Sep 1, 2016 - Back in Anchorage to rest up and get Elgs to airport

I was under the weather so Gail, Ron and Marsha went to see the Earthquake park at edge of Anchorage and Cook Inlet. Of course rain is moving in this evening and for 4-5 days. Right when we have to drive into Canada past Destruction Bay, where the name is appropriate!

2016 Trip to Alaska

Aug 10, 2016 - Anhcorage

August 10, 2016 The Alaska Zoo is not your typical zoo! This zoo provides homes for more than 130 orphaned or injured animals from both the arctic and subarctic climates. It is also home to other non-native species including Bactrian camels, Amur tigers, snow leopard and Tibetan Yak. The non-native species came from other world zoos because of the specialty of the Anchorage zoo. For most exhibits there was an explanation of how and why the animal was residing in the zoo. For most, the animals would not have survived had they not been...

Aug 9, 2016 - anchorage

Aug 9-12 Anchorage is 239 miles and 7.5 hour drive. We are staying at the Golden Nugget RV Park. The road had some rough spots, we got some more of Alaska’s Other Season, ROAD CONSTRUCTION. Since, it rained off and on all day, we did not get to see Denali. Margaret was disappointed but we might try to take a float plane(flight seeing) trip on a clear day to see it. We had a 6 hour Bus tour of Anchorage, and the surrounding area. We saw a movie about Anchorage and the Iditarod. It was a pretty good movie. Afterward, Margaret, Bill, Mel and...

Aug 9, 2016 - Anchorage

August 9, 2016 When I started the blog of our trips 4 years ago, my intent was to record interesting facts about the trip that we would want to remember or thought were unusual. We have been so fascinated with Alaska and have learned so much that at the end of the day my usual stream of conscience writing misses lots of the fun things. I wake in the middle of the night remembering what I should have written. In the morning it is more adventures and no going back! Anchorage’s extensive trail system is one of the best in the country...

Aug 8, 2016 - Anchorage, AK

August 8, 2016 Today we have a 115 mile drive to Anchorage through the Alaskan Range along a variety of rivers and creeks that provide excellent fishing. We had overcast skies and intermittent rain but nice mountain vistas. We stopped in Wasilla (population 8,700) not because Sarah Palin was a 2 term mayor there. We wanted to visit the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters which was a bit west of town. We became fascinated with the dogs and mushers with our Denali dogsled visit. Dogsleds really opened the state in the early 1900’s when...

Aug 5, 2016 - Day 40 Anchorage

Day 40. Golden Nugget RV Park. Uneventful drive back to Anchorage. Got a much better campsite at this park this time. Not amongst the full timers. Dropped the trailer and went to pick up Karen and Wade where they had to return their motorhome. Then went downtown to dinner. We were told about the Glacier Brew Pub. Didn't have reservations, so we had an hour and a half wait. It was Friday night. Karen and I wandered around shopping. Had halibut which was very good, but salmon dip was not good. John and I split the dinner which was plenty. It...

Alaska...Again 2016

Jul 21, 2016 - Day 25 Anchorage, AK

Day 25. Still in Golden Nugget RV Park. Woke up to rain this AM. We were going to take the truck and trailer to the car wash. The stuff they put on the roads in the construction area to keep the dust down sticks like cement. Some spots have a half inch of the stuff. Could smell the smoke from the Seward Hwy fire. Went shopping at Fred Meyer. It's a Kroger store and like a super Wal Mart with clothes, bank, even a liquor store (though that was in a separate area). There was a hair salon next door, so I got my hair cut. Not the greatest, but...

Alaska...Again 2016

Jul 20, 2016 - Day 24 Anchorage, AK

Day 24. Golden Nugget RV Park. OK campground....for AK. A lot of full timers. Close sites, but level. Several people have planted a multitude of flowers. One even has a veggie garden. Today was a long, rough day. Between construction and bad roads what should have been a 6 hour drive turned into 8 hours. The road had the worst areas of frost heave we've come across. It's slower going with the trailer. As it was, we went into the trailer for lunch and found one of the cabinet doors had opened, spilling all sorts of bottles and cans onto the...

Alaska...Again 2016

Jul 20, 2016 - Tok to Anchorage

July 18th Not long after leaving in the morning we see another moose crossing the hwy in front of us. Now I am getting worried about hitting a moose on the hwy and sure enough later in the day we heard a report of exactly that happening. Also saw a Golden Eagle at very close range as it rose up from the brush beside the hwy and took off with something in its mouth. A very spectacular sight. This section of hwy was in terrible shape…worse than yesterday if that is possible. Tried to take some pictures to show how much the road had heaved in...

Jul 20, 2016 - To Anchorage to get truck

It's been 2 weeks to the day that we dropped off our truck at the GM Dealership in Anchorage, and it's now ready to pick up. It was actually done yesterday, but we already had our whole day booked, so we waited until today. We were up at 6:15, getting ready to go! We picked up the truck, and did some grocery shopping in Anchorage, then headed back down the peninsula to Seward. We hiked the Exit Glacier trails just out of Seward, it was very windy and the black flies on the trail (where the wind was blocked) were horrible! Not our most...

Alaska 2016

Jul 16, 2016 - Alaska: Crystal Serenity

Just after the summer solstice, Jim, Mary and I headed for Alaska to join a 7 day cruise on the Crystal Serenity. Outbound, we traveled for more than 18 hours (from our homes to landing at the Anchorage airport) on very long flights, none of which had internet or any entertainment, even in first class. Fortunately, we had decided to stay at the airport Marriott so it was a quick shuttle to our hotel, a light dinner and a hard bed! Black-out curtains mooted the 3:30 am sunrise so we slept in before a lazy morning and drive from Anchorage to...

Exploring The World

Jul 11, 2016 - Denali - "the High One"

Our 2 full days in Anchorage Day 1 - 500 mile round trip to Denali National Park. Can only drive 13 miles into the park without a park tour. Rainy up there. Visited Princess Wilderness Lodge next to park gate on our own without an extended Princess land tour from the ship. Day 2 - Drive south to Seward. 250 mile roundtrip with different scenery. Seward is a quaint seaside town with fishing, glacier and fjord tours. Wonderful crab cake lunch. We were able to see a moose-cow and calf on our way back into Anchorage. Tues. July 12 - time to...
