May 6, 2019 - Top this (world's tallest building)

06 May – Monday Ramadan means followers cannot eat or drink between sunrise and sunset, but they make up for it after dark. It is also common for everyone to be up well before sunrise to feast (suhur), and the mosque is busy early too. The weather remains hot, mid 30’s, and low humidity, and today we are off on a tiki tour. We grab a day pass for AED22 each ($9), covers the metro, tram and bus network. Tony has downloaded every app on the local transport system, but found them hard to use when it comes to bus routes, so we will just rely on...

May 4, 2019 - A Day at the mall snow Skiing.

New sea cards in hand we ventured out on our own to the Emirates Mall of Dubai. 5 stories high in places, a ski slop for some indoor skiing , an ice rink, aquarium, banks, laundry’s, and a grocery store. To many other things to list. There was a trail of small foreign coins behind us so we could find our way back to the taxi stand. Had lunch at Five Guys burgers. We are American and need burgers and fries to maintain our image. Paid with a strange mix of Dinars and US. We managed to find in a mall the size of Rhode Island a back scratcher,...

May 4, 2019 - May the Fourth be with you

Tony heads out to take photos of the alleyway so Trina can find us. They are a big help, but Tony still doesn’t realise he is taking pictures of the back entrance. Trina meets us after breakfast, it is great seeing her again, eight years since we first met in China. We walk down to the Gold Souk at the end of the street to get hassled at every step, most of the stuff for sale here is fake. We head for the parking building, and it is then that Tony realises his mistake with the streets. Doh, haha. We spend about 20 minutes waiting to get out...

May 3, 2019 - Playing in the sandpit

03 May – Friday We are called to prayer at 5.45, and wonder how we are going to cope if this carries on through the day. We go back to sleep and awake at 9am, Tony’s alarm didn’t go off, so it is lucky that Cynthea’s did. We have a quick wash and head to breakfast. There is a lot to choose from, but are a little wary as to how long it has been there, and wonder how effective the burners are keeping the food warm. We try a bit of everything, and make the most of the Nescafe instant coffee available (small cups for the coffee though). We have...

May 3, 2019 - More than we bargained for......part 2

Driving down the main drag the highway is lined with reflective windowed buildings in every height, shape, and size. All built since 2003. There are at least 15 more under construction. You can easily see and understand why one forth of the cranes are here in Dubai. The bus turned a corner by the famous seven star hotel whose name is beyond my spelling ability that costs $28,000 a night. The bus pulls over and the guide says you can get out see for 15 minutes . We are many blocks from that hotel and there are construction walls across the...

May 3, 2019 - More than we bargained for.......

Since Dubai decided to have a face to face with everyone on board and keep our passports, the people getting off tomorrow must pick their passports up from 5:30am to 7:30am at a place designated for their floor. I am assuming ours are in the ship vault once again. We were to meet in the music hall with our tour group and with our bus sticker was properly attached to our shirts, sat and waited to be called. The first group called was going into the dessert by Jeep, than by camel, to camp in a Bedoin tent for 24 hours. It is 96 degrees....

May 2, 2019 - 20hrs to Freedom

Between 10am and 1pm tomorrow we must pick up an immigration tickets to leave the ship in an orderly manner as our numbers are called. We have a night shore trip in Dubai tomorrow, on Mother Earth, off the ship, on solid ground, hip hip hooray! The unimaginable happened, the women pulled it off and won trivia, battle of the Sexes. They lost with the question “What was the first canned vegetable? “ Men said corn, correct answer peas. I knew the answer from another cruise. Belly dancing lesson number two, what fun. I need to find an...

May 2, 2019 - Dubai dooby doo... (go on, sing it)

02 May – Friday Tony has booked a car to meet us at Dubai, we are about twenty minutes drive from airport, and could have taken a taxi, but we decide to use Booking.com’s service to see how they measure up. It is a bit on the pricy side, NZ$37, and quite a bit more than a taxi, but we figure there may be a couple of dodgy buggers about ripping us off once we get there. We will be too late, and too tired, to try and figure public transport once we get there. At least this way if there is a problem we have the backing of the company to sort...

May 1, 2019 - Great day on a bad ship

We are still 36 hrs from Dubai. Today none of the elevators worked on our side of the ship. The walk to the second set is just a couple of blocks away. There is wood patterned contact paper over the second set of floor choice panels in each elevator. Rumor has it new panels have been ordered and sent to Dubai so they can be replaced. The elevator drop was recorded and shown on Australian TV yesterday. Our safe screamed ERROR-ERROR this morning! Called maintenance who told us to call housekeeping. Twenty minutes later a man arrived with a...

Apr 30, 2019 - Pirates low on list of threats.

This ship came out of shipyard from Miami with about 1000 contractors who sailed with it to Barcelona. One of them told me ,while standing in line for passport pickup, about 400 stayed aboard when it set sail. We have had an elevator drop two floors with people on it. But were told the emergency brakes did their job. The Wind Jammer Buffett has several traveling leaks from the ceiling. Floor six has diesel fumes causing respiratory problems, which are the inside rooms with no balcony. We are almost at the end of of deck 7 toward the front...

Apr 29, 2019 - To Sea is to Trivia

This is our second Sea day and we have entered the Gulf of Aden. The ship had their code word “Safe Haven” drill which means we must be in the center of the ship or nside passageways outside our rooms. No where there are windows and we are not allowed to have our balcony drapes open at night. That also applies to anywhere outside on the ship till May 2nd when we reach Dubai. They will be handing out our passports tomorrow. Dubai wants face to face immigration with everyone. We have played cards, trivia, made Origami winged hearts, watched...
