Angela here.... I believe it was Glen Campbell who penned that wonderful song about the wee Scottish village of Garlieston. What was it he said? "Garlieston, oh Garlieston, I still hear your sea waves crashing, While I watch the cannons flashing, I clean my gun and dream of Garlieston". Yes, ok, maybe not. Texas it isn't, but Garlieston still has a lot to recommend it. Driving through the south of Scotland it seems to me that some burghs give a bad first impression. Take the port town I drove into a few days ago. Driving into town my car kept pace with a red-haired kid on a scrappy BMX. I gave her my cheeriest 'I'm not from England' wave. She looked quizzically up and down my car before giving me the finger and darting off down a back alley to play with some matches. And who could blame her?
