Jul 7, 2018 - Cruising

Dear all, Well here we are again. We have had a week in England, not doing anything exciting except watching Kate, our niece run in a 10 Klm fun run for cancer. It was really hot on the day and has remained so. Yesterday it was 30'C and today it is to get to 32'C. We are off to Southampton tomorrow for our cruise to the Canary Islands. I am not sure how I will go with the blog as we cannot get internet on the ship. The islands are off the west coast of Africa, off Monarco. I have tried to set up the map for you. Well that is all for...

Our Big Trip

May 13, 2018 - Changing ships

Thursday 10 May, Cruise Day 5 Thursday morning was spent sailing in to Lisbon, great with lots of scenery on both sides of the ship. We arrived in Lisbon about 11 am and we spent the next few hours exploring the city. Lots of winding laneways and little squares. And naturally many churches! The city was very busy with the finals of Eurovision, plus there were three cruise ships in town for the day. But unlike Spain and Italy, the Portuguese don’t go to sleep for the afternoon so everything remained open throughout our stay. Eurovision...

Jun 9, 2017 - Guernsey and the trip to Southampton

Have uploaded photos and hope to do some writing after dinner. Lovely dinner overlooking the water and warm enough for our coffee outside on the terrace. Locals tell us it might be the only chance in a year! Guernsey had to be a hurried visit to fit in as much as possible in the one day after our stranding in Jersay. First stop the Little Chapel started in 1914 by a De La Salle brother after a trip to Lourdes. The current Chapel is the third attempt on the site and its most interesting feature is the mosaics made initially using the broken...

Honkers & England

Jun 4, 2017 - Yesterday

I have been having trouble with my Tablet battery lately so it was flat as a tack yesterday and I couldn't update. We went to New Forest and had a look around. The tide was out when we went to this little harbour! We went to a place called "Buckler's Hard" which was once a hive of shipbuilding activity on the Beaulieu Ri er, providing ships for Nelson's Navy. There is a fantastic Maritime Museum there and some of the old cottages. The road runs through the New Forest and as we were driving back to go to our hotel the horses that roam...

Honkers & England

Jun 2, 2017 - Good morning from Southampton UK

Good morning from Southampton, England. Had a great flight from home, long and tiring but very comfortable thanks to Westjets Plus option. Comfy Bistro type hotel in Southampton after a 2 hr drive from Gatwick airport. Our driver and car were waiting at the airport as scheduled, turned out to be a great option rather than catching a train !!! Wandered about the town for a couple of hours, did a bit of shopping and sightseeing before relaxing for a quick dinner at a neighbourhood Italian Restaurant. Started our dinner outside at their...

May 15, 2017 - Home sweet home

It's over a week since we returned to Southampton and back to normal life! We had a fabulous time and met lots of interesting people. We have been asked what was our favourite place. It's impossible to answer, there are many ports we enjoyed. The Amazon was a real highlight, having studied it in geography lessons then to experience the vastness of the of the flowing waterway through the verdant, gigantic forests was beyond my dreams. Visiting the iconic structures such as Christ The Redeemer, Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Prison was...

Apr 26, 2017 - Southampton

Southampton is a short hop across the English Channel. Our tours here are Stonehenge and the Salisbury Cathedral. I have read so much about Stonehenge that I just had to see it. Many people would dismiss it as just a pile of stones. Since it predates written history, understanding it requires a lot of educated guessing. I think we don't give these ancestors enough credit. After all they moved these stones, weighing over a hundred tons, miles to this site. A fete similar to the construction of the pyramids in Egypt. We ate lunch at a tavern...

Apr 8, 2017 - Family get together

Linda (Tony’s sister) had organised a family get together to celebrate her 60th birthday and Joseph’s 1st birthday on the 13 April. All the family was there except Tony’s elder brother Donald. Tony found it very strange being the most senior there! It was a lovely day. A great buffet lunch and then a walk down to the coast before all ending up at Linda and Kevin’s.

Apr 5, 2017 - South Downs Way walk

We had moved south to near Southampton for a family get together to celebrate our grandson Joseph first birthday and Linda (Tony’s sister) 60th birthday. We had few days of enjoying the area before the “do” which involved a lovely walk on the South Downs Way across Old Winchester Hill. It was a great walk with great views.

May 8, 2016 - Caribbean Princess Day 1

Today, we boarded the Caribbean Princess. After a day of craziness in getting to the UK and then to Southampton, we took things easy, slept until about 10:00 a.m. We breakfasted at the hotel. The hotel told us they would call a cab to get us to the docks. They did not tell us they would pay for it, so when we arrived and the cabbie turned down our money, we were more than surprised. Getting on the boat was a bit of a challenge. The cabbie took us to a cruise ship--one with a big X on the side. Now, I'm no veteran at cruising, but I was...
