Jan 9, 2013 - Hengistbury Head

We all need a good walk so today we headed to Hengistbury Head a headland east of Bournemouth whose spit creates the narrow entrance to Christchurch Harbour. The spit has quite a history of settlement over the years. It was originally named Hynesbury Head. However, after the discovery of the Iron Age artifacts and fotrifications, and apparent confusion over a reference to the area as Hedenesburia–it was renamed Hengistbury Head after the Jutish king Hengest. The area is now a nature reserve with plenty of well maintained paths around the...

Tony had a day trip to Lulworth Cove on the Jurassic Coast. A return trip on the train to Wool was around £9, and from Wool to Lulworth Cove a return trip on the bus was £1.80. “You didn’t expect it to be that cheap, did you?” asked the driver. At the Cove she wished Tony luck, and looking at the...

Jul 17, 2012 - Bournemouth - Tuesday July 17th

Hello all, Well, the sun is out today. Get the cossies out, we will hit the beach. I included the blood pudding at breakfast. I won't do it again. Cross it off the list. Brenda and I caught the bus to Sandbanks, a rather expensive part of Poole right on the point of the harbour. There are some lovely homes and the beach is very nice. We went round the beach to the Haven Hotel and had a cocktail watching the boats come in and out of the harbour. In the sun. The Cherbourg ferry came through while we were there. We caught this over from France...

Jul 15, 2012 - Bournemouth - Sunday July 15th and Monday 16th

Hello everyone, We hit the lovely seaside city of Bournemouth today, Brian's birth city. We are staying at the Durley Dean hotel just 100 meters from the beach cliffs. Once again though, it is not a day for the beach. We settle in at the hotel which, once again, would have been one of the top Bournemouth locations forty years ago. It is a bit old and tired looking but the room is not too bad and it is clean. We walk down to the beach and walked up to the Bournemouth Pier. It is the traditional English pier with amusements on the end. I...

Feb 21, 2011 - New Forest & Bournemouth

We have now moved back to the mainland and stayed in the New Forest. The New Forest was created by William I in 1079 for private hunting parties, mainly deer. It consists mainly of forest and heathland with a number of bogs. Lyndhurst is in the heart of the New Forest and there we met our 1st wild ponies. They are very inquisitive and love to check you out to see if you have any food. (Best not to feed them as they do bite!). They are free to wonder the forest and have right of way on any of the roads along with the cows that also roam this...

Aug 27, 2004 - Durweston..(The Haywood Sacred site)

Farnham to Taunton. Now with a second car, one went to Southhampton to pick up Michael and Yvonne, the second went direct to Durweston to locate the local church. Having done the Smith 'sacred site' it was now the Haywood's turn. Both cars met in a neighbouring village for lunch (couldn't find a shop in Durweston) then off to the church. The Warden responded to a phone call and came over to take the Chalice out from its locked storage. The chalice is part of the John Haywood convict story...found and returned to the church, supposedly with...
