Jun 2, 2016 - More Spectating

Today's entry will be very short, since it was another lazy day highlighted by the evening programme at the Winter Gardens. We strolled, we ate, we did laundry. At around 5.45pm we all caught the courtesy bus to the ballroom to watch the early rounds of the professional Latin competition and the ballroom formation. The professional Latin was outstanding, as you might expect. We particularly enjoyed Round Three, which was when the high performers from last year entered the competition. We enjoyed watching Yulia and Riccardo (the heirs...

Jun 1, 2016 - Spectators

We don't have much to report for today. After our usual morning walk we met the gang for breakfast and then chilled in our room for a while. We strolled into town for a light lunch and checked out a shop or two before returning to our room. The afternoon was spent relaxing, reading and preparing our formal outfits for tonight. Because it has been a slow 'news day' we've added a couple of photos of the hotel, which is quite grand in its Edwardian style. We caught the courtesy bus back to the Winter Gardens to watch the amateur ballroom and...

May 31, 2016 - A Day Off

Today was all about taking it easy. We woke around 7.00am and went for our customary walk along the beach - the tide was fully in and the fresh breeze created a slight swell, something we had not seen previously. After returning to the hotel we showered and got ready to head out. We walked on own in to Blackpool for breakfast and enjoyed a leisurely coffee and snack at Cafe Nero. We then ambled through the shopping mall where Ron picked up a dress shirt before we walked back to the hotel. The next stop was the laundromat to catch up on a...

May 30, 2016 - This is it

Once again the day dawned bright and clear but there would be no walk this morning. We went straight to breakfast with the gang and then headed to the Winter Gardens for an hour of practice. Unfortunately about 200 dancers had the same idea so it was very cramped going, but still a good chance for a final run-through on the floor. We picked up some cold snacks for lunch from a nearby Marks & Spencer and were back at the hotel by 11.00am. This left an hour to chill before Vik started on Barb's hair and make-up. That took a good 1.5 hours,...

May 29, 2016 - Getting a feel for the floor

We woke fairly early as usual and headed straight out for a walk along the promenade. On our return to the hotel we showered, changed and went to the restaurant to meet the team for breakfast. We had a leisurely breakfast while we planned the day - essentially that meant straight to the venue so that Barb and Xavier could get some practice time on the floor during general dance sessions. In between practices we watched the heats of the amateur adult Latin. To provide some indication of the standard, the Aussie couple who won the NZ Open...

May 28, 2016 - Getting Sorted

We woke early, as expected, and decided to start the day with a walk along the promenade. With clear skies and no wind to speak of it was a very pleasant way to work up a breakfast appetite. We then met the rest of the gang (Xavier, Vik and Doug) for breakfast in the hotel restaurant. It was a very good continental spread and we ate our fill of fruit, yogurt and pastries. Following breakfast, Barb and Xavier were scheduled for a practice session with Vik. With no suitable areas available in the hotel they decided to just use the promenade!...

May 27, 2016 - Getting down to business

After another good breakfast we packed (with some difficulty) and grabbed a taxi to Manchester's Victoria Station. Picking up our pre-ordered tickets was very easy and after a coffee and a short wait we set off to Salford to change to our first class train. The trip to Blackpool took and hour and a half and was quite comfortable. We arrived in Blackpool just after 11.00am and caught a taxi to our digs for the next week, the Imperial Hotel. Our rooms weren't ready so we dropped off our bags and set about ticking off the tourist 'must-do's'...

Apr 11, 2015 - Blackpool

Day 55 11th April 2015 by Georgia Today we drove to Blackpool and Edinburgh. We walked around the blistering and windy blackpool city. We stopped and bought some of the famous rock candy they are like sticks of lollies. I had the cookies and cream one. We wondered thru a chilli market I tried a marshmallow covered in chilli chocolate it had a kick but was divine. Mum and Dad forced us to go down on the beach. IT WAS SO WINDY. We had lunch in the car and drove to a place called Moffatt to watch the Grand National. I did not enjoy because...

Jul 15, 2013 - day 2 on the way: Blackpool

Arrived in Blackpool, booked in to our tiny room (Service 10/10 though) It was fairly warm. Hot for the locals, and our room was stuffy so we went for a walk on the Pier and Alyssa paddled. NO PHOTOES The plan for today, while Jennie was doing her investigation of the local Waste Management Plant was for Alyssa and I to go to the beach and then explore a bit; maybe go up to the top of Tower. It was too cold to go near the water; the tide was way out any way so that meant lots of sand (yes definitely sand, not white, no shells, but sand) so...

Jul 14, 2013 - day 1 scottish trip: Dog Agility trials then Blackpool

Blackpool I first overnight stop but first we picked up Jennie's granddaughter for dog Agility trials. These are the most amazing events. They occur frequently, nearly every week over summer. There are orderly rows of campervans and tents all with their 'fences' to keep dogs in. Although most are so well behaved that they probably wouldn't run away. I have no idea of the numbers but it seems like hundreds of vans There are 9 rings going all the time with competitors from 5 to old age. And dogs are across a wide range of shapes sizes...

Jul 20, 2012 - British Open (Golf) at Royal Lytham & St Annes

Andrew and David were up and away early to get to The British Open. They had planned to walk to the Park and Ride up the road then catch a bus but the buses were few and far between so they walked the three miles to Royal Lytham and St Annes. They got to the course just after 8.00am and returned home (walking again) just before 8.00pm. They were both tired but had had a fantastic experience seeing the top golfers in the world both from the stands and the fairways. Many stories ensued about the proximity to Tiger Woods and other golfing...

Jul 19, 2012 - British Open (Golf) at Royal Lytham & St Annes

Tuesday morning we woke to a lovely day, and after having a coffee and chat with David in their garden, we headed off back to Home Farm in Somerset. It was a lovely sunny day and we just relaxed for the afternoon. Andrew stopped by for a drink after dinner. On Wednesday we were at West Country Motorhomes service centre bright and early to have some maintenance work done on Homer’s waste water tank, and a cracked pipe replaced. It was horrible and raining, but we were given the use of a courtesy car (a little Citroen that David reckons is...
