May 20, 2010 - Our first Munro

We said goodbye to Durness and headed east, towards Tongue, but veering south for a detour to Ben Hope. Once we got off the main road it started to feel really wild again, made even more special by the red deer stag who we passed in a field. He stayed for a while, we checked each other out, then he was gone. We also saw a Heilan Coo with a calf which was gorgeous - they are so fluffy when they are young. Aug 18, 2007 - Aberdeen to John o'Groats, Orkney Islands and Tongue.

We took a scenic route through the Cairngorm Mountains and had lunch at Tomintoul before moving on to the Cullodin battlefield site for a look around on our NZ National Trust cards. It was interesting learning about Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite movement but it was freezing cold, really windy. It rained most of the way from Inverness to John o'Groats so we kept going and it was latish when we arrived only to learn that the ferry hadn't sailed that day because of the weather.
