Feb 13, 2020 - Storm Ciera to be followed by Dennis the Menace!!!!

Last weekend we had storm Ciera - very strong winds caused trees to fall, this tree fell on a couple of boats. It didn't do much damage but enoughn to make everyone worry about the rest of the trees. The CRT cut up the trees and then the fight over the firewood began - those with wood burning fires all vying for it. The daffodils are starting to flower now, so it's going to look very pretty soon. Here's another of the 7 Wiltshire White horses- this one looks a bit pale, needs re chalking. The CRT are doing works on the pumping station...

Feb 9, 2020 - Storms

We have Storm Ciara lashing Britain at present and we are being blown by a 50+kmh wind. It started during the night and is set to continue until midnight tonight. This has been set up at the cemetery gates just up from our mooring for over a week. Safety on top of safety!!! The crocus are popping up all around the town and the blossom has just started to open up on the trees. The wind might blow it all off though, so it will be interesting to see what it looks like tomorrow. ...

Feb 2, 2020 - Time flies!!!

This time last year we had frost, ice and snow. We were transported from Newark to Reading on the coldest 2 days of the winter! This weekend has been the exact opposite - lovely sunny day yesterday, then it rained overnight and is overcast but not cold today. Another jigsaw completed. We've wandered through the old Cheese market here many times and it wasn't until the other day that we noticed this sign with the rules and regulations from when it actually was a cheese market. These days it is more a trash and treasure market 4 days a...

Jan 26, 2020 - Happy Australia Day

Our Australia Day was just a tad cooler than we would have liked!!!! Tony barbequed in the light drizzle much to the delight of passers by!! Julie and Nick (and their son, Matt) brought the steaks I sort of made the pav (just filled a purchased base!) but it was delicious all the same. Tony had fun blowing up balloons and tying up the flags in the breeze. We had 6 friends here from other boats to help us celebrate. It was a great afternoon, evening, with lots of laughs. Hope you all had a great day too.

Jan 23, 2020 - Wide water 51.344419 -1.8139542

A couple of the bridges we went through today. I don't usually think about taking photos as we're too concerned about making sure we fit through ok. But we've been through these bridges a couple of times now and we know we can get through as long as we take it slowly and carefully. We left Pewsey and are moored between there and Honeystreet at Wide Water. It's very peaceful. Every now and then we come across places where there used to be a swing bridge - they've taken away the bridge in some cases but we still have to negotiate the narrow...

Jan 20, 2020 - Iced In

We woke up to an iced canal this morning, it was a bit chilly to say the least. A boat went munching through around 10.30am and broke it up and then the sun came out and melted it. It's been an absolutely beautiful day. There was still some ice hanging around in the shadows as we moved along. We are tied up near a small village called Wilcot, near Pewsey. We walked into Pewsey this afternoon just to see if by any chance there is somewhere to moor up. That's a big NO of course....

Jan 18, 2020 - A bit of a walk

A frosty morning and the frost still hasn't melted away by 2pm in places. We walked back in the direction of Devizes to get to the store at All Cannings - yesterday when we came past the moorings there was no room and today there is room for 2 boats!!!! Murphy's Law!! We tried to take a short cut on our return but after going across this field the next paddock had been inhabited by cows and was so boggy from their sloshing around in the mud that it was almost impossible to walk on - thank goodness for wellies! This lovely clump of...

Jan 17, 2020 - Back to Honeystreet

We made our way back to Honeystreet today between rain showers and wind. Of course it stopped both raining and blowing by the time we moored up!!! We followed this beautiful Kingfisher for quite a way, his lovely blue flashing along the canal. This narrow boat is as full on the inside as it is on the outside - don't know how they even move about in it! This is the view of the white horse from our mooring. We'll stay here a few days until we get fed up of the dreadful sloppy jalopi towpath!!!!

Jan 14, 2020 - What is it?

walking along the tow path today we spotted these black balls. Most had holes in them which looked like they had been pecked. I brought a couple back and opened them up - one had a small creature similar to a centipede, but whether it is something that came from the pod or just something that found shelter there I don't know. So if any one out there has any ideas we would be interested to hear them. We've had some pretty nasty gusty winds and rain over the last few days, will be glad when that's over....

Jan 10, 2020 - Still no snow!

Anther lovely day today - these are a few of the pics I took on our wander along the sloshy tow path. Very muddy in some places, just as well we had wellies on. There was mountains of snow forcast for this week but it hasn't eventuated, it's been very mild. Maybe when it eventually does snow it will be "horrendous"! Haha.

Jan 9, 2020 - Rowdy Rooks

We're back at the Bridge Inn, with Bishops Cannings on the left of the canal and Horton on the right. Today was bright sunshine for the morning and then it turned miserable and rained around 2pm. We managed to go for a walk before it started to rain, and it was quite warm. These rooks are right above our boat and are quite noisy first thing in the morning. The daffodils are already starting to come through, won't be long before they're flowering!! This is the thatch we looked at last November when we were here, and this is it today. So...

Jan 6, 2020 - Dull and dreary

Our walk around the village pond with a wander through the grave yard of St.James' church. The churches are only open at certain times and we seem to miss it when we are out and about. Yesterday was our 46th Wedding Anniversary and we had a lovely day with a very nice dinner with our friends Nick and Julie from the boat in front of us. Nick has been helping Tony to get the new battery system operating correctly. It's now raining so we were lucky to get our grocery shopping done this morning before it started. We have supplied up ready to...
