We had a long agenda today and a very early start—breakfast at 6 a.m. and off by 6:30! Our schedule included four major temples, the most impressive and massive of which was Angkor Wat. Cambodia (also called Kampuchea) is bordered to the East by Vietnam, to the North by Laos and Thailand, to the West by Laos and to the south by the ocean. This country has suffered tremendously through a lot of wars and atrocities, the most recent of which were "the Killing Fields", where the Khmer Rouge (with many children between 10 and 15 years old)...

Dec 18, 2005 - Spot of sightseeing in Bangkok

I was awoken at 4am this morning to find that we were already back in Bangkok. I had no idea where they had dropped us off (it was just on the side of some random street), so I hopped into a taxi and headed for the same cheap guesthouse that I stayed at before on Khao San Road. It was almost 5am by the time I got there so it didn't make much sense to pay for a room for the night. Since the place also had super-cheap internet, I ended up just spending the early hours of the morning updating this site and then checked in around 10am or so....

We got to the Shelter bar a little before First was due to start. Not too many people were in the large restaurant which had two or three bars around its perimeter. He played a nice set and then we had something to eat and drink while about 4 or 5 bands rotated through as the evening wore on. By 1 am. we were ready go but First was a little too far gone to drive. Everyone else was trying to elect me as driver but with right hand drive and Bangkok traffic and not knowing where we were going it seemed doomed to fail, so I said Nuch should...
