Along the rugged northeast coast of Scotland the names develop a tough Viking sound: Badbea, Brora and Ulbster. Helmsdale seems a good example, with one cheek blasted by the North Sea and the other backed by heather-patched moors.It comes as something of a surprise to hear that the flouncy, late romantic novelist Barbara Cartland holidayed in the rugged environs up here. Cartland's life and novels were equally flamboyant, and she was notorious for her fetishistic love of the colour pink - apparently unable to sleep unless she was entirely...
