Mar 31, 2017 - Lost Horizon

Lost Horizon March 31, 2017 Bangkok, Thailand They turn on the elephants in the pool at 7:00am sharp at the Bandara Resort on Koh Samui. If I wasn’t already awake, they’d wake me up for sure as there are 8 of them just spitting water all over the massive pool and so it sounds like you’re in the middle of a waterfall. It’s actually kind of soothing. But I’m already awake by then because, like everywhere else in SE Asia, at sunrise about an hour earlier, a rooster or two has been cock-a-doodle-doing. There are chickens everywhere in SE...

Mar 19, 2017 - Goodbye Vietnam, hello Thailand

Hey, Today I'm writing from our newest destination, Thailand. But first I'll tell you how we spent our day yesterday. The day itself wasn't anything special, as I told you, we did the tour. It started with a big pagoda, apparently the biggest in Southeast Asia. I got few information as the tour guide told us a couple of interesting stories as we walked around. Before we went into the pagoda,he told us the reason why there is a very high stair before you enter it. The 2 reasons are: - as you enter the pagoda, you have to look down for...

Mar 15, 2017 - Bangkok

Our last day in Bangkok, and of the holiday. We had to have breakfast early in order to check out by 8am, as we had our re-arranged tour to attend. Our guide met us in the lobby, (a different guide today) and we took a taxi to the Skytrain (an elevated rapid transit system). We took this to Taksin Bridge, where we boarded the Chapraya River express. All the signals between crew are done by whistle and the crew jump off onto the jetty from some distance away. Our 1st stop was Wat Saket (Golden Mountain). It's a steep climb of 344 steps. The...

Mar 13, 2017 - Bangkok

Our city tour was not scheduled until lunchtime, so we had breakfast and then went out for a wander. It was very hot, so we did not go that far. Wandered through the park, and saw a Tai Chi class in the park. We headed back to the hotel to get changed into full length clothes for our visits to the temples etc. that afternoon. We met our guide in the lobby, only to find out that teh Royal palace was shut that day, so we re-arranged for Wednesday. Went back up to the room and changed back into shorts etc. and then headed out to the Hard Rock...

Mar 12, 2017 - Travel to Bangkok

We were picked up at 1015 for travel to Cairns Airport. We then had a 3 hour flight to Sydney to pick up our flight to Bangkok We had a 3 hour wait for our flight, and then a 9 hour flight. Watched a few movies etc. When we landed , it was along walk to the arrival terminal, so our luggage was there before we were! We then got our transport to the Banyan Tree Hotel, where we were given a suite for our stay. By this time, it was 2am local time, so off we went to bed.

Mar 10, 2017 - Final Soiree in Bangkok!

We arrived back in Bangkok nicely on time which is kind of surprising as every other form of transport to date (pretty much without exception) had run late since arriving in Asia. The train terminates at station on the opposite side of the river to the ‘normal’ / main station in Bangkok, and therefore the opposite side of the river to most of the city. I wandered up the road towards the river and the bus landing to jump on a boat downtown and across to the main area of China town where I had arranged to meet Anoushka, the girl I had...

Hundy Tour 2016-2017

Feb 15, 2017 - Bangkok #3

I always enjoy heading to Amanda’s / Bangkok as it is great place to truly recalibrate (as well as obviously catching up with her, which is always a lot of fun!). After a pretty decent sleep I woke and pretty much exploded my bag across her apartment in order to sort through everything, work out what (if anything) I could get rid of, get everything washed after the trek, work out what I could leave there to pick up when I pass through in March and just generally sort everything out. The issue with hostels is you never completely unpack so...

Jan 31, 2017 - One night in Bangkok

We are up early today as according to the boat it is 2-3 hour drive into Bangkok. Not sure how you can really say the ‘port’ is Bangkok when you are that far away. None the less it is a must see. We have hired a private van through the ship which turns out to be a giant rip-off. Charging double what we were told and more than double what we could have got privately!! Of course it is their typical scare tactic, if you if you don’t take a cruise tour or transfer the boat will not wait for you. Therefore you are on your own to get to next...

Southeast Asia 2017

Jan 25, 2017 - Three days apart!

Tuesday 24th January We are back together after a three day separation, as Sally went on the Tribal Villages trek and I stayed behind in Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, although a lot better, my back would have been very uncomfortable at the end of a four hour minibus trip to the trek starting point. I didn't want to risk disrupting the trip by not being able to walk, so I decided to stay behind. I had a pleasant three days enjoying Chiang Mai. I found two lovely parks, teeming with bird life, so didn't have chance to get bored. I also explored...

Jan 20, 2017 - Day in Ayutthaya

Friday 20th Jan Today we were in the old capital city of Ayutthaya, where there are remains of over 200 temples. We were taken to the three big ones in the morning and by lunchtime were fully "templed out". The day was very bright and at 34oC it was hot although thankfully not too humid. We had lunch together at a riverside restaurant then back to the hotel. We decided to go for a massage after the others had said how good it was, so it was a quick shower and a dash out to Tony's Place before the rest could get there. Now this was a novel...

Jan 19, 2017 - Bridge over the River Kwai

Another fascinating day today, which started with breakfast overlooking the River Kwai in the town of Kanchanaburi. This is the place where the famous "Bridge over the River Kwai" was built, and we went to see that first thing. This was followed by a trip to the war museum and cemetery, which although interesting I found it a bit overwhelming. These people who suffered and died were my parents generation, and it's probably only by good fortune that my and Sally's father were not there. The museum was only small but very respectfully done,...
