14.8 Miles from Thirsk to Boltby Todays destination was to a visitors centre at Sutton where Brigantes suggested I arrange transport to nearby Boltby with the owner for my overnight stay.However as the distance there was only estimated to be about 10 miles, a half days walk, I decided to plan a route directly to my overnight accommodation. After returning the boat we set off to go to Burn Bridge, a village near Harrrogate where I lived before emigrating to Australia, and visited a couple of old friends of the family. Had a great catch up and cuppa and then went to do some exploring. I took Tony to my old school - which is no longer a school, and a new one has been built down the road a bit. Then on to Knaresborough to check out the beautiful bridge structure which I have always remembered. After lunch we went on to try and find the Druid Temple ruins at Masham!! There are...

Jun 11, 2008 - Thirsk- Town of James Harriot

Thirst is about 23 miles northwest of York. It's a quiet short drive to this lovely little town of the famed James Harriot tales. I came here specifically to see the James Harriot museum which is housed in the original Skelsdale house from his famed books- All Creatures Great and Small, and so many more. His son also became a veterinary surgeon and worked in a neighboring town until he retired. He watchs over and narrates the James Harriot museum and all it's holdings. His sister, Rosie, became a doctor in Thirsk and is now retired also. As...
