraled grocery store, a very small inn with microbrewery, senior center, community center and the historic train station that served as a gift shop. Camp is actually the bright spot in town. Was nice to come home to dinner already prepared! With...

Jul 30, 2016 - Finally, arrived at Denali NP

We departed the Grizzly Bear RV Park and headed to Denali NP in hopes of getting a camp site in Denali park, but not to be, they were all full, so we headed on down the road for a mile and secured a spot at at Denali Rainbow RV camp, basically just a parking lot, but they did have hook-ups, so life is good, and we're only about a mile from the entrance to the park. We went to Denali and got signed up for a 6.5 hr bus ride into Denali park, departing at 3 pm, so we have a couple hours to kill. We went to the Denali visitor center, which was...

Jul 29, 2016 - Depart Big Lake AK - Destination Denali Park

We stayed just one night at Big Lake AK, wasn't much there, but a pretty lake. We headed toward Denali Nat'l Park, it's a rainy day, arrived at Denali Grizzly Bear RV Park around 6 PM, we traveled 185 miles today which is a pretty big day for us pulling the trlr. We secured a camp site at this park, tried hard to find high ground to park the trlr., this was not an easy task with all the rain they have gotten. We're only about 20 miles from the entrance to Denali NP, and we're positioning ourselves to try to get a camping spot in Denali for...

Jul 18, 2016 - Denali NP Teklanika Campground

We are staying in Teklanika campground at Mile 29 of the Denali Park highway for 6 days. It is pretty cool right on the river 12 miles past were anyone can travel but tour buses. Day 1: Long bus rides today, lots of stuff happened. We saw some cool animals, a couple of neat visitor’s centers, a lot of rain and fog, and just a little car sickness. We would have had a great picture of a grizzly bear standing on it’s hind legs but Dad the camera!!!!!! I took a picture of Mom looking unhappy/scared hanging over a cliff, but Dad won’t let me...

Jul 17, 2016 - Flight tour

We got to fly today! When I woke up and looked out the window I was not very optimistic about us making the flight tour today. It was kinda foggy and didn't look much better than yesterday when we got cancelled..... twice. We kept waiting on the cancellation call that never came, so we got in the car and drove to where we were to meet. Still had our doubts but our driver showed up and to the airport we went to board the plane. Again I'm unable to describe the beauty. We both took dozens of pictures and we would catch a good one once in a...

Jul 16, 2016 - Flight cancelled

When we got home (parking pullout) last night we had lots of company, about 5 other RVs. We always say that our motorhome has a magnetic personality as it always seems to attract other RVs. Ha. We were suppposed to meet our pilot at 8 this morning for our hour and a half flight around Mt. Whitney but the weather postponed that until this afternoon. So we decided to go to the visitor center and look around at the park. Then we stopped by town to get a half gallon of milk ($7) and let Karen do some shopping. Our flight was cancelled again...

Jul 15, 2016 - Denali tour

It looked like it might rain this morning and the weatherman was saying the same thing. Undeterred we headed off to the Denali visitor center to set up a shuttle tour. We decided to take the 8 hour tour. We didn't have much hope of seeing Denali because of the clouds but were hoping to see some of the wildlife. The park was beautiful as expected, again the pictures don't do it justice. It rained occasionally and the sun peeked through at times. This photo is where we should have been able to see Denali if it weren't for the clouds. We...

Jul 14, 2016 - Denali

I really don't know what they are called but I call them pine knots. Alaskans seem rather fond of them as they display them proudly all around the house especially on the front porches. We finally had a chance to watch a moose grazing in a pond. It's something to see for sure, he sticks his whole head completely under the water, and he can eat and hold his breath for quite a while. I'm guessing a couple of minutes. We made it to Denali around noon and checked on what was available as far as RV parking goes. Then went in search of a...

Jul 11, 2016 - Denali NP #1

We drove through around Denali NP entrance area. It was a clear day so we got another great look at "the mountain." The savage campground area was closed because of a bear attack. Mom got attacked by a sea gull Bomber Thief (TB) who took a piece of her sandwich right out of her hand. In the afternoon Mom, Dad, Grandma, Jim and Julia Grigsby and I went on a nature hike to the sled dog kennels. Mom took a pic of me "mushing" the dog sled.

Jul 5, 2016 - DENALI

We stayed at Grizzly Bear Campground outside Denali. While we were checking in we inquired about The Denali Backcountry Adventure Trip we had read about in the AAA Tour Guide. Joe tried to book the trip on the computer while at Fairbanks, but was not successful. The receptionist had a number to call and she was told they had two seats available for tomorrow !!!! She was amazed and so were we, but gladly signed up. The bus left at 6:15AM, and we knew it was going to be a 13 hour trip. The bus travels along the 95 mile Denali Park Road to the...
