Our final castle of the day was Dunnattar Castle. Set high on a cliff over the North Sea, this castle has the best strategic position for a castle that we have seen. A fantastic setting out on rocks surrounded on all sides by steep cliffs, and on three sides by the North Sea. It was a well defended fortress. This site has had fortified forts since at least the 7th Century, maybe earlier. The oldest parts of the present castle date from the 13th century. It has been fought over many times. Jun 17, 2011 - Stonehaven

We found a hotel along the waterfront in Stonehaven. It was a little more money (£110) but the view was great and a good shower. The pub had good food, and no shortage of ale. The only thing was that there was a long steep set of stairs up to the room. Today was a bit of a marathon, lots of driving and many stops. We left our hotel in Huntly around 9:30 AM and got to our hotel in Stonehaven about 8:30 PM. We did see 7 castles and historical sites, and covered about 150 km (in about 3-4 hours driving).
