This place takes orphaned and injured elephants and tries to return them to the wild. The wild is a...

Apr 8, 2017 - Family get together

Linda (Tony’s sister) had organised a family get together to celebrate her 60th birthday and Joseph’s 1st birthday on the 13 April. All the family was there except Tony’s elder brother Donald. Tony found it very strange being the most senior there! It was a lovely day. A great buffet lunch and then a walk down to the coast before all ending up at Linda and Kevin’s.

Apr 5, 2017 - South Downs Way walk

We had moved south to near Southampton for a family get together to celebrate our grandson Joseph first birthday and Linda (Tony’s sister) 60th birthday. We had few days of enjoying the area before the “do” which involved a lovely walk on the South Downs Way across Old Winchester Hill. It was a great walk with great views.

May 8, 2016 - Caribbean Princess Day 1

Today, we boarded the Caribbean Princess. After a day of craziness in getting to the UK and then to Southampton, we took things easy, slept until about 10:00 a.m. We breakfasted at the hotel. The hotel told us they would call a cab to get us to the docks. They did not tell us they would pay for it, so when we arrived and the cabbie turned down our money, we were more than surprised. Getting on the boat was a bit of a challenge. The cabbie took us to a cruise ship--one with a big X on the side. Now, I'm no veteran at cruising, but I was...

Jan 12, 2016 - Made it across the Bay of Biscay

We have just crossed a very stormy wild Bay of Biscay and both felt OK although all the outside deck and swimming pools have been close. We spent yesterday staggering around the ship trying to find our way round, listening to the guest lecturer (Bill Bryson who was very funny) and doing a bit of dancing.... although that was a bit of a joke on the unstable floor! Everyone kept ending up in one area of the floor as it tipped up a little and then it felt as if you were dancing up hill and then down hill again. The food and service has been...

Jan 10, 2016 - All aboard the Queen Elizabeth safely

We had a successful trip down from Leeds in the coach without mishap although a very early start in pouring rain and arriving in rain too. The journey down however was mostly in sunshine once the sunrose and we have settled in well to our cabin for the next 37 days. All three round the world cunard cruise liners left together to a firework display but we had to miss that as we were due in for dinner at 6 pm and everything got late. It was still quite a sight seeing all the liners together in the cruise dock.

Sep 6, 2015 - Southampton, England

We had a very long day, we drove from Saltmills to Dublin to the airport. We flew to Southampton, England and took a taxi to the cruise port. We are now on the incredible Royal Princess ship, ready to relax. The Royal Princess is a new ship, only about two years old, it is beautiful. After we got all our luggage delivered to the room, we had a buffet lunch in Horizon Court. We have been on a lot of cruises but this buffet had more food than I have ever seen on any ship, so much to choose from. We have been to most of the ports on the cruise...

Jun 14, 2015 - Southampton England

On our walkabout we did pass Castle Gate. The remains of the drum towers flanking the principal gateway to Southampton's medieval castle were discovered through archaeological excavations in 1961. The castle itself formerly stood on the site now occupied by a 20th century block of twelve storey flats. The twin drum towers, now partially restored, were added to the defensive bailey wall of the royal castle during the late 14th century and were originally over 20 feet high. We did find the Platform Tavern we were looking for on our way to the...

Oct 15, 2014 - board the Oasis

When I looked up what there was to see and do in Southampton, the major event was the arrival of the Oasis of the Seas. Locals were invited to Mayflower Park to see it docked and get free coffee and bacon sandwiches. We had no idea where Mayflower Park was, but did have a general idea which direction the ocean was from our hotel and started walking. By the time we got to the pedestrian mall, we could see the ship looming over the IKEA. It is taller than nearly all the buildings in Southampton. We kept walking and finally there it was. We...

Oct 14, 2014 - ready to sail

Those younger, less loaded down and more energetic than we, would have traveled from London to Southampton by train. When we cruise, we bring an extra suitcase which we have barely opened thus far. A four block walk to the Tube station, many stairs and escalators to the subway train, reverse the process at the rail station, and getting to our hotel here - a real ordeal, especially when it is still rainy. Instead a wonderful man showed up at our door, picked us up with our bags, and brought us directly to the Southampton hotel. All you need...

Jul 10, 2014 - Disembark the Ruby Princess - Windsor Castle

Princess really knows how to manage crowds! The disembarkation was well organized, we promptly found our luggage and on the transfer bus back to Heathrow on schedule. We took a taxi to Windsor Castle after we checked in to the hotel. What a beautiful place and the tour through the state apartments was unbelievable. It is certainly a museum in itself with the art, sculpture, tapestries, china collections and antiquities. Loved it! Photographs are not allowed inside the state apartments so bought the souvenir guide instead! St. George's Hall...

Jun 28, 2014 - Board the Ruby Princess

Managed to get back to Heathrow and probably only waited 15 minutes to get on the bus to the Ocean Terminal in Southampton. Driver took us through the towns of Winchester (didn't get a picture of the cathedral - wrong side of the bus!) and Southampton. Ruby Princess is HUGE...much larger than the Island Princess we've been on before. Will post pictures later since taken with the iPhone from the bus and not camera...being selective with the Wi-Fi minutes we purchased to use on the ship! Assuming we will find hot spots around the ports to...
