Oct 29, 2009 - Leaving the Sanctuary :(

Hey everyone, I am far to depressed to make this a long blog post. So today is my last day with the elephants and Manhuts. I am really sad. The Manhuts have basically adopted me into their family. I stopped eating meals at the hotel restaurant, because I now eat at Panamwan's house. It was really awkward eating at the restaurant though, because half the people there serving me were eating dinner on the floor of Panamwan's place the night before, which I didn't like at all. The first week I came back I generally went back to the hotel to...

Oct 25, 2009 - Quality Time with Mr. Boon

Hello Everyone! Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while, I have actually been really busy! Ok, first I will talk about my adventures with Mr. Boon. It usually happens when I am just sitting in the hotel lobby waiting for the Greenway people to show up, when he comes up to me and asks me to accompany him to town. On the way into town, Mr. Boon's favorite radio station is the only English music station, and plays literally the worst music ever created. The songs usually go something like this- "Yooooooou, oh yeah yooooou, are as beautiful...

Hi Everyone! The Internet is fixed! Woo! So, where do I start... First I would like to thank everyone for their messages via mytripjoural. Julia has sent them all to me, and I absolutely love reading them and finding out who is reading the blog! I have a few to many to respond to personally, but really, it means so much to me that people out there are reading this and supporting me. Alright, now lets go back 2 weeks ago... I left the elephant sanctuary Saturday morning, and spent the night at the Brown house alone, as everyone had decided...

Oct 16, 2009 - Update via an intermediary

Hey everyone! This is Julia, Paula's older sister, posting for her since the internet is currently broken at the elephant sanctuary in Phitsanulok. After leaving the elephant sanctuary her third week in Thailand, Paula spent a week in Koh Samet on the luscious beaches with her fellow program participants. It was beautiful and relaxing. Paula met some lovely new people and reunited with a few from earlier. Overall, good times! Then she returned to Bangkok for a few days to gather herself and prepare to return to the elephant sanctuary,...

Oct 2, 2009 - Leaving the Sanctuary, Headed to the Beach

Hello again! So, today is my last day with the elephants (maybe, I'll talk more about it later). There is so, so, so much to tell, and it is so hard trying to write it all out in the ten to fifteen minutes I generally have. But, I feel like I have left out a very important part of my experiences here. That would be the Manhuts I have met and gotten to know well over the past two weeks. The main manhuts are a single family and the lead two are married. That is Panamwan and Lungdeet. There are about four others and I'm not even going to...

Oct 1, 2009 - Quality time with the Elephants

Hello! So, the past week has been very eventful. First, Chris and Andrea left the elephant sanctuary, which was very sad. They were so nice to me, and I really appreciated everything they did for me. So if they read this, they better come to Chicago to visit me!!! Three more people came on Sunday, all from Britain. There is Kim, who is middle-aged and reminds me a bit of my mom, because she is willing to jump into anything, may it be pushing a car out of the mud, or the first person in her group to ride an elephant. Then there is Tracey,...

Sep 23, 2009 - Elephants!

Hello! So I am at the elephant sanctuary, just finished feeding the elephants banana leaves, and got a ride back (on an elephant) to come use the computer. We get to use the internet or swim every time we finish taking care of the elephants!) It is fantastic here. I came up with Chris and Andria, the Irish couple, and we are the only ones here. It is about a 10 minute drive from where we live to the elephant place, both of which are literally in the middle of nowhere. I live in a hut, which is basically a bunch of straw tied together and...

Sep 19, 2009 - Last Few Days In Singburi, Thailand

Hello everyone! So this may be my last entry for a while, as I will be going to the elephant sancuary tomorrow. It is five hours north of Where I am now in Singburi, and I don't know how often a I will have internet access. So yesterday, we went to Lop Buri, the monkey town. It is literally a town where there are monkeys everywhere, although they mostly stay in a few old temple ruins. They were very cute, but also would take anything hanging out of your pockets, or anything shiny. I think one of them managed to get a waterbottle. But they...

Sep 17, 2009 - I'm Here - Continued

Ok, I have more time now. So, the weekend market. Imagine a maze of hundreds and hundreds of little stalls, all connected by small alleyway-like passages. If you know the market well, you know which ones lead to the best silk shops and candy makers. Bob knew it all. He showed me around everywhere. I got these really sweet Thai farmer part that are really comfortable, a ton of crazy fruits that I have never heard of before, and rocks! While in the best carpet vender's stall, we met some nice Australians, who we ate lunch with. Lunch was...
