May 23, 2016 - A school and a lagoon

May 23 We started the day a bit late after breakfast because Joe was bitten by a monkey in Laos and had to go to the clinic for rabies shots. We waited around for about 45 minutes and then headed off without him. While we were waiting we tried to feed the fish in the pond around the building but the bread had cinnamon and the fish didn’t like it! Alice wasn’t feeling well so decided to spend the day at the hotel. We then took the bus to the Watkoh School near the hotel. Peter had never been there before so he was as interested as the rest...

May 22, 2016 - Recling Buddha and white kangaroos

Up at a fairly reasonable time – and have actually gotten use to the time change! Off to breakfast then check out and get on the hotel vans to head down to the bus. On the road at about 8:00 AM. We head south for a long drive. After one bathroom break (where I find a nice container of banana caterpillars) we stop for a little longer at Payao Dam – a lake that supplies water to much of the surrounding area. We wandered down to the lake and were not impressed. Lots of dead critters – and one very big snail that was scooting along! Also saw...

Nov 18, 2013 - Sukhothai 3

Day 3 Up late-ish as were so late to bed last night, usual breakfast while we decided what to do. We asked our host the best way to Si Satchanalai which also has an historic park with ancient temples etc. He suggested hiring a motorbike, it is about 55km away. Why not? and he took us into New Sukhothai to pick up a hire bike. We were given a shiny red automatic Yamaha, picked up our helmets, paid and we were off. The last time I rode a motorbike was in Bermuda five years ago so I took it for a quick spin along the road. Dead simple these...

Nov 17, 2013 - Sukhothai/Loi Kratong 2

Day 2 After all the walking round the Old City yesterday, we decided to relax today, so leisurely breakfast and a slow stroll into New Sukhothai. Absolutely nothing of interest in this town, except some monks building a platform on the river. We tried to find an ATM to get some cash, but all the Thai banks wanted to charge 150 baht for the pleasure of us taking money out - outrageous, but no alternative. To add injury to insult, I accidentally dropped my camera and now it don't work! Much blue air! It was very hot, so it was time for a cold...

Nov 17, 2013 - Loi Kratong

Loi Kratong is celebrated on the full moon in November, it's origins are a bit obscure but it is believed the third king, Ramkhamhaeng, made an offering to the god of the river in the shape of a lotus flower. He is revered in Thailand as the founder of the nation as he set up much of the apparatus of state, plus he established the Thai alphabet. In fact, the Thais seem to take their kings pretty seriously - photos everywhere. We caught the local songthaw, a 'bus' (a truck, open sided, with wooden benches down its length on both sides and...

Nov 17, 2013 - Sukhothai

Sukhothai Breakfast then wait for the taxi to the bus station. 08.30 came and went and by 08.45 we were getting anxious; the hotel called Straybus but in the end we called a taxi. The traffic was horrendous, gridlock everywhere , so the driver bailed out and took us on the overhead highway. Thankfully we arrived at the bus station in good time, boarded the bus and we were off! The bus journey was longer than expected, not due to heavy traffics or anything else we could see; it just took longer. We stopped twice at the Thai equivalent of our...

Nov 30, 2012 - Visited the Old City in Sukhothai

Spent the day hiring a couple old bikes (for 30 baht each- about 65p) and gently peddled our way around the old historical city at Sukhothai. After the luxuries of the hotels we stayed at on the River Kwai we are - how should I put it - at the opposite end of the market in a cheap guesthouse (~£11 for 2 nights). To make matters worse there is swampy land all around with stagnant water but remarkably few mozzies. The actual guest house and grounds are quite pleasant but our cabin is probably one of the oldest and I keep checking for holes...

Mar 7, 2012 - Di capitale in capitale

My Big Trip

Feb 22, 2012 - Thailand - Day 44 - Old Sukhothai City

Woke up at 5am, grabbed our motorcycle and headed out on the road by 5:30am. Sukhothai Historical Park is 12kms away from the city center of Sukhothai and we wanted to arrive there prior to sunrise, also the beat the crowds and the extreme heat of the day. We arrived at 6am. Sukhothai was the first kingdom of Thailand established some 700 years ago. The province is located on the lower edge of the northern region, 427kms north of Bangkok, and covers some 6,596 square kms. Established in around 1237 - 1257, Sukhothai literally means "Dawn of...

Feb 21, 2012 - Thailand - Day 43 - Relax & Blog Day in Sukhothia

Slept in until 9:30am, worst night of sleep for me in a while, when I got up and looked in the mirror this morning I knew I had wrecked myself during the night. My head was freezing cold due to the room fan hitting it all night, we only had one thin bed sheet covering us which normally that would have been enough however the temperature gets cooler at night here and drops below 18 degrees Celsius. The bed was as hard as a cement slab and had no give what so ever. I had to keep rolling over onto different sides and on my back so my hips...

Feb 20, 2012 - Thailand - Day 42 - Travel to Sukhothai

We left our hotel room at 10:30am and walked to the sky train. Took a ride to Mo Chit and from there we proceeded to walk through two parks before coming to the main bus terminal. We walked quite far and were feeling the heat of the day, in the second park we decided to take a much needed break and rest for a minute taking in the lovely surroundings of the flowers and greenery. Finally we found the bus terminal and bought two direct tickets to Sukhothai for 1pm, just a little over an hour and a half wait in the terminal before departure. We...
