Nov 24, 2005 - September 14th, 2004: Alnwick and Warkworth Castle

September 14th, 2004 we drove to visit the ruins of Warkworth Castle in a small village on the River Coquet south of Alnwick (pronounced AN-NICK, population about 7,000). Warkworth Castle was an empty castle in ruins, no furnishings, no one living on site. Other castles that we had visited were living estates. This was very much like the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey: stones and more stones. However, we did feel history come alive when we walked the grounds and through the Castle Keep.
