Jan 13, 2012 - Thailand - Day 1 - 3 - 3 nights on Koh Lipe Island

It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog entry! Dawn’s been doing the hard work... I may be a little rusty, but here goes anyway :) The speed boat to Koh Lipe was an ok ride, unfortunately the windows were fogged over (I have no idea why they would fog over the windows, covering the extreme beauty of the tropical islands that surrounded us throughout the trip!!!!... maybe to give a shock factor when you arrive and surface?) I asked if I could climb the outside ladder to the top of the boat to take a few pictures, and they said sure, no...

May 31, 2009 - Ko Lipe

I was in two minds whether to pay a visit to Ko Lipe and with hindsight I'm glad I made the trip. Ilona's travel funds are a little bit limited at the moment and she elected to stay on the mainland so off I went on my own. Ko Lipe had everything I was looking for, it was quiet thanks to the off-season, a beach hut next to the sea, decent beaches and clear waters which made for decent snorkling. If circumstances meant that I would have meant an extended stay here I wouldn't have complained in the least. My days were spent snorkling in the...

Where's Malcolm?

Apr 30, 2009 - Snorkelling on Lipe

The week here on Lipe has been the most relaxed I can remember, no plans, no appointments or schedules and lots of lazing about, mostly on the beach. There are 4 main beaches Pattaya, Sunlight, Sunset and Karma Beach. All beaches are connected by footpaths and it takes about an hour or two to walk the entire island. The only organised thing I did all week was a boat trip out to the surrounding islands of Koh Dong, Koh Pueng, Koh Hin Sorn and Ro-Kruai. A lovely day out but I ended up pretty sea sick by the end of it and was very glad to get...

Taking the Long Way

Apr 24, 2009 - Koh Lipe

I left KL this morning and flew to Langkawi, a one hour flight, and caught a taxi to Telaga Harbour where I had a speed boat booked to travel to Koh Lipe, a tiny Thailand island about 1.5hours from Langkawi. I had to leave my passport at the boat booking office so it could be put through Malaysia immigration and I was told I would get it back at the Immigration Hut(!) on Koh Lipe. I wasn't overly thrilled with that as I hate to let my passport out of my sight even for a moment but I was assured by the staff that this was the way it was...

Taking the Long Way

Apr 16, 2009 - The Real Paradise

Last stop .....Koh Lipe. Claire and myself wanted to do the couple thing again and chill out somewhere, we read about a National marine park nammed Totorato with three Islands within it, some were deserted but Koh Lipe was " rough and Ready" So we decided to end our Thailand experience on a beach in the middle of nowhere, Doesn't sound bad does it?!!! It was a mission to get too and expensive ( about 20 pounds each) but god damn it was worth it. We had found perfection. ( minus the rubish that washed up on the shore after a few days) The...

Ko Lipe, a small island in the Andaman Sea. When I first saw the island I was a bit worried that it had become another Ko Samui or Phuket....you arrive at Pattaya beach which is pretty crowded with people (sun burned), resorts and longtail boats. Better yet, on approaching Mountain resort on the longtail boat, the first person I saw was a topless sun bather (woman). But the next day a walk around the island showed that this is still a pretty island, not yet spoiled. There are plenty of resorts, but also lots of beach space that is both...

Asia Journey

Jan 8, 2009 - Ko Lipe

I'm still catching up...but we're off today to Ko Lipe (small island) for a week (we think) - no reservations but it seems you don't really need them. We'll keep you posted. ...arrived late (long story but the truck bringing the fuel for the boat was in an accident (?))and we were delayed 2 hours and then the trip was 3 hours on a high speed boat). While waiting we met 3 Swedish couples (all with kids). They are all in the area for 3 weeks. The kids must be used to traveling because even with the delay - they were all really good. We went...

Feb 15, 2008 - Ko Lipe

Before leaving Ko Bulon we made countless phonecalls to bungalows in Ko Lipe only to be told that each and every one of them was full. We often just turn up in a place without pre-booking a room but because we had heard from other travellers that the small island of Lipe was very busy and because the boat to Lipe arrived very late in the day, we had hoped to secure somewhere for our first night. We had contemplated that we might have to spend our first night sleeping on the beach! When we arrived in Lipe we felt we were very lucky to get a...

Jan 23, 2008 - Ko Lipe - tales from a tropical paradise

Nick writing Ko Lipe was something out of a travel fantasy. Incredible beaches. No cars. Great food. Friendly locals and tourists. Cheap beer. Coral reefs. And bungalows held together by termites. Uh. Wait. That's not really a travel fantasy, is it? But it is what we experiences while we stayed at the Porn Resort. Which needs to be explained in its own right, as well. The Porn Resort was not, as you may have thought, an adults-only resort where the activities include oil wrestling and wearing silk robes. In fact, this wasn't the only place...

Jan 20, 2008 - Ko Lipe

After our 5 hour ferry ride that took 9 hours, we arrived in Ko Lipe the Island that "has no available accomodation" on account of word quickl spreading throughout the travel community that one MUST visit now before the secret is out and all is ruined (ie: lots of people traveling here) next season. So we showed up after dark with our new friends from Canada (Anne from Montreal, Glen from Vancouver) via long tail boat from the ferry, to have the girls head to the closest restaurant to guard over the bags and order food, while the boys...
