May 13, 2016 - The Cotswolds

Heading up to Statford on Avon today to checkout The Bard's homeplace. Got side tracked (lost) for awhile and spent sometime and Chipping Campden and the Hidcote Gardens. Loved Statford on Avon, big town, think all the rich locals must shop there. Reasonably restful day today before we get back on the road.

May 12, 2016 - The Cotswolds

Really pissed off this morning. It's our first fine day. Blue skies, no rain or wind, temps late teens and we are stuck in our room trying to sort this mess. By lunch time we have a plan but not everything in place but we head out. Off to Bourton on the water. The Venice of the Cotswolds. It was very pretty but we had to laugh, everyone was out in their summer clothes buying ice-creams. Then headed to Batsford Aboretum and Gardens, this home dates back to the 17th century. The very grand castle and fantastic acres. Dinner back in Broadway...

May 11, 2016 - The Cotswolds

Decided to take the scenic route from Cardigan to The Colswolds and detoured via St Davids, westernmost point on Penbrokeshire coast and apparently, officially the smallest town in Wales. Turned out to be a busy spot for all kinds of out door activities. Which, by the way is the case everywhere here, the weather doesn't stop them. Arrived in a small town called Broadway, in the Cotwolds and found our accommodation. We're staying in the Stables on Farncombe Estate. Quite a contrast here from the harsh scenery we've been through. Very plush...

Oct 14, 2015 - Cotswolds: Winchcombe to Broadway

Day 2 of our Cotswold adventure and we had to decide whether to trek 11 miles or 9. We decided to go the shorter way and what a good decision it turned out to be as it meant we could dawdle at Haile Abbey, but more about that later. After making our way thru Winchcombe by following directions such as “Turn left following the path between some properties to a KG (kissing gate) and enter the field. Continue straight ahead along the stone path over two footbridges following the River Isbourne to a KG at the far end. Cross the road and turn...

May 11, 2012 - Cotswolds still a fab place to visit

A long but very pleasant day journeying through the Cotswolds today. Starting at Minster Lovell and Burford before heading to Northleach for a surprisingly good pub lunch (initially place a bit off putting, mainly due to some dodgy looking clientelle out the front) and then Bourton-on- water, the Slaughters and a few lovely places more. Favourite place was probably Broadway but needs more of an explore as reached there only at the end of the day. The sandstone here was a very rich colour with the main street leading up into the lovely and...

Oct 1, 2010 - Back to Blockley

This is the last entry in my travel blog for this trip. I am making my way back to Blockley for a final few days of Cotswold walks, then to London (well, a suburb close to Heathrow) to spend my last evening with friends, and home on October 7. This trip has been a mixture of hard work and fun. My favourite stops have been ….. all of them! It’s hard to pick out 1 or even 2 or 3 as they have all had their high points. I was particularly excited to experience Alsace and find out about my Groshens ancestors, and to spend time with my new...
