Jul 11, 2015 - Sunderland walks - Penshaw Monument and Seaham

July 11 Up early, Gary and I had breakfast after Joyce and Chris who had already eaten. After breakfast, Chris drove us to Penshaw Monument where we went for a walk up to the monument, and then on to Silksworth Hill for a short walk before picking up some groceries for lunch. We returned to their place for lunch. After lunch, we watched a bit of the women's final from Wimbledon and recorded the rest while we went out again for a longer walk at Seaham area, up Hawthorn Dene and along a coastal footpath. It was a good long walk. On our...

Jul 10, 2015 - Harrogate to Sunderland via Fountains Abbey

July 10 After a typically English breakfast, we checked out of the hotel around 9:00 a.m. Our first stop was back in Harrogate town centre, where we walked around and did a bit of shopping. We then drove to Fountains Abbey where we spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon. It was another lovely day and we walked around the Abbey ruins and the water gardens, after which we enjoyed a cold drink and a piece of cake before returning to the car. Fountains Abbey had been one of the biggest Cistercian monasteries in England before it was...

Apr 11, 2014 - Around Sunderland and meeting Bede Grammar School friends

Friday April 11 We woke quite early and ate breakfast with Joyce and Chris. After breakfast, we went out for a walk around Sunderland. We first walked through Mowbray Park which was really colourful with flower beds full of primulas and hyacinths. We continued through to the main shopping area, checking in at a computer store in an attempt to purchase a SC card reader for the iPad (no luck!). After wandering through Bridges Mall and back onto the high street, we walked over the bridge and down to a recreational walkway along the River Wear...

Apr 10, 2014 - Finding Jay and driving north to Sunderland

Thursday April 10 Heather called Cath Harris early in the morning to work out how to get together with Jay Appleton and her for an early lunch. With the help of Richard Appleton (Jay's son), Heather managed to determine that Jay was not at his bungalow, but rather in a local rehabilitation centre presumably getting assistance with his mobility issues. For several reasons (preparing for a visitor from New Zealand and dealing with some tradesmen at her house) Cath had to back out of any get together. We did, however, arrange to visit with...

Feb 14, 2012 - My new love for England

After the first few days of absolutely hating it here and counting the days till I go home, the culture shock wore off and I am now completely in love with this place. I was talking to a friend the other day about Winona and when I come back and I honestly kind of cringed thinking about it. Dont get me wrong, I will be beyond excited to come home and see my family and friends again and be in my own house and what not, but I have met such amazing people here and already have so many great memories here that I know these next few months will...

Feb 8, 2012 - A little relaxing by the beach... kinda

Every day here feels like it flies by I have come to realize. I feel like Im constantly doing something, which is great but also exhausting. Today I had class at 9am, in Winona if I had 9am class I would wake up at 830, grab some cereal quick and run out the door and make it to my class no problem. Here, I have to be up at like 7- usually 720 because I reset my alarm multiple times, because I have to catch the bus at 8:15 and it takes about 40 minutes to get to the St. Peters campus. The campus is really only about 2.5 miles from my dorm,...

Jan 31, 2012 - Orientation

Sorry sorry sorry for not writing anything really until now. The past few days have been a total blur. We arrived at the airport very early in the morning on Sunday and two guys from the school picked up a big group of us and took us to our flats. I have met my 7 other flatmates, many of them from Germany and a few from the US. All very nice people. We had a full day of orientation on Monday which included a visit with my adviser, an introduction to the campus and a social that evening at like a restaurant/ bar downtown. Its been great...
