Apr 4, 2017 - Phang Nga Bay

We first became aware of Phuket (please pronounce it foo-kette) during the Viet Nam War. This island beach resort at the very southern end of Thailand was an R&R spot for weary soldiers looking for a respite from jungle horrors. The Thai are good hosts and an accommodating people and even in the late 1980’s when we took a group of our students there for their own version of R&R from the big cities of Asia, there were signs of the drugs, sex and rock and roll still clearly evident. We took the kids to a beautiful beach and we spent the day...

Feb 13, 2017 - Sailing the Adaman Sea off Phuket

Time to leave Singapore and start our next adventure. It is a quick drive to airport through consistently very clean and modern neighbourhoods. Singapore airport is incredible with every high end shop as you can imagine. We have over a 3 hour wait so we go for most expensive mimosas ever. It is only a 45 minute flight to Kuala Lumpur but as we are only in the airport Gail informs me that it doesn’t count as a new country. The KL airport is different, long narrow with virtually no food choices unless you want chocolate. They are everywhere...

Jan 26, 2017 - First day in Thailand - Hello Phuket

Not great weather at a sea day so the day spent primarily inside which actually works out well. We have our meeting for back to back cruisers and then a wine tasting. Old world vs new world. Here we have an hour long tasting of 12 wines for comparison. There are a few we enjoy, others not so much. The additional hour and half time change is taking its toll so we are not late tonight. Our morning is somewhat at leisure as we are not scheduled to arrive in Phuket till 11 am. So breakfast is in the main dining room. It’s the only way you have...

Jan 12, 2017 - At sea

Relaxing, cruising along in a very calm sea. Activities punctuated with eating and falling asleep on a lounger. I learnt how to make the towel animals (sadly my elephants legs were so fat that he did the splits). Dinner with a nice Auckland couple and then a game of ? On the deck (forgotten what you call it - caused by the influence of a few wines). It was a good day.

Jan 11, 2017 - Phuket

Leisurely brekkie and morning. Midday and off on a tender to visit Phuket and attend a 'booking'. Walk along the promenade with my hand constantly up - NO, I don't want a taxi, a lady or a tour. A little retail therapy then off to attend my 'booking'. A 3 hour Spa Pamper - Foot massage & Reflexology, an Almond & Salt body scrub all finished off with a coconut cream massage. I was in heaven. I floated as I wandered back to the pier to get a tender back to the ship. Late dinner then I fell asleep at the show.

Jan 26, 2016 - Patong Beach

Quiet morning, just relaxing & reading round the pool. At noon we were picked up & transferred to a hotel in Patong, about ten miles up the coast. Not such a nice hotel but at least we got to explore a bit of Patong. We walked along the promenade in the late afternoon but the whole place was a bit of a disappointment. The beach was crowded as were the roads & it reminded me of the Spanish Riviera. We did wander around to the popular walking street it is closed to traffic in the evening. There were little bars & restaurants lining both...

Jan 25, 2016 - Gibbon Rehabilitation Project

We had decided not to go on the travel company's day trip to Phi Phi island but to do our own thing. We were told about a Gibbon Rehabilitation Programme that had been set up in a National Park in the North East of the island. It sounded different so our guide had organised a mini bus & driver to take us the hour drive to the park. We had to pay about £4 each to get in the park but the Gibbon Rehabilitation centre does'nt charge so a cheap deal. We were met by an English guy who works as a volunteer & he told us all about the Programme. The...

Jan 24, 2016 - Phuket Island

We arrived on time at 6am & were picked up & taken to our hotel in Karon Bay on the West side of the island. However, as expected, our rooms weren't available at that early hour so it was off to find some breakfast & hang about till they were. When we met with our local guide & mentioned how tiring the coach ride had been he said that we could always fly back to Bangkok instead of returning on another overnight journey. We decided that it was worth the extra money so we told him to go ahead & book it for us. We also got to have an extra...

Apr 27, 2015 - Phuket - Thailand

Arrival was nightmare. Didn't get the stroller at the airplane. Hugeeeee line at immigration, matteus crying cause he was sleeping... An angel showed up and managed to bring me to special immigration. Luggage was broken... Good part started with the taxi service from the hotel. It was fresh, clean, an oasis. Had some sleep and met Carla Danny and the kids at the swimming pool. After we headed to the beach club in Surin. What a lovely time. Drinks, massage, sun bath, jump in the sea!

Nov 14, 2014 - Day 20 - Resting in our hotel

John writing: We spent one night at the Avista Resort prior to going on our sea kayak trip. After the kayak trip we returned to the Avista Resort and found this in our hotel room. See Photos. I would like to get used to this level of service! Today we spent the day hanging out at the hotel, enjoying the air conditioned room with good internet, and a beautiful pool. I thought about going to the place that lets you go into an enclosure to play with tigers both large and small, but I would have had to spend several hours in the heat and...

Nov 13, 2014 - Days 17-19 Kayaking in Phang Nga Bay

Day 17-19 Sea Kayaking Phang Nga Bay Lois writing now Last summer, when we were planning this trip to Southeast Asia, John went looking for an outfitter here in Thailand that would have offer a tour, using sea kayaks similar to the ones we are used to paddling (not fat clunky sit-on-tops). We were looking for a trip that would suit our experience and interests, and would take us away from crowds. He chose Paddle Asia for a 3 day tour in Phang Nga Bay (pronounced Ponga Bay). It was a great choice! We spent the days in kayaks, with our guide...

Nov 10, 2014 - Days 15-16 Saigon-Bangkok-Phuket

John writing now: Sunday, our guide Duong, had made arrangements for us to have lunch with Tiger, the guide I had in 2011. When Tiger showed up, it turns out it was another Tiger. When I showed Duong a photo of my Tiger, she knew him also, and in fact had recommended him to her boss for a guiding position. We went out to lunch with Pattie, a member of our tour group from Buffalo NY. Pattie was a special ed teacher who had taught in a jail during part of her career. The stories she told us were hilarious. My favorite one involved two of her...
