Aug 25, 2008 - England (3 Wixford Road - Shirley)

We were going to go out with Aunty Pat and Uncle Jim. We are nearing the end of our stay here and would like to go and have another look around Solihull Shopping Centre. Unfortunately Aunty Pat started feeling unwell so Uncle Jim, Rowena and I piled into Uncle Jim’s car and headed off. Breakfast and all that had been the same as all the other mornings and not worth more than this note. The internet and other small chores took us up to where we are above, on the way to the shops. We park up and off we wander around the shopping area. First...

Aug 24, 2008 - England (3 Wixford Road - Shirley)

It rained again overnight but the new roof seems to be handling it well and Uncle Jim is pleased. It feels nice to, in some way, repay the kindness of their putting us up and disturbing their life as we have done. We have been invited to my Aunt Joan’s place for lunch today. That kicks off at 2pm. Auntie Joan has spent a number of years collating and collecting a family tree. This is a good opportunity to find out about where I fit into the mix. My cousin Debbie and her husband arrived at about 11. Another opportunity to learn about what...

Aug 23, 2008 - England (3 Wixford Road - Shirley)

An early start sees breakfast all over and done with by the time that family start to arrive to help with replacing the conservatory roof. The rest of the day consists of pulling the old plastic covers off the roof and replacing them with the new sheets and rubber seals. Uncle Jim is really pleased with the progress and, amazingly, the sun shines the entire time. The job is finished by 3:30 in the afternoon and we are all sitting down to a drink by 4pm. Shortly after that the rains starts, and it is a good downpour. A good test for the new...

Day starts with breakfast as usual and a bit of a natter with the family. Today I think we will head into Birmingham Centre and have a look around. This will be the only chance really as I think the weekend will be tied up with replacing Uncle Jim’s conservatory roof and seeing visiting family. We have been told that the best way into the centre is by train so off we head towards Shirley Railway Station. Uncle Jim has advised that it is better to go to Solihull Station, but Shirley is closer. Ah! Shirley Station has very limited car...

Aug 20, 2008 - England (3 Wixford Road - Shirley)

My Dad has often spoken of the Black Country Museum. This is an area in Birmingham that has been returned to how it looked from early 1900. One can purchase old money and buy things that can no longer be bought through mainstream shopping. So today we will head out thereto take a look. Breakfast done and chores completed we jump into Uncle Jim’s car and off we go. To get there we have to drive completely across Birmingham. Uncle Jim well knows the way and having the opportunity to sit in the vehicle without the burden of having to drive I...

Today we will make a surprise visit to my Cousin Stephanie’s place. As I have mentioned it has been 38 years since I have seen any of these people, and I am always a little apprehensive about meeting them. Stephanie’s place is a five minute drive away. She has been living here for many years. The place itself is well over 70 years old, but quite a lot of renovation has been done to it. It is one house in a row of attached houses that is very typical of housing here in Shirley, well in much of the UK actually. We knock on the front door and...

Aug 18, 2008 - England (3 Wixford Road - Shirley)

Today we will head out and about to Solihull to have a look around there. Auntie Pat needs to go to the hospital at Solihull for a while, so we will drop her off and head into Solihull shops. The Solihull memories that I want to realise are the area around where Sainsburys was. Sainsburys is a large supermarket where Mum used to work. The memory is playing in a large fountain and pool outside Sainsburys whilst Mum and Dad did their shopping. I also have vivid memories of sitting in the staff room area of Sainsburys looking down onto the...

Aug 16, 2008 - England (Days Inn Motel – Warwick to 3 Wixford Road - Shirley)

Breakfast was again delivered to the room, nice continental style again, and served with a smile. All packed and ready to go we head out to the car. The short distance to Shirley only takes about 15 minutes. In fact finding Uncle Jim’s place takes longer. Finally we do our old trick of buying a local map and working from that. The map bought, the route noted and we are there in less than 10 minutes. My Uncle Jim is my Dad’s older brother. His house is an ex Council House that he has lived in (or so we discover) for some 53 years, and he...
