Some snaps from the falcon visit. We forgot to mention - the falcon is the only animal that can have a passport. Also, they are entitled to travel on a plane on their own seat with their owner. They do not have to be in a box or carry on luggage. They do have to wear a hood however. This is to settle the bird for the trip.

Sep 27, 2018 - Homeward Bound

Today is our last proper day in Abu Dhabi and we booked ourselves a tour of the Abu Dhabi Falconery Hospital. The falcon is the most prized possession in most families. It is illegal for them to hunt in the UAE because it is such a small country and the prey will become extinct. The falcon is now an endangered species - highly protected. Average weight of a falcon is approx 1 1/2kg yet it is strong enough to kill and carry a gazelle. The female is the biggest and stronger of the 2 sex's. The Peregrine breed is the fastest bird with a top...

Sep 26, 2018 - Hot.....Africa Hot

Abu Dhabi. Hot! We have our transfer to our hotel and off we goooooo! Speed limit 120klm. Our driver settles on 110. But thankfully they drive in a sane manner here. Sticking to their own lane. The area is flat- hazy from the heat - very clean - amazing roads. People working on the grass / garden on the verges alongside the highway. All of this and it is still dawn. It is hot! We arrive at our hotel just after 6am. As our original room is not available they do offer us another but it does not come with a balcony. Instead you can walk direct...

Sep 26, 2018 - Heading East....via the desert.

We landed in Abu Dhabi 5:35am Wednesday Temp - Hot..... Africa Hot. We traveled all day and night from Italy to here. Once we landed in Rome (after 2 trains and 1 plane) we were then shuttled onto a bus from the tarmac. The bus took approx 10 mins to arrive at a terminal. A toilet stop - locate our flight on the board - make our way through immigration. Easy...right? We were sooooooo wrong! A queue awaits us and our next flight was scheduled for 22:00. Current time = 21:20. The Scott Girls hit panic mode. We asked a security person if we...

Jul 30, 2018 - Almost home

Arrived in Abu Dhabi yesterday afternoon and temperature was in the low 40's. Today's high is only 45. The city is still very hazy from a recent sand storm and the dust in the air is apparently keeping it a bit cooler than what it would have been otherwise. Visited the Grand Mosque this morning. This mosque was built only 10 years ago and is magnificent. If you look at the photo's, it is not a fault with the camera - it's just that the dust in the air makes it hard to distinguish the building from the sky. Glenda had to wear a full head to...

My travel experience

Apr 17, 2017 - Abu Dhabi

Today cruise#1 came to and end when all but 300 passengers disembarked. After getting our new room keys/boarding passes, we were off the ship and ready to take a tour. We booked a private one, because Celebrity had nothing for us back-to-back passengers until a few days ago when they finally came through with a city tour. Oh, well. We joined another couple for the first part of our extraordinarily disjointed tour. The man who picked us up muttered under his breath that he was scheduled to conduct a desert safari today and they stuck him...

Jan 12, 2017 - The Emirates

After an early start, the check-in and security are very quick and we have plenty of time for breakfast and shopping. Armed with a new toothbrush for Gail, which of course I had to buy, we are now set for our next adventure, Abu Dhabi. We are flying for the first time on Etihad, UAE’s official airline. The plane is lovely and it is nice to again and be on an airline that doesn’t charge for absolutely everything. A pillow (that is designed to double as a neck pillow), blanket and excellent headphones and lots of choices for entertainment....

Southeast Asia 2017

Aug 6, 2016 - Abu Hottie

We make our way from Dubai out into the desert singing the them from Lawrence of Arabia. And guess what? It got even hotter! It's only a couple hour drive, but I wasn't going without a full tank of gas. Which was really cheap, imagine that. We attempt to find the hotel, an ultra modern behemoth of 5 or 6 towers, I lost count, see picture. 7? Not that I could tell which one was the hotel!! Fast forward, we find it, and the lobby is an enormous ship bridge type of look. It it is perched on a strip of beach so precariously and incongruously,...

Shortest trip to UAE

Jul 16, 2016 - Still in Abu Dhabi!!

Flight to Cairo was to leave at 8.35 this morning. My boarding pass had a 3 in the gate section so that's where I headed. Sat outside for a while. Had a look around There was a departure board in Arabic. Didn't change to English. In hindsight could have used flight number. But why, when I had information in my hand? But on one wall, the one I was facing, departures, were in arabic. On other side that I would only have seen if I had moved more there was a board in English. Anyway, decided though flight wasn't yet on gate entrance I...

Jun 30, 2016 - Last Minute Stuff

There is not much left to report except stinking hot weather and the fact that Al is still scrambling to get everything done on his last day at work today. When the weather says feels like 50 it is high time we get out of here. I've checked us in for tomorrow's flight and with a bit of packing left to do we should be ready to check out of the villa tomorrow at 7:30 am when we hand in the keys. See you all soon.

Helping out at school, cleaning the condo really well for move out inspection, cancelling our phone, TV and internet, closing our bank account, returning the rental car, and packing. Our flight is a bit of an indirect approach. First we fly from Abu Dhabi to Muscat, Oman. We have a layover for about 1.5 hours before we fly to Frankfurt, Germany. Al arranged a hotel for us to spend the night to...
