Jul 25, 2010 - Delta Junction

We attended church at Delta Presbyterian/ Faith Lutheran Church. It was the Sunday for the Presbyterian Liturgy. Also had Communion. The pastor, Rev Carin Bjorn Von Letzendorf (Pastor Bear) is from Sweden. She was also the DJ Volunteer Fire Chief until she recently resigned. A friendly congregation even though small in number. The old church building we attended in '71-'73 is still on the property, but unused. It is much smaller than we remembered. At 2:00 pm the Delta Junction 50th Anniversary of becoming a city celebration began. They...

Jul 24, 2010 - Chugiak to Delta Junction

Miles Today: 318 Trip Miles: 6833 Left the Klein's at 9:30 am. Stopped in Palmer at the Visitors Center. Learned that the Farmers Market was yesterday. Toured the beautiful demonstration garden. Had a gorgeous day for the drive up through the Matanuska Valley and beyond to Glennallen. As when we drove this road the opposite direction on Day 32 it has more frost heaves the closer to Glennallen you get. Hit one pretty hard, but survived. As we headed north on the Richardson Hwy. it began to cloud up. At MP 203 north of Summit Lake we saw a...

Jul 4, 2010 - Fairbanks to Delta Junction

Left the River Port RV Park at 11:00 am, filled with fuel at Sam's Club and headed south. Stopped at the Santa Claus House in North Pole, AK. It's been there for years and even though it is mainly a souvenir shop, they respond to kids who write letters to Santa. Next stop was The Knotty Shop where they have a display of various critters made from spruce tree burls. They also sell tree trunks with burls for $8 & $10 per foot that you can make your own creations with. Made photo stops along the Tanana River which is high and wide due to...

Jul 3, 2010 - On Northward to Delta Junction and Rica's Roadhouse

Saturday July 3 – We started off a bit later than planned heading back up the South section of the Richardson Highway to Glenallen. From Glenallen we started on the North section of the Richardson Highway that leads toward Fairbanks. This highway started as a trail and became a wagon road in 1910. It was made suitable for automobiles in the 1920’s and not paved until 1957. We encountered a number of frost heaves and road damage but all in all the road is in good shape. The Alaska Pipeline can be seen at many points along the road with...

Jun 28, 2010 - Visiting Old Friends in Delta Junction

Jon Dufendach fixed us breakfast. Carol took one of their daughters to Fairbanks for a Dr. appointment. Helped Jon a little with repairing a hose reel that the wildfire folks had use recently. The pavers came to do his driveway so we moved the MH to Green Acres RV Park and Marge stayed there. Jon's son Curt picked Jon & Ken up after lunch and drove us out to Delta Industrial's Fab Shop and gravel pit operation. Looked over the asphalt plant that temporarilylily located there and then Curt got called away to some other business so didn't get...

Jun 27, 2010 - Tok to Delta Junction, Alaska

Miles Today: 100 Total Miles: 4,412 Rained most of the night and morning in Tok. Checked out the offerings at the Visitor Center located in one of the largest log structures in the state. Very well done. Alaska has certainly stepped up its presentation to visitors since 37 years ago. Picked up some homemade fudge at the All Alaska Gift Shop nearby. Sun came out, turning the day into a beautiful one. Called Jon Dufendach in Delta Junction to advise him that we were finally arriving. Jon was Ken's civilian boss at the Arctic Test Center in...

Jun 22, 2010 - Rika's Roadhouse

We woke up to a beautiful day - sunny and pleasant. After breakfast we drove over to Rika's Roadhouse which is one of the original roadhouses that serviced travelers in the early days on the Richardson Highway. (Early Alaska Roadhouses were sort of the combination Hotel/Service Plaza of their day.) The roadhouse is located just north of Delta Junction, on the banks of the Tanana River. We walked the grounds which included the roadhouse, the original telegraph buildings, a museum building with grass growing on the roof, Rika's barn - built...

Our Alaska Journey

Jun 22, 2010 - June 22nd, Delta Junction, Alaska

We traveled 176 miles today. We gassed up and left Chicken at 9 o'clock. The road was still dirt and muddy for several miles. It soon became paved and gravel sections. We did see an eagle but we weren't able to get a picture though. The RV was quite dirty from the muddy dirt road, so we stopped and washed it in Tok. We also picked up groceries there. We drove on to the camp we are spending the night about 10 miles short of Delta Junction. Today we didn't run the heater in the RV much for a change. It is still sweatshirt weather though. We...

Jun 21, 2010 - End Of The Alaska Highway

Yesterday (June 20) was a non-travel day. We were staying in Sourdough RV Park, the first campground built in Tok. They have a pancake breakfast which is why Sandy picked it, but we found out it cost $12 a person! We felt that was overly expensive, so we fixed a breakfast of cocoa and toast in our RV. It rained most of the day yesterday, so we mostly just relaxed in our RV, although Jeff did go out to fuel the truck and pick up a few supplies. We also went back to Fast Eddy's Restaurant for supper (Halibut this time). Today was to be a...

Our Alaska Journey

Jun 16, 2010 - Delta Junction, AK

Campground: Smith's Green Acres RV Park Before we left Tok, we took the rig down to the gas station where Richard had filled up the truck yesterday and hosed it down. At least you can see the colors again. The road was relatively smooth to Delta Junction and there is still a decided lack of critters. The day was sunny and bright and it actually got somewhat warm. Murray and Shelle and we stopped at the Delta Meat and Sausage Co. where we sampled enough to serve for lunch and bought some buffalo sausage and breakfast ham. We planned to...

North to Alaska 2010

Jun 16, 2010 - Delta Junction, Alaska

Today I decided to wash the truck and trailer as we left. Susan went into the office and paid the $15 for the wash (do it yourself). I pulled up behind somebody already in progress. We waited for one hour while this guy worked in slow motion. Susan asked him if he was going to be much longer and he said he was going to take lots more time as he wanted to do it all again. We got a refund and left. On the drive we saw some spectacular scenery and we saw a river that still had ice. When we got to the rv park in Delta Junction we paid $14 to...
