Mar 16, 2016 - Ko Phi Phi

With no cars allowed on the island, but hundreds of cats, I am instantly taken with this beautiful place. The more we explore, the more smitten I become. The beaches are picturesque and the views are breathtaking. We climb up the steep mountainside to the viewpoint. The island stretches out beneath me. From here I can see both Ton Sai Bay and Loh Dalam Bay, their white sandy beaches being gently kissed by the crystal blue water of the Andaman sea. As I look down over the island, I remind myself of the devastation caused by the 2004 Tsunami....

Feb 15, 2015 - Koh Phi Phi

Thailand 2015

Jan 19, 2012 - Thailand - Days 8 & 9 - Koh Phi Phi

We took an hour and half speed boat ride to the island of Koh Phi Phi on an old fashioned wooden ocean boat, arriving just shortly after. First impressions: wow this place is packed with tourists! Walking along the dock into the 'welcome' area of the island entrance you are greeted with a dozen tour vendors looking for you business. Of course they only have rooms left that start at $2000 - $3000 baht. We decided as a group to walk the island and see what we can find for accommodations on our own. We found one vendor offering a couple rooms...

Dec 2, 2011 - Life From The Top

Two nights down in the Orange Tree. One to go. Our room is chronically uncomfortably loud at night so we are finding it is sort of mucking with our sleep patterns at this point. It is likely the only disappointment of the trip so far though and from what we hear Home is getting progressively colder so we will not dwell on what few setbacks paradise has to offer but we will say this... when you are forced to stay up most of the night because of circumstance it really does limit what you have the heart to do once daylight breaks. We are...

Dec 1, 2011 - What Would Jacques Cousteau Do?

Last night we had planned on playing things pretty quiet as we were still nursing off our all day head aches but found we didn't quite want to head to bed yet so we made our way down to this place called the Reggae Bar. The attraction to this place is that they have free Muay Thai fights (Thai Kick Boxing) so we wandered in to get ring side seats only to realize that it was a little bit more then just that. As it turns out, what they do is have 2 rounds of "brawler" fights where they get drunks from the audience to go up for a volunteer...

Nov 30, 2011 - Festivities & Friends

Well since we had to move hotels after last night from a place called the Ivory to a hotel called the Orange Tree (couldn't manage to get a booking in one place for the entire stretch within our budget) we decided to make today our "down day" on Phi Phi. Just the way the check-out/check-in worked out, it sort of left us buggered for doing any touring today. So we basically spent the day relaxing on the beach, moving our gear around, dabbling in the foods, and just generally getting to know the island a bit better. All and all it was a...

Nov 29, 2011 - "I'M ON A BOAT"

Before we start... For any of you who have no idea what we are referencing with the boat thing... check out this YouTube video of an old SNL skit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iUjx4_X1qA That's right Y'all. We be on a boat, all the way to Koh Phi Phi. After almost a week of heaven it was time to set off on a mission to discover is there are indeed multiple degrees of paradise. This was tough as we truly loved the resort we were at and Ko Lanta had been so good to us, and relaxing as well. When we got on the bus to make way to our ferry...

Nov 14, 2010 - you want massage?

After all the rain we had been having, Sam and I hopped a plane to Phuket, Thailand in search of some sun. When we arrived we took a boat to the island of Ko Phi Phi. Once again, it rained when we arrived, but has since cleared up and been beautiful. We have been exploring the island, eating food, and soaking up some sun. I have realized that Thailand is to the British what Mexico is to Americans. There are lots of young partiers here and every night people are trying to hand you flyers for free drinks, parties, etc. It's not really our...

Jun 18, 2010 - Leave Ko Phi Phi

We woke up late and walked to the docks. I was sad to leave Ko Phi-Phi and Thailand. Unfortunately the sea was very rough and some of the boats were tipping. We started the 2 hour ferry journey to Phuket. I vomited during the journey because I didn't know I was motion sick. We arrived at Phuket at 1:00 and got a 2 hour taxi ride to the airport. Thailand is really nice especially seeing the Grand Palace and the reclining Buddha and the tropical islands. The food is also very nice but it is mainly rice and noodle. Thailand is a Buddhists...

Jun 17, 2010 - Viewpoint

My mum and Dad decided to go to a viewpoint to get a view of all of Ko Phi Phi. It was 4:00 when we arrived at the start of the steps. There are over 300 steps to the second view point. We started climbing the steps. We had to go quite slow because my Mum was getting tired. We passed loads of trees and ferns and other plants you would see in a jungle. The steps were steep. If there was a Tsunami most people would run into the mountains to get out of reach. We passed a hotel over looking Phi-Phi we were about 90 steps up so you could not see...

Jun 17, 2010 - Viewpoint

Sometime overnight, it started raining in a determined, tropical kind of way. By the time we had to get out for breakfast, it was still raining, only less so. With the forecast not looking so good, we had a decision to make. Not really being very in tune with the type of "paradise" on offer at Phi phi, the expected rain tipped the balance and prompted us to arrange to leave for Malaysia the next day. We had less than 2 weeks there as it was, so it made sense. There was more we'd wanted to do on Phi phi, but it seemed a worthwhile...
