Jun 15, 2016 - May 30th...Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage is beautifully situated on Cook Inlet and surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. The town provided a free shuttle into town to see their restaurants and the town which we did after our excursion to Portage Glacier and the Alaskan Wildlife Conservation Center. The later is a refuge for injured animals and is partially supported by the cruise industry. We were in for a treat at this small wildlife center, we saw an eagle injured by shotgun 25 years ago who is a permanent resident of the center as it can not fly any longer. We also saw...

Alaska 2016

Jun 15, 2016 - Anchorage - Day 1 in Alaska

Both flights went well and we arrived in Anchorage at the expected 1:30 a.m. arrival time. During the wait at O'Hare, we visited with a young man who insisted that we visit Whittier on our adventures. That wasn't exactly on our itinerary, but we are flexible so maybe we will take his advice! As soon as our luggage appeared, we caught a shuttle to a local hotel. Although we requested a late check-out due to our late arrival, we were too excited to sleep! We found our way to the Great American Holidays to see about our RV rental. Since we...

Our Travels

Jun 4, 2016 - Back to Anchorage the hard way. By Air

Adventures in air travel 6-3-16 After over a month in Colorado, Virginia, and points in between, we are headed back to Anchorage by air. What was suppose to be a long day of air travel turned out to be more like 3 days. Things started out well. Got up early and washed all of the bedding and towels did some last minuet clean up of the cabin. We took the Estes Park shuttle to Denver airport which picked us up at the post office in Glen Haven at 10AM. The shuttle driver was great and made the long drive to DIA enjoyeable. We arrived at DIA...

Apr 24, 2016 - Val and Spence visit Alaska

4-24-16 Val and Spence visits Alaska Just concluded a visit from Val and Spence (Julie’s sister and her husband), who traveled all the way from California to spend their vacation with us in Alaska. They came up on April 14 which we thought might be a bit early in the season. We need not have worried. Our mild winter, coupled with Val and Spence bringing along some great weather, almost made it a summer like visit. Well, almost. We did a few road trips, saw Denali in its spectacular glory (something not all visitors can say), went to our...

Feb 21, 2016 - Headed South......again

Winter trip 2016 It’s time to head south again! The original plan was for Julie and I to fly to Las Vegas in early March to attend a basketball tournament. We were going to spend a few days in Vegas with some old friends then fly home afterwards. A nice mid-winter break. Well, there has been a little change in plans. The first change involved Julie breaking her ankle in late January. She slipped on ice and pop went her right fibula! She is doing fine, but travel with a leg on the mend is no fun. The next change was the purchase of a new...

Oct 6, 2015 - Anchorage Departure

Departed Anchorage on Alaska Airlines flight to Seattle. Rita and Mary Sholton were on flight south with me. Their entire family went to Dubai last year for Rita's 84th birthday. They said they had a great time. Encouraged me to take a camel riding tour in the desert. Think instead I will stick to the beach! Emirates Airlines flight is half-way around the world to Dubai, UAE. The flat map does not properly depict the flight pattern. The flight goes almost directly over the north pole. Dubai is exactly halfway around the globe from...

Oct 4, 2015 - Anchorage

Our trip began in Anchorage after we had a tour of the city, got settled into our hotel. At six pm the mixer was followed by dinner at the Captain Cook, the 7th floor three directional glassed sky view room. Ocean, mountain and city views surrounded us as we enjoed a lovely meal and introductions. The lead tour director is Robert, from Ottawa, a good natured seasoned travel adventurer. Robert was in the Canadian astronaut program and missed the final cut to Marc Garneau whom he remains friends with today. He is an excellent logistics...

Sep 27, 2015 - Fall Equinox

Yesterday was the first day that there was more dark than light during the day here in Anchorage. We are losing about 5 1/2 minutes per day of light, which adds up quick. When I first arrived sunrise to sunset was from about 5:45am to 10pm. Now it is about 7:40am and 7:30pm. This week the weather was cool, but nice at the start. I took a hike on one of the mountains surrounding Anchorage called Flat Top. It was a steep, but beautiful hike. There was even some snow at the higher elevations, even though it didn't feel that cold. For all my...

Sep 4, 2015 - Seward Highway

We left Anchorage this morning and drove to Seward in the rain. We stopped to see the Exit Glacier and as we turned in the road to visitor's center it stopped raining. Very nice and nice walk to the glacier. We had a nice lunch of Halibut and chips at Rays Seafood on the harbor and made the return trip to Anchorage. Hope to take in some of the agriculture area around Palmer tomorrow.

Aug 24, 2015 - Denali in its entirety

Finally in Anchorage but more about that later. We spent 3 great days at Denali. We got there on Thursday but couldn't get into the park so we stayed at a parking lot campground right outside the park. Our site was, however, right behind a funky little restaurant that we loved. Order at the counter and go sit down, everything home made, very unique stuff and mainly a coffee house. Had dinner there and we had to go back for breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage gravy and biscuits. Very good. We had made reservations at Denali Park...

Aug 23, 2015 - Glacier cruise

About an hour and a half south from Anchorage is Whitter, where we caught the boat for the glacier cruise. I got a ton of pictures but before the end of the 5 hour boat ride, my camera battery died. I finished up on with my phone camera, but my phone is being weird about uploading any data so I have to work on get those pictures to load. But here's a start at least.

Aug 22, 2015 - Berry picking!

Went berry picking today. As describe by a local website this is the place we went. Rendezvous Peak Trail Glenn Highway north to Arctic Valley exit. End of Arctic Valley Road, adjacent to Alpenglow Ski Area. Find a gorgeous mountain bowl drenched with blueberries, mossberries, crowberries and cranberries. As you can see from the photos it was truly gorgeous. I had no idea there were berries called mossberries and crowberries (sounded a little like something Willy Wonka would make up). However the most plentiful berry were the crowberry (...
