Sep 11, 2019 - Last day on the Grand Union

While we were in Brentford township the other day we decided to have a look at the Church. Very disappointing as it's very modern and open plan inside. They've kept the facade and the tower and the rest has been rebuilt. We're moored opposite the Glaxo, Smith, Kline building and next to that is Boston Manor Park, so we had a walk through there today. It's a large park with lots of walking paths and some nice colourful gardens and a large play area for children. And of course the obligatory squirrels!!!! Tomorrow we will be departing...

Sep 7, 2019 - Back cruising

Our plane for the first part of our journey back to the UK. Departing Brisbane at lunchtime on Wednesday after 3 days visiting Jane on Bribie Island, we had a short stop in Cairns and then on to Hong Kong where we had a 5 hour stopover and a change of planes. The sun was rising as we flew into Manchester airport at 6.15am on Thursday morning. Back in the land of the Wind Farms!! We found somewhere to have a shower and then picked up our rental car and proceeded to Huddersfield to see Marjorie and collect our mail. Then we went to find...

Mar 23, 2019 - Out for a walk

While out for our walk we came across a small flock of these parakeet. Apparently they are called feral parakeets as they have bred from birds that have escaped back yard aviaries. We went past the old EMI building - a large area of 17 acres is now called the Old Vinyl Factory. It was built originally in 1907 as headquarters of EMI and His Masters Voice. It has now been turned into, homes, offices and commercial space....

Mar 21, 2019 - Mind the gap!

We caught the train into Paddington yesterday for a bit of sightseeing. This part of the canal is chockers, so no room to moor here! And this tunnel is far to small for us to get through. Marble Arch, just across from Hyde Park. Walked down the edge of Hyde Park and across to Buck Palace. Through St. James' Park Then down towards the river. Big Ben is still under maintenance. Then along the river to Tower Bridge From there we caught the underground back to Paddington and the train back here. Arriving back at the boat...

Mar 19, 2019 - 51 30'13.212N 0 25'2.82W Hayes Town

Yesterday we only had a short trip to get water and groceries. We got through the first bridge with no worries, but had to stop to take the wheel house down before the next one. As we were waiting for the water tank to fill this very long item came through the bridge opposite us. He had a bit of trouble trying to manoeuvre it around the bend, but Tony got the boat hook out and pushed it in the right direction away from us. Once we were filled up we set off for our night mooring at Hayes Town, not very far away. We will wait here for a...

Mar 17, 2019 - Up the canal a bit

We awoke to bright skies and sunshine so we took down the wheel house in preparation for the low bridges and set off. 10 locks, 2 stops to clean the filters because the water was low due to previous boats using the locks and to unclog the prop which was tied up with bags, cloths and other rubbish and 5 hours later. We had a light shower just after the last lock and then we just managed to tie up and get the wheel house back together before it poured down and we had a hail storm. We'll both be feeling the aches and pains tomorrow after...

Mar 16, 2019 - Still at Brentford

Quite an unpleasant week - the weather has been pretty horrible, strong, gusty winds and rain and hail on and off, and Tony had a nasty tummy bug for 3 days. So with the wind still blowing, but no rain today we set off to walk to the Museum of Water & Steam. We walked along the Thames bank - the tide was out. This beautiful tree is a magnificent magnolia. Lots of historical people here. Just a few pics around the museum which was interesting. Not a free entry this time though. Hopefully tomorrow will be sunny...

Mar 6, 2019 - The Grand Union Canal

We had to find another casualty department this morning as Tony's wound has opened up a bit and is very sore. They re dressed it and told him to keep his feet up! Not much chance of that today, but we're going to have a couple of rest days after the last 10 days so he can put his feet up then. We went through the Teddington lock at high tide, 2.45 PM, and made our way down river to Brentford where the Grand Union starts. We had to negotiate our way through all these floating houses. Once inside the canal the first bridge we came to...
