Aug 2, 2017 - More Castles and Palaces

Today we headed north to Perthshire and the city of Perth in the foothills of the highlands. We toured the Huntingtower Castle where Mary Queen of Scots stayed on 1525 and her son James VI was held against his will in 1582. From there it was on to Scone Palace, the original home of the Stone of Destiny, the stone upon which Scottish Kings are crowned. Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scotland at Scone in 1306 and the last coronation was of Charles II in 1651. The palace is steeped in Scottish history as it was the site of where the...

Jan 31, 2017 - Not much doing on a wet day

It has been a rather wet, lazy day. We rose to rain but it eased off after breakfast and I went to get a couple of things and Christine stayed in and read. After I returned the rain came on quite heavily. After lunch Christine went out in the rain to get some things while I did some puzzles. While Christine and Rob made dinner I did some packing. After dinner we watched a nature programme by David Attenborough which was very interesting, particularly when they showed you at the end how they had managed to capture some of the...

Jan 30, 2017 - Meeting Friends

The day looked bright when we went up for breakfast, but by the time we had eaten a fog had rolled in. Rob took us to the crematorium where the burial records are kept, despite the web site proclaiming the library as its depository. A very helpful but busy assistant found some of the information we wanted, which confirmed some ofd our suspicions, but left us with a large area of the cemetery to scour for Christine's other grandparents. We may do that tomorrow. We returned to Rob's and read till it was time o meet friends at a restaurant....

Jan 29, 2017 - A Couple of Walks into the Past

We enjoyed a better day today, with some sunshine. We had breakfast then Christine and I went to the cemetery to find some graves. We did find the stone of her paternal grandparents and aunt, but we hoped to find an adjacent grave with other names on it to try and piece together some of the information on the papers we had been looking at amongst the photos. Assuming the stone we found was on the lair we think it was, the adjacent one was empty. We do not know whether it has still to be filled or if the stone is missing. Christine continued...

Jan 28, 2017 - A Wet Day and More Relatives

We woke to a wet landscape and after breakfast we went and did some shopping. After lunch Rob took Christine to the cafe at the Black Watch Museum in Balhousie Castle where she met two cousin on her Mum's side - Edna and Irene. They had a nice time catching up, but unfortunately, Christine forgot her camera. Rob and I had a quiet afternoon, reading and talking. Christine came in - Edna had brought her home, still driving at 80 - and told us all the news from her cousins. After dinner we watched a couple of programmes Rob had recorded, one...

Jan 27, 2017 - Nearby Distant Relatives

We had breakfast and Christine wrote to our daughter. We then set off to the library where the web site told us the cemetery records were kept. It is a short walk and the weather was dry and brisk. The weather has been much better than we expected. The only real rain was on Sunday. Today started off with a mist, but in the city it had cleared by the time we went out. When we go to the library we were disappointed to find the information was somewhat limited and did not provide what we wanted. The lady suggested a couple of other places to...

Jan 26, 2017 - Around Perth

We were up and ready with Rob for breakfast this morning. At Christine's request he dug out the old photos he had inherited from his parents and we started to go through them and identify some old faces. This has been a visit of nostalgia, trying to relive the days of old. It has been very interesting having old times brought back to remembrance. We had lunch then went for a walk round town. We had a few items to get, but mainly it was a walk around the shopping area to relive our past. We strolled the streets and dropped into a few stores...

Jan 25, 2017 - On to Perth

We were up early this morning and I did most of my packing. We had breakfast and Christine packed while Nan and I settled on the final hotel for our trip and looked at car rentals. We got ready and packed the car then set off for Perth. We crossed the old Forth Road Bridge and looked over to the new Queensferry Crossing. It was not possible to get a photo from the car, although it was the best view we have had of it, partly due to the angle, and partly due to the sunny day we were experiencing. It was a contrast to the misty, damp day we...

Oct 2, 2015 - Scotland - Perth

We didn't want to leave too early this morning as we wanted to wait for the traffic to die down a bit , however we also knew we had quite a lot of driving in front of us - approx 6 hours. So we started off just before 9.00am - Jeremy was working fine this morning - our little chat last night sounds like it worked...... Again a foggy day - but looks like it will be lovely when it clears. It is quite a flat area around here. We ended up back on the Motorway - and it go a bit boring - so we saw this turnoff to Lanark - and thought lets check...

Aug 19, 2015 - Perth

We had a relatively quiet day today We went into town and looked again at the suitcase we had seen and did a few other things. I decided to weight the case I had to compare it with the one we had seen. We had lunch and I went back to the store to get the case as it was, in fact, lighter than the broken one. As I went down High Street I heard the sound of bagpipes, and sure enough, there was a piper regaling the shoppers. I got the case and went back and we went for a run round by Scone, stopping there to put flowers on Christine's parents'...

Aug 18, 2015 - Shopping?

Yesterday we had watched a small bus load up with some of the residents from Rob's building and set off for a n outlet mall at Tillicoultry. Christine was interested on two accounts - it was a place she had not been to for many years and...it involved shopping! Today after breakfast Rob took us via some scenic backroads to Tillicoultry and the mall. We wandered round the stores and bought very little. It was quite interesting and there were some real bargains, but nothing we needed. Rob took us across the road to a large furniture store. I...

Aug 17, 2015 - Points West

We rose to sunshine this morning and after breakfast we set off for Callander via Dunblane and Doune. We took a back road through Dunning and other small towns on the way, rejoining the main road near Auchterarder which is close to Gleneagles, famed for its golf course. We arrived in Callander and parked by the River Tieth then walked around the town. We stopped at a restaurant above a store and had lunch. It was quiet when we arrived but it suddenly filled up due, we later learned, to the arrival of three bus parties. We walked back to the...
