Jun 26, 2013 - Southport

I had no expectaions as to what Southport would be like. I wasn’t going there for any touristy reason. So I was surprised. It obviously had been a tourist destination for the rich and famous at some time in its history. The main street, like the Champs Elysees (the locals say that latter copied their wide boulevards.) Road in the centre, then an avenue of trees on each side, behind the trees, wide promenades. It’s a mile long, so people took their constitutionals, walking the length and back again. The buildings are ornate and older...

Jun 24, 2013 - Lathom: lathams of Lathom?

Off to Southport, but more of that later. The reason for this detour was the meeting with the family. Its a convoluted story but accidently, in looking for information for a couple of my children re their family in England I came across Nick, who turned out to be an uncle; their fathers half brother that he didnt know he had. SO suddenly they had some extra relatives. (they already had lots on my side, so why not a bit of balance?) It took me some time to track Michael down in Perth and during that time Nick and I exchanged quite a few...

Popped into see Katherine who was working in the bank (banks are open on Saturday's), a coffee with Phil then it was home for a quick bite to eat and then off to Anne Fitz's place at Crosby. Started the day at Dobbies Gardening World..........not just your averge garden centre, this centre had the lot, it even had a gourmet deli/wine section. Here we had coffee with John (Grandad's brother/John's Fitz's dad), Pat (Grandad's sister) and Anne (John's daughter). After morning tea Dan wandered through the landscape supplies checking out the slate and pebbles. Back home for lunch, a bit of Wimbledon watching then it was into Southport for a walk along the pier, a pier with no water underneath! Although it must have once as 'red swim...

Jun 30, 2011 - Preston / Penwortham / Birkdale

Started the day with booking of flights and accommodation to Paris for 3 days, departing Saturday 23 July. With Dan behind the wheel of Nana's car we make our way to Joan Healy's place, a good family friend of Dan's parents. Joan played the organ in Tony and Helen's wedding, we think she also did the order of service. It was then onto Preston shopping centre for a cuppa with Uncle Damian (Helen's brother). We then stopped at Damian's lovely house for lunch where we met Pauline (Damian's wife) Amy and Beth (daughters). After lunch we visited...

Jun 29, 2011 - Liverpool

Morning spent doing the laundry. Caught the train to Halls Road station where we were met by Tony, Nana's brother. Tony drove us to Anfield Stadium, home of Liverpool Football Club for a look and then into Liverpool CBD. Had a look inside the modern looking Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral. It was then onto Everyman Bistro and Bar for lunch. It was then onto the City Sightseeing Hop On-Hop Off bus for an easy, quick and lazy look around. We hoped off at the docks on the River Mersey for a wander around the Maritime Museum, which featured...

We started the day with a tour of the Old Jameson Whiskey Distillery, learning about the making of John Jameson's Irish Whiskey through to the different stages, including grain intake, malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation, maturation and bottling. We finished the tour with Dan taking part in a taste test between Jameson, Johnny Walker and Jack Daniels, comparing the best whiskey, Dan of course picking Jameson. We also got a free glass of Jameson with various mixes, Leah now loving whiskey with cranberry juice. It was then back to...

The weekend was off to a lively start with the stage show of Calendar Girls in Liverpool. There were excellent performers and highly humours. A very nice way to get to know my workmates- there were 14 of us ladies that showed up. Oh I will miss the theatre when I return. Saturday night saw the arrival of a Pat Ave work mate, Helen. We drove to Southport for a music and fireworks competition. It was well organised and a great idea to include a wide variety of music. Unfortunately the rain came down after the first group so we didn’t stay as...

May 3, 2009 - We Arrived!

We arrived in Southport today after a long journey. We flew from Vancouver, stopped over in Toronto and Heathrow, finally arriving in Manchester. We then picked up our rental car at the airport and drove about 1hour to Southport. This was our first driving experience in England and it was a bit frightening!
