Jul 10, 2006 - Chicken!

When Chet and I left North Pole, we had planned on stopping in Tok, Alaska for the night. As we came closer to Tok, we decided to go on to Chicken instead. Tok is just hub for all the different routes with the Alaska Highway, the Glenn Highway and the Taylor Highway all cross in this town. Except for four campgrounds, some gift shops, several restaurants, and motels, Tok is not a sightseeing town. Since it was only lunchtime, we felt we should go farther down the road to Chicken. Arriving in Chicken, Chet and I were in for a shock. They...

Alaska Bound

Jul 6, 2006 - July 5, 2006

WEDNESDAY, JULY 5, 2005 Today we did a lot of work around the motorhome and camp. We did four loads of laundry and also cleaned the motorhome inside and out. We also dumped because our holding tanks were getting rather full. While I tended laundry in the pleasant laundromat here at the campground, Jack went to find out about the crack in the pickup windshield. The fellow who was recommended by the campground turned out to be very helpful and very honest. He suggested that we wait to fix it, but he did manage to direct the crack down to the...

May 23, 2006 - Dawson City to Chicken, AK

A 1000 pictures couldn't do this drive justice. About 125 miles of mostly dirt and gravel road at 25 mph over the most scenic mountains I've ever seen. Closest I can compare is the road through Rocky Mountain Park in Colorado. But that's paved. I forgot to take a picture of Chicken, AK. I stopped there and had a burger and fried potatoes for lunch. I was their first paying customer of the year. Interesting place. Named after the ptarmagin (bird) which is also called a chicken. Chicken was easier to spell. Spent the night at a BLM campground...

Aug 15, 2005 - Tok, Chicken, and Dawson City

I lost a couple days...we were not in places to connect to the web. So, I have a little catching up to do. We left Anchorage yesterday, we were all ready to pull out, but I could not leave without saying good bye to Lara. We went over to her place and took her for a quick breakfast and then we dropped her off at her church. Then back to hook up the trailer and we got away about 10:30...later than we expected. We intended to reach Tok, but didn't make it that far. It had been a difficult and emotional day, we were tired, and we pulled into...

Jul 27, 2005 - Top of the World Highway / Chicken

July 27 - Top of the World / Chicken A lot of folks go from Whitehorse to Dawson City and then drive West thru the 'Top of the World' Highway to the Alaska border and then thru Chicken and down to Tok. We took the southern route. I had heard the northern route was a tough drive, so we thought we would check part of it out today by driving in the Honda from Tok to the Canadian border and back. They estimate the Tok to Dawson City drive to be 6 hours and it would be every bit of that for a motorhome. It's only about 170 miles but you need to...
